Sandro D.

1.	Word War II was fought between the Axis powers (Japan, Germany, and Italy) and the Allied forces (Great Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, US, and Russia). In Asia in 1931, World War II began its Asian phase when Japan invaded Manchuria. In 1939, Germany started to attack Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia. The US did not fight in World War II until 1941 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. World War II was fought on all the continents except North America and Antarctica. The leader of Germany was Adolf Hitler, Italy was led by Mussolini and Japan was led by its Emperor Hirohito. World War II started due to one man’s thirst for power and his name was Adolf Hitler. The leaders of Italy and Japan also sought world wide power and chose to ally themselves with Hitler. Hitler was brazen and methodical. On September 29, 1938, he dominated the meeting at Munich. He was able to invalidate the Treaty of Versailles, rearm Germany militarily and he gained Austria through his bullying stance. What a history lesson to be learned for all nations. Bullies need to be stopped not pacified. Ostrich head in the sand is not the correct strategy with a bully.

2. (Substituted H4) History does repeat itself! For instance, the Korean War was fought because North Korea wanted to make South Korea a communist nation. Meanwhile South Korea wanted to be a free enterprise nation unlike the communist Nation of North Korea. This is similar to the Civil War in the United States where the Southern states wanted to leave the Northern states but the Northern wanted to contain the South so that the United States would continue to be one whole nation. A civil war broke out that put the United States at risk from invasion and even domination from foreign nations. In the end the Civil War was won by the North. The difference is that North Korea and South Korea had tons of foreign nations giving arms, money and troops to help the war effort. Due to advanced technology of freedom of travel, the interference of foreign nations was more accessible in the 20th century than in the 19th century. Even though France and Great Britain were jockeying for position in the American civil war, their direct ability to affect would have been limited by the technology of that century.

3. I think that Hitler and his supporters killed so many people because the Germans believed they were the superior race. Just like the slave trade in Africa where white men believed that they were superior to men of color. By killing these people, they gained all their worldly possessions: jewelry, money, real estate, control of commerce, etc. This may seem gruesome but it is more cost effective to kill prisoners and than to keep feeding, clothing and to provide housing & guards for prisoners. The Hitler’s way was one of great efficiency. There was no conscience.

4. The effect of communism spreading to China was that Mao Zedong became the leader of China and renamed it the Republic of China. He made laws stating that no one could own land or possessions. Thus no one had the motivation to work since there was no incentive. Since no one would work, a famine came and 30 million Chinese people died.

5.	(Substituted for H6) I think that General MacArthur was right to cut off the North Korean supplies lines but was wrong in thinking; he could defeat China’s army. He should have deferred to President Truman’s efforts for a diplomatic resolution. The Chinese army was thousands strong and geographically easy to rearm troops.

6.	One of the technological advances that helped the Allied forces win World War II was the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan. Another advantage was the superior skill of General Patton to command the Third Army. The Allied forces were also aided by Marian Rejewsi who used advanced mathematics to decipher the Enigma Codes; he helped by creating “doubles” of the Enigma that could easily find the keys necessary for decryption. This advantage eliminated the element of surprise.

7.	I think that if the United States entered World War II earlier, we would have avoided the Attack on Pearl Harbor. I also think that if Roosevelt did decode a message from Japan about its plans to attack the United States, he should have told the people and taken action before it was too late. Similar situation occurred in World War I, where Great Britain showed United States a message about what the Central Powers was planning to do to conquer the United States.

Sandro D

1. The Great War is now called World War I. World War I was fought between the Central Powers ( Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) and the Allies of Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States which joined the fight in 1917. World War I was called the Great War since this was the first global war in history.
The Great War lasted from 1914-1918. It was the first war where, airplanes, machine guns, poisonous gas, large artillery, and armored tanks were used.

2. World War I was never really won by any one nation or anyone. As the Americans and the Allies advanced toward Germany, the Ottoman Turks and Bulgarians surrendered. There was a revolution in Austria- Hungary that overthrew its government, and Germany would not recognize the new government. Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated his throne in Germany on November 1918, and the Germans formed a new republic. Members of the German republic signed an armistice on November 11, 1918. The Great War was over. The terms of peace remained unresolved and set the stage for World War II. All the countries had huge causalities. I would say that the United States and Japan were the nations that suffered the least amount of casualties since the war was not fought on their soil and they came out the strongest economically since this war was not fought on their soil so buildings, factories and cities would not have been destroyed.

