==Cheese History==

[[France]] is especially renowned as a cheese producer, and their president [[Charles de Gaulle]] famously said : "How can a country with 300 different kinds of cheese agree on anything?". However, many French cheeses are made from unpasteurised milk and their transport across international borders is therefore forbidden for health reasons. Certain French cheeses (such as Epoisses) are so smelly that their carriage even on French [[public transport]] is also banned.{{fact}}

It is most likely that the invention of cheesemaking was a way of preserving excess milk for leaner times.

==Varieties==

There are literally thousands of varieties of cheese made in the world today. The best selection with more than thousand varieties is offered in the Kaufhaus des Westen, Berlin, Germany [http://www.kadewe-berlin.de/kaese_engl.php]. Some well known varieties are:

===Hard cheeses===
*Cheddar (A hard red or white cheese, originally from the [[England|English]] West country, but also now made worldwide in countries including [[Ireland]], [[Canada]], [[New Zealand]], and [[Scotland]])
*Parmesan ([[Italy]]|Italian very hard cheese.)
*Romano (Another Italian hard cheese)
*Gouda ([[Netherlands|Dutch]] cheese, with a yellow wax rind.)
*Monterey Jack ([[America]]n.)
*Mozzarella (A very soft hard cheese from Italy, traditionally made with buffalo's milk.)
*Emmenthal (A [[Switzerland|Swiss]] cheese, characterised by large holes.)

===Blue cheeses===
*Blue stilton (English crumbly blue cheese, a non-blue variety also exists.)
*Roquefort (The [[France|French]] king of blue cheeses, made from sheep's milk in a cave.)

===Soft cheeses===
*Feta (Soft and crumbly [[Greece|Greek]] goat's milk cheese)
*Brie (a French soft cheese, not particularly smelly.)
*Camembert (a French soft cheese, fairly smelly.)
*Munster (a French soft cheese, dangerously smelly.)
*Cottage cheese (a very runny soft curd cheese).

===Synthetic cheeses===
*American (a very mild [[ersatz]] cheddar, processed for a smooth texture, and often delivered by unusual methods, such as in cans, as strings, or as a spray.

==Non-cheese cheeses==

Head cheese, known as brawn in the UK and by other names in other parts of the world, is made from meat taken from the head of an animal - pigs, calves and cows are used - that might otherwise remain uneaten for aesthetic reasons. It sometimes includes meat from other normally unappetising areas such as the feet or organs. The meat is chopped or shredded and set in [[gelatine]]. It is usually eaten cold or at room temperature as a luncheon meat. In the southern states of the US this is sometimes also known as sousemeat and pickled in vinegar.

[[Lemon]] cheese is another name for lemon curd in the UK. Fruit cheeses are sometimes made with other citrus fruit.

==Cheese in Culture==

In [[England]], the traditional sport of [[cheese-rolling]] remains locally popular. [http://www.cheese-rolling.co.uk/]

[[James McIntyre]], a [[Canadian]] poet, was fond of writing [[poems]] and [[ode]]s to cheese. This is not because he thought the subject was funny, or ironic. Rather, McIntyre saw cheese production in [[Canada]] as a [[symbol]] of the strong growth in the Canadian [[economy]]. Many people today find his works quite humorous, but McIntyre's "[[Ode on the Mammoth Cheese]]" is considered by most poetry [[scholars]] not only his best work, but his ultimate achievement.

The original family name of comedian [[John Cleese]] was Cheese, but was changed to Cleese by his father. Cleese is famous, of course, for playing the frustrated customer in the Cheese Shop sketch on the ''[[Monty Python's Flying Circus]]'' television show.

Cheese is considered by some as a palliative for various internal diseases.
Azerbaijan is located in Southwestern Asia. It borders the [[Caspian Sea]], between [[Iran]] and [[Russia]], with a small part of it extending into [[Europe]] to the north of the Caucasus mountain range. As of July 2006, the population was at 7,961,619. The majority of Azerbaijanis follow [[Islam]]. Officially, Muslims make up 93.4% of the population, [[Russian Orthodox]] 2.5%, [[Armenian Orthodox]] 2.3%, and others 1.8%. Over 90% of the people are ethnic Azerbaijanis.<ref>https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/aj.html</ref> The official language is Turkic.

