1. My favorite period of time in American history was the Gilded Age. The economy of American grew in leaps and bounds, many great inventions came out of this period and many famous works of literature were produced.

2. First of all, the most obvious difference between President Ronald Reagan and President Bill Clinton was that Reagan was a Republican and Clinton was a Democrat. President Ronald Reagan held true to his very conservative views, President Bill Clinton had more liberal views, but when he realized that most Americans did not agree with him, he became more of a moderate. The second thing that comes to mind is that President Ronald Reagan had morals and did not have sex with an intern; President Bill Clinton did not have such great morals and had sex with an intern.

3. I would say the most important trend guiding American history would be the exodus from public and private schools towards homeschooling and other schools such as charter schools. I believe this trend is happening because people are sick and tired of their children being left behind because they struggle with certain subjects. Also, many parents are fed up with their children being taught very liberal views that they don’t feel are right for their children.

4. I think the most important threat to the future of America is terrorism. “9/11” was enough to convince me of this.

5. I definitely see a connection between culture and success for a nation. You can look at the late 1700’s when our forefathers wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, two of the greatest documents of all time. At that time, people were concerned about creating a country better than the ones in Europe. They did not want what they had left behind. They worked together to first gain independence from Great Britain and then to create a government that gave the power to the people.

6. One of the greatest achievements of Ronald Reagan was when he told Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall, separating Communist East Germany from West Germany. President Reagan is credited with ending communism in Eastern Europe and the USSR.
Another great accomplishment of Ronald Reagan is that he reduced the size of the government and returned more power to the states, forcing them to assume responsibility for their problems.

7. This map was made in 1550 by a German cartographer named Sebastian Munster. I think America’s achievements have most definitely exceeded the expectations of this cartographer and the other people of that time. I do not think anyone at that time would have predicted that America would become the greatest country in the world.

Nick DeJ History - Homework Twelve

1. The time frame of the “Cold War” war was 1949 to 1991. The main protagonists of this “war” were the United States and The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

2. The first war that caused over 50,000 American deaths that happened between 1945 and 1980 was
the Korean War. 54,000 American soldiers died in this war. The second war that caused over 50,000 American deaths that happened between 1945 and 1980 was the Vietnam War which had over 58,000 American Deaths. I do not believe we should have entered these wars. I believe in a combination of George Washington’s philosophy that we should not get involved with foreign affairs and Theodore Roosevelt’s philosophy that we, as a civilized nation, need to get involved when injustice is being done. However, nothing good came out of these two wars. These wars, which were supposed to be fought to stop communism from spreading, resulted in many deaths, no change to North and South Korea, and Vietnam becoming a communist country.

3. My favorite aspect of the Civil Rights Movement is how Congress, realizing that African Americans were not treated as equals to White Americans in this county, passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This Act outlawed discrimination based upon race, religion, color, or gender. No longer could employers deny an African American a job because of his color. People should be hired based on knowledge and ability, not their color.

4. One of the things Lyndon B. Johnson is known for is pushing through the “Great Society” programs. Many of these programs are the reason that our taxes are so high today. He pushed through Medicare, which established free medical care for everyone over age 65 and Medicaid, which established free medical care for the poor. He started the “Head Start” preschool program for the poor. While I do believe that programs like Medicare are needed, too many abuses occur.

5. What I liked best about the 80th Congress was that they the 22nd Amendment. This Amendment is important because it limited the President to two terms in office. It also provided that if the President dies in office and the Vice President takes over, if the Vice President takes over for more than two years of his predecessor’s term, he may be elected more than one more time.

6. I think the most important person between 1945 and 1980 was Earl Warren. He was the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court from 1953 through 1969. He is known for being extremely liberal. He is famous for always being in favor of criminals; he restricted the power of law enforcement. He is also famous for “separating Church and State”; he prohibited praying in public schools.

7. In the 1960s the name used to describe the people that were in charge of the Us Supreme Court Building was “The Warren Court”. This Supreme Court was an “activist court” that extended judicial powers. An example of its activism is when they stopped the prayer in public schools.