3. Substituted for H1. I prefer John Smith’s motto “He that does not work shall not eat.” over Leon Trotsky’s motto “Those who do not obey do not eat.” I prefer Smith’s motto more because you should work to get your food. You should not make someone else get the food for you. This is not inferring that a baby or young kid should have to work to get their food. I am talking more along the lines of a young adult or adult. Now Trotsky’s motto is kind of loose in the words for he does not state what you must obey while Smith’s motto is you must work or you do not eat. Now to me that is pretty clear on what you have to do. This motto by Captain John Smith was used to motivate the non working class of colonists who came to America. These colonists were not accustomed to hard labor and need a swift kick to realize there was no class privilege here in the New World. The New World would be fruitful to those who worked the land.

4. The Russian communist revolution started in Russia in November of 1917 and lasted till 1920. The revolution occurred because the Russian people wanted out of World War I and the leader of Russia would not agree. The revolution was started by Lenin Trotsky who marched his army to the winter palace in Petrograd and arrested all the leaders of the Russian Provisional government. Now there are other communist revolutions such as Chinese Revolution, Hungarian Revolution, German Revolution and many others that happened through out history.

5. The Big Bang Theory was proposed by a Belgian priest, Georges-Henri Lemaitre that believed the universe must have begun in an initial massive explosion like a creation. Lemaitre’s theory was ridiculed for years until Edwin Hubble discovered evidence to support Lemaitre’s theory. Today most physicists accept the Big Bang theory. My view on the Big Bang is that it did not happen that way but that God created the universe and everything in it. What God has created our finite human reasoning can not deduce nor should we waste our energy on it.

6. One European colony, India was the colony of Great Britain. The British did not grant independence to its colony of India immediately after WWI, as many Indians had hoped.
Great Britain had no intention of giving up this subcontinent of Asia. Hindus and Muslims sought independence and formed a peaceful demonstration at Amritsar, which was the capital of the Punjab region. Unfortunately a panicked British commander instructed his troops to fire on the Hindu and Muslim protesters, killing 400 which is now known as the Amritsar Massacre. Indians nationwide were outraged and demanded independence.
Mohandas Ghandi emerged as a spiritual leader who was able to win Indian independence peacefully. He urged peaceful civil disobedience against the British, asking the Indians to refuse to pay taxes and to refuse to attend British schools. He also called on Indians to stop trading with Britain, especially in respect to clothing. Eventually, these peaceful protests paid off and the British Parliament enacted the Government of India Act in 1935. This established self-rule at a local level and allowed some democratic elections. Muslims geared the majority Hindu rule and requested a separate state for Muslims. Thus, Pakistan was created for the Muslims and India remained predominantly Hindu. These two nations are not friendly with each other even though geographically they share common borders.

7. Yes, our economic problems today are similar to the Great Depression. There is high inflation, stock market fluctuates wildly and unemployment is at record highs. The price of food staples has increased dramatically. People who ordinarily would not use a food bank are drawing on those groceries to meet weekly family needs. The food banks are asking for continual support. The well can run dry soon since the middle class is being squeezed. During the Great Depression, the banks were not bailed out and many folded.
Nowadays, our government is bailing the bank giants out while the banks do not have mercy on the average family. This mirrors the parable that Jesus taught us where the master forgives the servant’s debt while the servant imprisons another man who owes him a debt. We know how that turned out. Will our government be up to this task?
During the Great Depression, unemployment was rampant where people abandoned dwellings and moved to a new geographic location hoping for a fresh start. This is happening here in Florida and in Nevada, where expansive and costly homes are being abandoned since the homeowner can no longer afford the upkeep. The pool are turning green from algae and local native animals come to live in those pools and become hazardous for the neighbors.