==History==
Azerbaijan is an ancient country with history dating back to the second century BC. The [[Arabs]] converted the Azerbaijanis to Islam at the sword,as was their custom, in the early eighth century. Over the next few centuries, the country saw many different rulers and frequent Mongol invasions.<ref>http://www.mfa.gov.az/eng/azer/history.shtml</ref> In the 18th century, Azerbaijan fell under Russian control and remained conquered until 1918-1920, when it had a brief period of independence. In 1920, the Soviets invaded and controlled the country until the state became independent once again at the USSR's collapse in 1991.<ref>http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/aztoc.html</ref>
Azerbaijan is an ancient nation rich with culture. Some of the works of art discovered are over 4000 years old. Azerbaijanis have been noted for their carpet making ever since the first century BC. Folk music and dances are very important to the people and are still performed today. Literature flourished in the middle ages.<ref>http://www.azerbaijan.az/_Culture/_GeneralInfo/_generalInfo_e.html</ref>
The current president of Azerbaijan is [[Ilham Aliyev]]. He is the son of the former Soviet leader [[Heydar Aliyev]]. Both the current and former presidents have bad human rights records and corruption. The 2005 election was widely criticized in the West. The media is mostly under state control, and dissenting journalists are frequently intimidated or killed.<ref>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/country_profiles/1235976.stm</ref>

'''Charles de Gaulle''' was the leader of the [[Free French]] forces during [[World War II]]. His relations with Roosevelt were notoriously strained. After France was liberated, he established a temporary government.

In 1958, France faced a major crisis due to the war in [[Algeria]] and de Gaulle was called back to solve the situation. He was nominated Prime Minister, had a new constitution drafted and approved by referendum and finally became the 18th president of the French republic. He was in office from 1959 until 1969. In 1969, feeling he did not have popular support anymore, de Gaulle organized a referendum, ostensibly about minor institutional reforms. When the voters rejected the reforms he advocated, de Gaulle voluntarily stepped down from office.

De Gaulle was born on November 22, 1890 and died on November 9,1970 at age 79.

De Gaulle once said, "Faced with crisis, the man of character falls back on himself. He imposes his own stamp of action, takes responsibility for it, makes it his own." [http://www.quotatio.com/g/gaulle-charles-de-quotes.html]
==Biography==

Stern received his Bachelor's degree in 1976 from Boston University, where he had worked as a volunteer at the college radio station.

After graduation, he worked as a disc jockey for WRNW in Westchester County, New York playing rock music. He discovered a talent for Lenny Bruce-type comedy, and developed a wide-ranging confrontational style. He migrated to FM radio stations in Detroit, Michigan and Washington, D.C., and returned to New York in 1982 to work at NBC's flagship AM radio station WNBC-AM. Also working at NBC was David Letterman, who became a fan of Stern's radio show. Stern's guest appearance on Late Night with David Letterman on June 19, 1984, launched Stern into the national spotlight and gave his radio show unprecedented exposure. Stern has appeared on Letterman's show many times thereafter.

Stern and his crew were fired from NBC in 1985 in response to a particularly outrageous sketch — "Bestiality Dial-A-Date" — and returned to the FM band by joining local rival station WXRK, premiering on November 18, 1985 and returning permanently to morning drive in February 1986. Stern's show was syndicated nationwide in the 1990s by Infinity Broadcasting.

Although both his parents are Jewish, Stern claims on his show to be "a half-Jew". His paternal grandparents, Froim and Anna (Gallar) Stern, and maternal grandparents, Sol and Esther (Reich) Schiffman, were Jews from Austria-Hungary who emigrated to America at about the same time.

On June 4, 1978, Stern married his college girlfriend, Alison Berns, at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline, Massachusetts; they have three daughters. In October of 1999, Stern announced that Alison had left him. Alison remarried in 2001 to David Lobosco. Since early 2000 Stern has been dating model Beth Ostrosky, who is 19 years younger than him. Ostrosky has appeared in the men's magazine ''FHM'' several times, and in early June of 2005, the editor-at-large of the magazine, Jake Bronstein, was fired after he commented that Ostrosky is only famous because she dates Stern. Many sources have said that Stern pressured FHM to fire him.

