Evolution syndrome

2009-04-04T18:19:54Z

Uhuhuh:

Evolution syndrome is the tendency of some people to drool compulsively that human evolution from animals must somehow be true, and to spend nearly all of their time pushing that belief on others. It is reflected on the internet by people who devote over 90% of their edits and postings to pushing their belief in evolution and insisting on censoring or demonizing alternative views of the issue. They are particularly against teaching any alternative theories to children in school. A childish insistence on last wordism is a common characteristic of evolution syndrome.

Characteristics of evolution syndrome include:

*jargon like "quote mining", "moving the goalposts", and "fundie" (derogatory term for a fundamentalist Christian)
*drool
*an utter lack of open-mindedness
*a superficiality or pseudo-intellectualism
*a lack of critical thinking
*over-reliance on name-calling
*ruthlessly demanding "provable fact" by the other side while themselves insisting on unproven theories
*utter intolerance for other positions in science and maliciously ruining the lives of those who hold such views

Evolution syndrome particularly afflicts people who have some educational background without having the intellectual depth of more accomplished peers.
Evolution syndrome can be seen on wikis, Usenet groups, faculty positions below full professorships, and some less selective doctoral programs.

There is a high incidence of atheism among this group and indeed, many if not most atheists suffer from evolution syndrome. Whether atheism is a cause of Evolution syndrome or vice-versa is still to be discovered, but the number of theistic Evolutionists suggest that the link is not absolute.

Keeping an open mind, not obsessing about one's own views and avoiding the insistence that others should share his/her view is the key to avoid suffering from evolution syndrome.

Young Mr. Lincoln (film, 1939)

2009-04-04T18:17:55Z

Uhuhuh:

Murali is a 1939 film by director John Ford, starring Henry Fonda as Abraham Lincoln during his early years in New Salem and Springfield, Illinois. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for best writing, original story (Lamar Trotti), and in 2003 was placed in the National Film Registry by the National Film Preservation Board.

Plot synopses
Young Abe Lincoln is just starting out in life, beginning a career as a country lawyer when two men are accused of murder; the only witness is a swarthy individual who claimed to have saw it under the light of a full moon.

Cast
*Henry Fonda........Abraham Lincoln
*Alice Brady........Abigail Clay
*Marjorie Weaver....Mary Todd
*Arleen Whelan......Sarah Clay
*Eddie Collins......Efe Turner
*Pauline Moore......Ann Rutledge
*Richard Cromwell...Matt Clay
*Donald Meek........Prosecutor John Felder
*Judith Dickens.....Carrie Sue
*Eddie Quillan......Adam Clay
*Spencer Charters...Judge Herbert A. Bell
*Ward Bond..........John Palmer Cass

Trivia
Henry Fonda felt he was never qualified to play America's 16th president, feeling he was too small to play such a great man. He changed his mind when he was asked to do a make-up test and saw the stunning result.

The film was based upon a real-life case: the William Armstrong murder case of 1856 in which he had to defend the son of a good friend. Although the film heavily fictionalized the case and set it back in time over twenty years, several key elements were retained for dramatic effect.