Some historians cite that the textile factories in India and the iron industry in China were the forerunners to the English Industrial Revolution. Yet India and China did not have an Industrial Revolution until the 1950’s.
2.	Substituted for H3 Nationalism is good because it allows people to come together to be one whole. If you have to go to war against another country you can fight as a whole country instead of a provinces. A country with nationalism would be better able to protect itself against invaders and catch criminals since the criminal could not flee to the next down since they would be looking for him there.
3.	I think that the Industrial Revolution was good in many ways and was also negative in some ways. Some positive things that the Industrial Revolution brought about was the growth of European countries in wealth and power and it increased the trade among countries. Some negative effects that were at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution were that people were working in harsh conditions and low wages this problem was later fixed by the Industrial Reformation by which quality of living was improved. So I would say that the beginning of the Industrial Revolution was negative for low income people but later in the Industrial Revolution after the Industrial Reformation it became better.

4.	An example of nationalism occurred in Italy in 1861. Italy’s first prominent nationalist was Giusseppe Mazzini who pushed for the unification of Italy and started the Brotherhood of Young Italy in 1831. However the rulers of Italy were not ready for this reform. Not until twenty years later did a former Brother of Young Italy named Giuseppe Garibaldi led a revolution in Southern Italy while King Victor and Count Cavour led a revolution in Northern Italy. Both Northern and Southern Italy succeeded in their revolt and in 1861 the people of Italy voted to unify the country. Venice and Rome were later added to the union in 1870. In this case nationalism was an improvement for Italy. This move allowed better trade among provinces, unified law codes and enforcement as well as sense of identity that was not tie to a town or province. This movement allowed a sense of unity and pride for one’s country.

5.	Substituted for H1. Utilitarianism is when government compares cost versus benefit to decide on how to maximize its assets, such as power, wealth, peace, land, disputes, etc. My view is that utilitarianism goes against the Bible because if the government thinks body piercing might improve something they might try it on some people. Yet the Bible tells us not to pierce are bodies like the pagans do. This type of government is against Christian mortality. The government might want us to worship other gods to see if it improves morale yet the Bible states “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God”. Exodus 34:14

6.	Substiuted for H2 My view on Imperialism is that it is sometimes good. Such as now when America is trying to control some of the Middle Eastern countries to bring order and stop the bombings I agree that what the Americans are doing is good. However when the Germanys tried to extinguish the Jews to unify their country by naming a common enemy. Picking on a group of people due to a different religion I do not agree with. For the German leadership wanted the Jews to be the scapegoats in order to execute its plan of world domination.

7.	Substituted for H4 Japan became an Imperialistic power that even threatened China. In 1549, Christian missionaries came to Japan and gave them European technology which later aided them during World War II. The firearms that the missionaries brought aided Japan in unifying their country. In 1637 the spread of Christianity caused the retaliation and the persecution of the Christians. Therefore Japan closed all of its ports but one (Nagasaki). In 1853 the American Commodore Matthew Perry sailed into Edo harbor. His trip was successful and caused the treaty of Kanagawa to be signed. The United States was also allowed to use two ports and start an embassy. Later other European nations gained access to Japan. In 1868, a new emperor rose to power, Mutsuhito, he industrialized Japan, strengthened Japan’s military power and centralized its government. By the 1900’s Japan was a leading world power that could compete militarily and economically with other countries. Japan defeated China first then invaded Korea in 1894. The Chinese retreated from Korea and then Japan invaded Manchuria in the Sino-Japanese War. In 1895, the peace treaty was signd that gave Japan the Pescadores Islands and Taiwan. Next, Japan took on Russia and defeated it in 1905. The Russian fleet was defeated and Japan received control of Chinese Eastern Railway’s southern portion. Japan became of one of most imperialistic nations while it had begun as a target of imperialism. Japanese aggression was unlimited especially in depressing the populations of Korea and China. Perhaps, in its initial hatred of another country’s imposition it became what it hated the most.

