California, known as the Golden State, is a state on the west coast of the United States. It is the largest state in population and the third largest state in area. Its governor is Arnold Schwarzenegger.

History
California's first European contact came in the 16th century AD. Spanish explorer and conquistador Hernando Cortez explored Alta California (upper California) extensively during this time period. Several years after this, Juan Rodrigeuz Cabrillo explored the area in his search for a passage to Asia. The Catholic church established a strong presence in the area over the next 200 years by establishing a number of missions in the area.

Miscellaneous facts
*The capital of California is Sacramento. However, the largest cities in population are, respectively, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Jose.

*Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics in 1930 and 1984.

*The California Redwood was named the official state tree in 1937.

*California's San Bernardino County is the largest county by area in the United States.

Politics
California's governor is the liberal Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, as was once Ronald Reagan, who later became President of the United States. Today, however, California is thought of as one of the most liberal states in Americafact, and is considered to be a blue state. Richard Nixon is, however, the only President to have been born in California.

Spectator Sports
California has more professional sports teams than any other state. Its NBA franchises include the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors, and Sacramento Kings. Its NHL franchises include the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks. In the NFL, the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and San Diego Chargers call California home. California Major League Baseball franchises are the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, and San Francisco Giants. In college sports, UCLA and USC have recently had great success, in basketball and football respectively.

Education
The state of California has three tiers of higher education: the California community colleges, the California State University (CSU) system, and the University of California (UC) system.

Fidel Valdez Ramos (born 1928) served as the 12th President of the Philippines until 1998, following the presidency of Corazon Aquino. He had previously served as the head of the Philippine Constabulary during the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos, and has been criticized for imposing martial law as ordered by President Marcos. But during the 1986 People Power Revolution against Marcos, Ramos switched sides and helped civilian protests that forced Marcos into exile. During his presidency, the Philippines' economy grew.

Someguy421: A more acurrate number of Islands...

The Philippines is a nation comprised of 7,107 islands in the South China Sea, north of Indonesia, east of Vietnam and south of Taiwan. The main geographic divisions are the island of Luzon in the north, Mindanao in the south, and the numerous smaller islands of the Visayas in the center.

The Philippines was subject to Spanish colonial rule from 1865 to 1898, when Spain was defeated by the U.S. in the Spanish-American War. After an insurgency was put down the United States administered the islands until they were conquered by Imperial Japan in 1942. In October 1944 America invaded the island of Leyte, which precipitated the largest naval battle in history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The result was the virtual annihilation of the Japanese Navy. After the islands were retaken from the Japanese, America granted independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946.

Governed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, now in her second six-year term, the population of over 85 million Filipinos have a per capital income of aproximately $1,200. Chronic political corruption has prevented the nation from breaking out as an economic "Asian Tiger" like neighboring Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea.