In one typical example of his radio show, he persuaded a female caller to have phone sex with him on the air. He made deep buzzing noises into his microphone, and had her sit on a speaker with the volume turned up until she reached an on-the-air orgasm. Another notable episode was on WWDC-FM (DC101 Radio) in Washington D.C. in which Stern called Air Florida Airlines and asked what the fare was for a one-way ticket from Washington National Airport to the 14th Street Bridge (on the Potomac River less than 1 mile from the airport). He was making fund of the crash of Air Florida Flight 90 one day earlier, on January 13, 1982, which had killed 78 persons (both onboard the airplane and in vehicles stopped in traffic on the bridge). That June 29, Stern was fired from DC-101 radio after being suspended for criticizing his station management and two other radio stations.

Stern refers to himself as the "King Of All Media," a parody of Michael Jackson's claiming of the title "King of Pop." Stern believes he represents the future of America, where public moral standards will continue to loosen. His show is frequently the subject of complaints by millions listeners who find his deliveries offensive - something he deliberately encourages.

In March of 1995, one day before the funeral of slain Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, Stern played the sounds of gunshots in the background over some of her music. He also made several racist comments, such as "Alvin and the Chipmunks have more soul", and "Spanish people have the worst taste in music...they have no depth." After pressure from his radio station, Stern gave an on-air apology a week later in Spanish.

In 1997, Stern's autobiographical book, Private Parts, was adapted to film. The movie did moderately well at box offices and in video release, garnering a total of over $60 million. However, this take was far below expectations. He had also announced plans for a film provisionally titled ''The Adventures of Fartman'' based on a character created for his appearance at the 1992 MTV Video/Music Awards. As of 2007, this project has not even begun pre-production.

His April 21, 1999 show drew angry criticism and official "censure" from the Colorado State Legislature for his comment regarding the motives of the two male students who murdered 12 classmates and one teacher in the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado:

:"There were some really good-looking girls running out with their hands over their heads. Did those kids try to have sex with any of the good-looking girls? They didn't even do that? At least if you're going to kill yourself and kill all the kids, why wouldn't you have some sex? If I was going to kill some people, I'd take them out with sex."

This incident prompting a Denver radio station to suspend his show.

Howard Stern divorced his wife Allison in 2000 and February of 2007 became engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Beth Ostrosky, who is 19 years younger than him.

On February 25, 2004, Clear Channel Communications "indefinitely suspended" him from six markets because of indecency involving sexual and racist dialogue during his show. The show in question featured Rick Salomon, whose claims to fame include a publicly released home video showing him having sex with heiress Paris Hilton. During this broadcast Stern held a sexually-provocative and racially insensitive interview with Saloman, asking him graphic questions about anal sex and making light of a caller's use of the word "nigger". Clear Channel president John Hogan said, "Clear Channel drew a line in the sand today with regard to protecting our listeners from indecent content, and Howard Stern's show blew right through it...it was vulgar, offensive and insulting, not just to women and African-Americans but to anyone with a sense of common decency." Because some of Clear Channel's employees have donated money to the Republican Party, Stern claims the company was trying to penalize him for his harsh verbal attacks on President Bush.

On October 6, 2004, Stern announced on his show that he has signed a five year, $500 million deal with the satellite radio service Sirius. This move has been met with much controversy, as Stern has been talking about his move to Sirius on his show, even telling listeners how to purchase Sirius equipment and subscriptions. Stern even held a rally in New York where he gave out coupons for free or discounted Sirius equipment.

Stern's last show on conventional AM/FM "terrestrial" radio was on December 16, 2005. The ''Howard Stern Show'' debuted on Sirius, on January 9, 2006.

==Political and Religious views==

Although raised [[Jewish]], Stern is a militant [[atheist]]. Stern and his staff often mock [[religion]] and the show is widely considered inappropriate for children, due to inappropriate content (both related to religion and not).