2. Martin Luther was a law student that later became a monk. One day Luther was caught up in a bad storm and he prayed to God that if he lived, he would become a monk. After Luther lived through the storm he joined a monastery. He wrote 95 Theses that protested against the indulgences the pope was offering and nailed them to a church. Luther was told to withdraw 41 of the 95 theses or be excommunicated Luther refused and was therefore excommunicated. Luther was put on trial by the German authorities but escaped before they read the verdict. He hid at the Wartburg Castle and there he translated the bible from Hebrew to German. Luther died in 1546 from an unknown illness that he had been battling for a couple of years.
3. The Baroque style used the revolutionary technique of dramatic, selective illumination of figures out of deep shadow. This technique is a hallmark of a Baroque painting. Baroque realistically presents models from the streets. After the Reformation, painters adopted the Baroque style as part of the Counter-Reformation by the Catholic Church to appeal spiritually to the audience and to make inroads into Protestant regions.
4. The development of the English language is divided into three periods: Old English, Middle English and Modern English. 5. The Tang Dynasty ruled China for nearly 300 years during A.D. 618 to 907. This time period is known as the golden age of art and pottery. China acquired Manchuria, Tibet, Korea, and Northern Vietnam. The Tang Dynasty became known as the Middle Kingdom for it drew its wealth from surrounding states. The most powerful ruler of the Tang Dynasty was Tang Taizong. He gained power by killing off the opposition but then ruled in a fair manner and kept the taxes low. The education was based on three requirements: learn the writings of Confucius, study the Chinese classics, and pass the civil service exam.
6. The Renaissance occurred in Europe as a cultural rebirth in the city of Florence, Italy. The northern city-states of Italy were a perfect location for the Renaissance to occur, as Italian culture was built off classical Greek and Roman civilization. Italy and Germany did not form nation-states like France and England, and without a centralized government the Italian city-states were conducive to cultural and intellectual renewal. The Italian cities had become important and wealthy locations by trading and selling during the Crusades. The Italian city of Florence was home to wealthy families, such as the prominent Medici family, who were willing to finance artists. Friendly competition among the different city-states brought out the best in people and created an environment in which creativity and personal drive thrived.

1. The time period for the Middle Ages is A.D. 500- 1500. The time period for the crusades occurred in is A.D.1096-1291, which is in the center of the Middle Age time period. The primary motivation of the Crusades was to make Jerusalem safe for Christian pilgrimages.

2. The Mongol Empire under Genghis Khans’ rule was able to conquer the largest contiguous region in World History during A.D. 1206-1227. Historians consider Genghis Khan to be a military genius. He was also known as Chinggis. He built a powerful and massive army based on meritocracy. This system allowed for promotion based on merit not friendship or seniority.

3. During the Middle Ages, the countries, Germany and Italy failed to establish nation-states due to internal conflict. Meanwhile, England and France were able to establish nation-states.

4.My favorite part about Gothic Architecture is the stain glass windows that they made in their cathedrals. Nowadays you never see that kind of hand made work since machines were invented. Besides letting light into a room, the stain glass windows were used to depict a Biblical scene or story to teach the people.

5. The kingdom of Zimbabwe was in the southeastern part of Africa and stretched to the Indian Ocean during A.D. 1200- 1500. The city of Zimbabwe was built on trade which was mainly gold. The kingdom of Zimbabwe spoke the language of Bantu and Zimbabwe means House of Stone. The people of the Zimbabwe kingdom lived on plateaus to avoid various diseases since the insects that carried them stayed near the water.

6.I do not have any preference for Scholasticism. It goes against what I believe that we should rely on Scripture. I pray before I read Scripture and ask for the Holy Spirit’s guidance to understand what I read. When men use logic to prove the existence of God, it is foolishness. For example, in the feeding of the five thousand, the disciples ask Jesus to release the crowd so that they can go to nearby towns to buy and then eat dinner. Jesus responded illogically. He told them to gather what food was available. Two fish and five loaves were gathered. Jesus blessed the food up to God, His Father and then told them to distribute it among the crowd. Quite illogical an action to take. After all had been fed, there were twelve baskets of leftovers. We have human understanding and we can never fully understand all that God has done for us and truly understand the redemption He has given us with Christ’s death and resurrection. To someone who does not know God, it is not the argument that God exists that will win that person over. It is the words, deeds and actions of believers as we led our Christian lives that may plant the seeds of faith in that person and make them thirst for more.

7.The biggest effect of the Crusades in the Middle Ages was that the Catholic Church gained more power and this led to the Reformation. The main thought of the Reformation that Christians learned was that we are saved by faith not good works. People avoid using the term Crusade today because it is considered politically incorrect. Opponents of Christianity describe the crusades as unjust violence caused by Christians. The religious idea was to make safe passage to Jerusalem for Christians turned into greed and ambition filled motivation for the Crusaders.