Nick DeJ American History Homework Eleven

1. I think it is very important to learn history because understanding situations that have occurred in the past will help me to make political decisions in the future. I also think that understanding how my country came to be is really important to understand where it is going. Lastly, understanding the reasoning behind decisions made in the past might also help me with day-to-day problems that I might encounter.

2. In the beginning of World War II, most people in the United States wanted to remain neutral. However, as the war in Europe escalated, the need for American involvement became clear. Britain, our ally, needed materials and supplies. I think we were right helping them. Once the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, we had no choice, but to go to war. I also think if we had known about the Holocaust before we did, we would have entered the war sooner.

3. I think that the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, signed into law by President Ronald Regan, was a good idea, for the most part. This law made it a crime for an employer to hire an illegal immigrant. It also required that employers have their employees complete a form, called the I-9 form, which provided documentation that the employees were legally eligible to work in the United States. It imposed financial penalties for the companies who were employing illegal aliens. This law was passed in hopes of reducing illegal immigration.

While I believe that this law was a great idea, I disagree with a part of it. This Act granted amnesty to most illegal aliens who had come to the United States before 1982 and had lived there ever since. I understand why this was done, but I do not agree with it.

4. I liked the Kellogg-Briand Pact, because I think it is funny that someone would try to outlaw war. I also think that it is ridiculous that to get a country to comply with this treaty, they would have to go to war.

5. This is a hard question to answer because I did not live during the time period of the Great Depression. I cannot even begin to image how this economic crisis affected people. However, I do not think there is ever a quick fix for a poor economy. The New Deal was like a quick fix. It did not end the Depression. Some economists believe it actually made it worse! The social programs setup by this deal cost money to implement. Taxes were increased, especially for the rich. Instead of the New Deal, I would have proposed a bill that made the government more accountable for its spending, and I would have stopped much of the spending for a certain period of time. During this period I would have thought out a strategy for fixing the economy. I would still have pushed for certain social programs for people who were poor and sick with diseases. I also would not have taxed the rich as much as they did at the time, because rich people start companies and create more jobs.
6. I go both ways on the subject of dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. The question was whether we should drop the bomb and end the war quickly, or keep fighting the war and possibly lose the lives of many more Americans. I believe that we should have dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the Japanese were not about to surrender. However, I do not think that we fully understood what the bomb was capable of back then. I do not think that we realized that it would have effects on future generations.

7. This cartoon was drawn by someone who did not like Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), probably a Republican. This cartoon shows Theodore Roosevelt as a spirit, basically stating that he couldn’t believe how much power Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) had. The two men, with the huge bats, with the words House and the Senate written on them, represent FDR’s Democratic Congress, who aided in the quick passing all of the programs of the New Deal. The date of this cartoon was probably 1933.

1. I think I could have prepared myself better by studying for the test more then one week. I think I should brush up on the presidents and what they accomplished or did not accomplish.

2. I missed two questions about presidents. I like to read about presidents. I even have a book about all of the presidents up through George W. Bush.

3. In 1925, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a bill proposed by Representative John W. Butler of Macon County, which made it illegal to teach evolution in public schools. Governor Austin Peay signed the law, the Butler Act, mainly because he though the Butler Act was a protest against irreligious tendencies in America and highly doubted that it would be enforced. However shortly after, John Scopes was on trial for teaching evolution. Peay did not foresee that the ACLU would view the Butler Act as unconstitutional and use Scopes as a “test case”.

4. In 1915 the Germans started sinking ships regardless of type. They sank the Lusitania, a British ship, which had many American passengers. They sank the Sussex, an unarmed steamer. The Germans then vowed to stop sinking ships, but in 1917, started again. In 1917, the German foreign minister sent a telegram to Mexico trying to get the Mexicans to invade the United States. U.S Intelligence intercepted this note. The Americans and President Wilson were very angry. We had no choice but to get into the war.