Stern's shows have also featured political commentary. Although Stern used to be a self-proclaimed [[Libertarianism|libertarian]], in recent years he has abandoned that philosophy and embraced [[liberal]] positions that are in direct opposition to libertarian ideology, such as government regulation of corporations, radical environmentalism, gun control, income redistribution through higher taxation, and government funding for [[abortion]] and embryonic stem cell research. He also considers [[Ralph Nader]] to be one of his heroes. He is also a supporter of [[Michael Moore]] and was very vocal in his endorsement of Moore's film "''Fahrenheit 9/11''" which was released in June of 2004. Moore was even a guest on Stern's show the week of the film's release and called into the show a day before the 2004 presidential election. Stern is now considered by many [[conservatives]], libertarians, and moderates/centrists to represent the far-left of the political spectrum.

During a week vacation in February of 2004 he read [[Al Franken]]'s anti-Bush book, ''Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right''. He told his listeners "If you read this book, you will never vote for [[George W. Bush]]. I think this guy is a religious fanatic and a Jesus freak, and he is just hell-bent on getting some sort of bizzaro agenda through -- like a country-club agenda -- so that his father will finally be proud of him ... I don't know much about Kerry, but I think I'm one of those 'Anybody but Bush' guys now. I don't think G.W. is going to win. What do you think about that?"

On July 25, 2006 Stern launched into a tirade against [[Connecticut]] Senator [[Joe Lieberman]]. He attacked Lieberman's past support of indecency laws and his current support of the [[War on Terror]] [http://www.crooksandliars.com/posts/2006/07/26/9212/]. In February of 2007, Stern announced on his radio show that he will most likely vote for [[Rudy Giuliani]] [http://howardstern.com/rundown.hs?d=1170738000#8882] for president in 2008.

==Trivia==
* Stern share the same birthday as Rush Limbaugh (January 12).
* Stern is 6 ft 5 in (196 cm) in height.
In addition to its national defense role as one of the five U.S. armed services, the Coast Guard is charged with a broad scope of regulatory, law-enforcement, humanitarian and emergency-response duties. The Service operates in a complex and dangerous maritime environment characterized by rapidly changing security threats at home and abroad.

The Coast Guard performs a myriad tasks and operations in direct support of numerous critical maritime security and safety roles that involve it enforcing maritime law, protecting natural resources, mobilizing maritime national defense and securing the homeland on the sea. The Service's missions include: maritime search and rescue, International Ice Patrol operations, polar and domestic waterway icebreaking, bridge administration, aids to navigation, recreational boating safety, vessel traffic management, at-sea enforcement of living marine resource laws and treaty obligations, at-sea drug and illegal migrant interdiction, and port security and safety.

The United States confronts numerous maritime challenges that pose or will pose increasingly significant demands on the Coast Guard and threats to U.S. National Security. The Coast Guard works on illegal migration and contraband smuggling, resource protection threats involving both living and inorganic marine resources, asymmetric threats from weapons of mass destruction and terrorist activities, continued U.S. support of [[United Nations]]-sponsored sanctions and security operations, and security, defense, and resource protection implications of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The Service is responsible for the safety and security of America's inland waterways, ports, and harbors; more than 95,000 miles of U.S. coastlines; U.S. territorial seas; 3.4 million square miles of ocean defining our Exclusive Economic Zones; and international waters or other maritime regions of importance to the United States. The Coast Guard's greatest asset is its highly trained and motivated workforce, serving in active-duty, reserve, auxiliary, and civilian capacities. To carry out its diverse and demanding tasks, the Coast Guard operates a fleet of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, small boats, buoy tenders, ice breakers, and a fleet of "deepwater" cutters capable of protecting America's maritime security interests wherever they might be at risk or the [[President of the United States]] so requires.
A hammer is one example of a "simple" hand tool that is, nevertheless, not an example of a "[[simple machine]]." Although it appears at first glance to be an example of a third-class lever, a hammer will not work without a weighted head. The hammerhead is, in fact, an energy storage device. Kinetic energy is stored in the head over the relatively long time during which the hammer is being swung, then released during the much shorter time when the head strikes the nail. The force applied by the hammer is far higher than the force that is applied if the head simply rests on the nail, and cannot be calculated from lever principles. The hammer is thus one of many relatively simple hand tools that store and release energy through the use of inertia or elasticity.

Northern Ireland was created by the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1922, which formally concluded the Irish War of Independence. It was governed from [[Stormont]] Castle in [[Belfast]], and both Catholics and Protestants debated their membership. During this time, MP's would travel to and from the Houses of Parliament where they served on Her Majesty's Government. However, a minority on both sides of the Irish border refused to accept the partition of Ireland and continued to fight the British, largely with terrorist activities.

The most important group in this regard has been the [[terrorist]] [[Irish Republican Army]], commonly known as the [[IRA]]. The IRA was originally formed to fight the British during the War of Independence. Many IRA members refused to accept the Anglo-Irish treaty's partition of the island into two separate countries, leading to the bloody Irish Civil War of 1922-23, in which pro-treaty forces were victorious. However, the anti-treaty forces continued to refer to themselves as the IRA after the civil war concluded, and to consider themselves the legitimate government of Ireland{{fact}}.

The government of Northern Ireland has been widely criticized for anti-Catholic policies, particularly during its first 40 years{{fact}}. The country's first prime minister, [[James Craig]], once famously described it as "a Protestant parliament and a Protestant state."<ref>Bardon, J. (1992). A History of Ulster. The Blackstaff Press, Belfast, pp. 539.</ref>

== Civil Rights Movement ==

During the late 1960s, partially inspired by the civil rights movement in the [[United States]], Northern Ireland Catholics began to protest against perceived discrimination by the government. Protests were initially led by the [[Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association]], or NICRA, which was founded in January 1967. NICRA's demands included repeal of the Special Powers Act, the end of the paramilitary B Specials police force, an end to the gerrymandering in local elections, and an end to discrimination in terms of government housing and government employment.

Protests typically took the form of marches or other demonstrations. One of the most important protests took place on January 1, 1969, when a group from the student People's Democracy organization organized a march from Belfast to Derry, intended to imitate [[Martin Luther King, Jr.]]'s marches from Selma to Montgomery. The march was repeatedly attacked by unionists (those wishing for Northern Ireland to remain in the United Kingdom), including off-duty policemen. The most intense violence occurred at Burntollet Bridge, where the marchers were attacked by 200 unionists while police did little to intervene.

== The Troubles ==
"The Troubles" refers to a 30-year period of terrorism and civil unrest. The Troubles are generally considered to have begun with civil rights movement and the violent unionist response. Northern Ireland prime minister Terrence O'Neill at first responded favorably to the demands of the protestors, but this attitude was decried by other unionists, including [[Ian Paisley]]. Many unionists believed that NICRA was controlled by the [[IRA]]. Following the violence at Burntollet Bridge, nationalists in the city of Derry began to erect barricades to protect themselves. This led to the Battle of the Bogside between nationalists and police prior to a unionist march that was scheduled to pass the nationalist Bogside area of the city. The Battle of the Bogside lasted from August 12 to 14, 1969 before British troops were called to resolve the situation. In the meantime, fierce rioting broke out in other parts of the country, including Belfast, Newry, and Strabane. In total, 7 people were killed and 750 injured during the unrest in August 1969, and 1,500 Catholic families and 500 Protestant families were forced from their homes. The government then requested the presence of British troops throughout the country to keep order.

The violence of the Troubles peaked during the early 1970s, spurred by an influx of recruits to various terrorist organizations, including the nationalist [[IRA]] and the unionist [[Ulster Defense Association]] and [[Ulster Volunteer Force]]. A number of events combined to solidity the divide between the nationalist and unionist communities. For nationalists, these included the Falls Curfew of July 1970, in which British troops cordoned off nationalist neighborhoods in Belfast, not allowing residents in or out of the area; 4 nationalists were killed in fighting between British troops and the IRA. The introduction of internment without trial in August 1971 was viewed by nationalists as discriminatory, as 348 of the first 350 people interned were nationalists. Of nearly 2,000 people interned over the next four years, 94.6% were nationalists. For unionists, [[IRA]] actions similarly hardened their positions. For example, the IRA carried out 1,300 bombings by the end of 1972, largely against commercial targets, considerably disrupting everyday life and often resulting in the deaths of uninvolved civilians. The worst example during this period is known as Bloody Friday, when the IRA set off 22 bombs on July 21, 1972, causing 9 deaths and 130 injuries. The IRA provided warnings to security forces via the media, but given the number of bombs planted did not give sufficient time to allow the security forces to evacuate the areas. In some cases, ambiguous warnings led to people being led toward, rather than away from, bombs about to be detonated.