5. I believe Teddy Roosevelt was a good president. Even though he was a Republican, he was not really conservative. He was not really liberal either. He had strong opinions and acted on them. For example, many liberals believe we should not get involved with other countries and their political problems, but he thought we should get involved whenever there was any wrong doing taking place. Another example is that environmental concerns are generally on the liberal agenda, but Roosevelt was a conservationist. He started the national park system.

6. Amendment 17 was ratified in 1913. It gave the right to elect senators to the people of each state. This replaced Article I, Section 3, Clause 1 of the Constitution, which gave the power to state legislatures to elect senators. This Amendment was proposed to promote democracy and to cut down on corruption. I think it definitely promotes democracy, but I don’t think it necessarily cuts down on corruption.

7. This cartoon shows Theodore C. Roosevelt as an angel trying to make peace between Russia and Japan and end the Russo - Japanese War.

Nick DeJ

1.	I believe that the 2008 presidential election is most similar to the 1960 presidential election. John F. Kennedy was the first (and to date, only) Catholic to be elected president. Barack Obama is the first African American to be elected president. Both of these elections are very historic.

2.	Imperialism is when a large country exerts authority over a smaller country. In my opinion imperialism has been given a bad rap. First of all, many people associate imperialism with America. They forget about British imperialism, Soviet imperialism, etc. Secondly, many people believe that when a country goes into a smaller country, the people of that smaller country are always oppressed. Lastly, many people believe that the larger country is enforcing the policy of imperialism only to gain from it. They never believe that the larger country might actually want to help the smaller country, which they often do. Many people do not know that President Theodore Roosevelt added a corollary (an addition) to the Monroe Doctrine. In it he stated that the United States, because it was a “civilized nation,” had the right to stop “chronic wrongdoing” throughout the Western Hemisphere.

3. The progressive movement was started by Robert Lafollette. The progressive movement was not affiliated with any political party. People in the progressive movement wanted “better” government. Many of the goals set forth by the progressive movement were commendable. They wanted laws against “sweatshops”, they wanted the privilege to vote for all women, and they wanted direct elections for Senators. Many of their goals were accomplished. While I do not agree with everything the progressives stood for, I think their intensions were good.

4. This cartoon shows President McKinley holding a boy who looks like a savage. The boy represents the Philippines. The “globe headed man” in the back represents the world, watching the president. At the time this cartoon appeared in the newspaper, McKinley had three choices: keep the Philippines as an American territory, give the Philippines back to Spain (throw the boy off the cliff) or declare independence for the Philippines. The cartoonist’s point of view shows that he wanted to keep the Philippines as a territory of America.

1. The “Gilded Age” is a name given by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) for the end of the 1880’s. That time period seemed like a golden age because of all the prosperity, but underneath all of this was really greed and corruption.

2. The trait I like most about Thomas Edison is his creative mind. I do believe that being homeschooled made him become very successful. I believe that being homeschooled made his creativity shine. If he would have stayed in public school he would have been left back many times. (In today’s age, he probably would have been put on medication.) He would have been made to believe that he could never amount to anything. Being homeschooled, and having his mother as his teacher unlocked his imagination, making him create all those wonderful inventions and obtain enormous wealth.

3. I agree with Frederick Jackson Turner, who wrote in 1893, that the frontier experience had promoted democracy. The people who settled the frontier faced many hardships and had to rely on themselves for survival. These people were not about to accept a government that would not allow them to have a say.

4. What made America the world leader in inventions was “Yankee Ingenuity” or American inventiveness. In addition, Congress passed the first patent law in 1790, which became a motivator for inventors.

5. I think political cartoons are sometimes influential. I think they are not as influential today as they were a long time ago. Two examples of political cartoons that were influential a long time ago are:

PUCK was a magazine in New York from 1876 to 1918. This magazine was known for its colored cartoons on political issues. It is believed that PUCK helped Grover Cleveland defeat James G. Blaine in the 1884 presidential election. In one cartoon, published in PUCK, drawn by Bernard Gillam, Blaine was portrayed as a man with tattoos all over his body, which were engraved with details of charges of political corruption.