In 1972 the UK government, deeming the Northern Ireland government unable to stabilize the situation, suspended the Northern Ireland parliament and instituted direct rule from London. While direct rule was intended as a temporary measure, it continued throughout the course of the Troubles.
Although all US Navy submarines are capable of launching tomahawk missile's, the SSGN's are given there designation of SSGN because they are capable of carrying 154+ tomahawk cruise missiles, a massive loadout compared to that of a standard SSN.
Currently, the United States Navy maintains submarines bases in
Groton, CT
Norfolk, VA
Kingsbay, GA
Banger, WA
San Diego, CA
Pearl Harbor, HA
Guam, Guam
and at least for the meantime there is a submarine tender at the NSA(naval support activity) located in LaMadalena, Italy. An island off the coast of Sardinia.

Irony is an implied discrepancy between what is said or done and what is meant or expected to happen.

The term is is commonly used in U.S. English to refer to a type of [[rhetoric]] whereby a statement or assertion is made with the intention to put across the opposite meaning. E.g. "Oh I ''really'' like your coat." In British English this is more commonly referred to as [[sarcasm]]. Whether a particular statement is construed as irony or sarcasm can often be a matter of opinion. The Sarcasm Society <ref> http://www.sarcasmsociety.com/howtorecognizeirony/</ref> offers the following distinction:
:'''Sarcasm ''' can be illustrated by the speaker saying, "I appreciate your help.", when no help was provided to the speaker. However, when the speaker says speaker says, "It was a bit cold.", after losing a leg due to frost bite, this understatement can be construed as '''irony'''.

It is received wisdom in Britain that irony is not well understood in the U.S. <ref> http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3433375.stm </ref> <ref> http://www.humor-and-laughing.com/50436.php</ref>. However the re-election of George W.Bush has convinced many in the U.K. that this is simply not true. <ref> Quote: Many sources for this, but see, for example: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/political_wrap/jan-june05/sb_5-6.html. "The irony is George Bush won reelection in November in spite of his economic record. Tony Blair probably won reelection because of his economic record. "</ref>

It might be useful to distinguish three kinds of irony <ref> definition adapted from: http://www.tnellen.com/cybereng/lit_terms/irony.html</ref>:

'''Verbal irony''', when an author says one thing and means something else. This is sometimes called 'Socratic Irony' and is used by teachers pretending to be foolish or ignorant, to expose the ignorance of another.

'''Dramatic irony''', when an audience perceives something that a character in literature does not know. The effect can be tragic, such as in '[[Romeo & Juliet]]', where the fate of the characters is sealed at the start of the play, or comedic, such as in '[[Twelfth Night]]' where Malvolio is duped by Maria and Toby. Such irony can work in reverse, where some characters in drama understand their actions, but the audience is duped into thinking something else. Such is the situation in [[The Village]], or [[The Sixth Sense]].

'''Irony of situation''', a discrepency between the expected result and actual results. An example of this definition of ''irony'' might be a boxer betting his life savings on a fight he expects to lose, and then accidentally winning the fight.

The current situation is further clouded by the fact that literature, cinema, fashion and behaviour can now be described as [[post irony|post ironic]]. This term is often used when a statement is made which is insulting, and which potentially could be true, is not meant as an insult. An example of this is being asked "Does my bum look big in this?", and replying: "It's looks bigger than an elephant's". This taken on face value could be seen to be insulting. However the implication here is that this latter statement is ironic, and no insult is intended. The problem with post irony is that it is often difficult to distinguish between fashion gaffs, insults and poor literature and attempts to be 'cool', 'subtle', and 'sophisticated'. <ref> For further clarification on this see the urban dictionary definition at http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=post-ironic </ref>

The following statement which appeared in the original version of the article can also be construed as irony:

"Something made of, or largely composed of, [[iron]] can be described as ''irony''.
<nowiki>[[Category:Chemistry]]</nowiki>"