Thomas Nast was an American political cartoonist. One character he drew a lot was William Tweed (“Boss” Tweed), who was a New York politician. In one cartoon, Nast showed Tweed and the Tammany Ring (an organization operated by Tweed) pointing fingers at each other in hopes of finding an answer to the question, “Who is stealing the people’s money?” Tweed requested that Nast stop drawing these cartoons. He even offered Nast a huge sum of money to leave New York and to study art in Europe. It is believed that Tweed said, “ My constituents can’t read. But, damn it they can see pictures.” Nast’s cartoons made people angry at Tweed and the Tammany Ring. Tweed was sent to prison, but escaped, only to be found later in Spain by a customs clerk who allegedly recognized him from Nast’s cartoons.

6. I believe the most influential person between 1877 and 1896 was John D Rockefeller. Rockefeller was an American industrialist, born in New York in 1839. In 1862 he went into business with Henry Flagler and with Samuel Andrews; the inventor of a cheap process for the refinement of crude petroleum. In 1870 he founded Standard Oil Company and began to drive out the competition and monopolize the industry. In 1882, Rockefeller formed the Standard Oil Trust of Ohio. The “trust” was a new type of business. Ten years after forming this trust, the Ohio Supreme Court forced him to break it up into twenty smaller businesses. In 1889, he formed a holding company for all of his businesses in the name of Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. However, in 1911, once again, Rockefeller was forced to break this company up into smaller pieces, this time by the US. Supreme Court. After this incident, Rockefeller retired. He devoted the rest of his life to giving away his money to charities.

7.	This cartoon appeared in a paperback book entitled ''Coin’s Financial School''. The author of the book, William H. Harvey, advocated bimetallism. Bimetallism is a monetary system in which two commodities, usually gold and silver, are used and coined, without any restrictions, at a ratio fixed by law. Harvey believed the ratio should be 16:1. He also believed that reliance on gold without anything else tended to tighten the money supply and lower prices. The cartoon represents Uncle Sam sinking in the gold while there is plenty of silver to be mined. Because of this, he will never reach prosperity.

1. I believe the three most important causes of the American Revolution were:

A. The colonists were not happy with "taxation without representation".

B. Many colonists believed in John Locke's philosophy that the relationship between the government and the people

was a social contract and England was not living up to its part of the contract.

C. Some of the colonists weren't English and did not feel they had to be loyal to England.

2. The colonists used the phrase "taxation without representation" because they were being taxed by England yet

they didn't elect anyone to Parliament to represent them.

3. The Boston Tea Party was a direct result of the Tea Act of 1773. This Act allowed the East India Company, a

large British company, to import tea to America and undersell colonial merchants. A bunch of colonists, led by Sam

Adams, dressed up as Indians and boarded the tea ships and threw all the tea into Boston Harbor.

4. I think that some of the people of Salem should be blamed for the Witch Trials. These people were angry with

the people they had accused of practicing witchcraft. Most of the accused were richer than the accusers. The

accusers made up lies to get them brought to trial and convicted in hopes of benefitting financially.

5. False. From the late 1600s until about 1760 was a time of prosperity in the colonies called salutary neglect.

During that time England did not enforce many rules and let the colonies "be". It did not matter whether a colony had

more religious freedom than another. After the French and Indian War, England was in great debt. Conflicts between

the British and the colonists began when England changed its policy of salutary neglect.

6. Debate: Do you think a jury should be able to ignore the law in order to find a defendant "not guilty?"

I don't think members of a jury should be able to ignore the law in order to find a person not guilty.

While laws can be (and should sometimes be) changed, people who do not obey the current laws should be punished in an

appropriate manner.

7. "Join, or Die" is a famous political cartoon created by Benjamin Franklin. The severed snake was used to depict

the colonies. Franklin felt they needed to unite to become strong and deal with the British as one. A rough

estimate for its date would be sometime in the 1750s or 1760s.
