James Richard "Rick" Perry (b. March 4, 1950) has served as the Republican Governor of Texas since December 2000, when he succeeded then-Governor George W. Bush and was elected to full four-year terms in 2002 and 2006. He easily won an unprecedented third full term in November 2010, after defeating by a wide margin U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in the GOP primary in March and then the Democratic former mayor of Houston, Bill White, in the general election.

In August 2011, Perry entered the 2012 race for President. His key positions include rejection of the theory of man-made global warming, equal time for creationism and evolution in schools, pro-Second Amendment, and pro-life with exceptions.

Career
A native of rural Haskell, Texas, north of Abilene, Perry obtained a degree in animal science from Texas A&M University in College Station. He is a former Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, having been first elected in 1984. He switched to Republican affiliation in 1989. The next year, he was elected Texas Agriculture Commissioner, having narrowly unseated the two-term populist Democrat Jim Hightower, a vocal supporter of Jesse Jackson in Texas. Perry won his first full term as governor in 2002, when he defeated the wealthy Laredo businessman A. R. "Tony" Sanchez by a three-to-two margin. He was reelected to another full term in 2006 with only 39 percent of the vote because the other 61 percent of the ballots was split among four rival general election candidates, including a former Repubican state comptroller, Carole Strayhorn of Austin, who ran as an independent.

Perry's brother-in-law, the brother of Anita Thigpen Perry, is Joseph E. Thigpen (born ca. 1946), a former district attorney and county attorney in West Texas. In 1994, Perry, reelected as the agriculture commissioner, asked incoming Republican Governor George W. Bush to name Joseph Thigpen to a vacancy on the state appeals court in Eastland County, Texas. Acting on a check into Thigpen's record by political advisor Karl Rove, Bush declined to appoint Thigpen to the bench. As a county attorney, Thigpen had been criticized for not being available when the commissioner's court needed his counsel. In 1998, Rick Perry became lieutenant governor in the second George W. Bush gubernatorial term. The Thigpen appointment controversy has been mentioned as a possible cause of a potential breach between Governors Bush and Perry.

Controversies
In 2007, Perry attempted to mandate by executive order a requirement that the HPV vaccine be administered to young girls as a condition of entering school. Defiant, Perry then felt he had no choice but to sign a bill overriding his mandate because it had been passed by a huge majority in both houses of the legislature.

He was criticized by the Dallas Morning News for traveling to Turkey in early June 2007 to give a speech to a "secret forum" on the topic of federalism, a topic on which Perry has little established expertise.

On June 15, 2007, Perry vetoed nearly fifty bills in one day. He also asked that legislators to pass more conservative bills, especially restricting freedom of movement for radical homosexual activists, in order to prevent harm to young people from their vile liberal propaganda..
In 2009, Perry drew fire for numerous statements that suggested Texas' legal right to secede from the union if it wanted to, a long-discredited legal interpretation which was the main argument of the terrorist Republic of Texas movement. While such statements were viewed with favor by the Texas Republican Party and helped him win the 2010 gubernatorial election, it is unclear whether they will come back to haunt his 2012 election prospects.

William the Conqueror lived from c.AD 1027 to 1087. His capital city was at Caen in northwestern France. He invaded England as the Duke of Normandy and won the Battle of Hastings in 1066. He then ruled England as William I. He is remembered as a harsh king who replaced most of the English landowners with a foreign aristocracy from France. He put down revolts with ruthless brutality.

In 1086 he compiled a book called the Domesday Book which listed every single town and village in England south of the River Tees, and how much tax it was possible to extract from them. Today this is a priceless document of medieval history and is an invaluable source in tracing ancestry. In principle entries in the book can still be used to raise taxes, although this rarely happens in practice.

He died in a battle in Normandy in 1087, and his body was so fat that his coffin burst during his funeral ceremony. He appointed his second and favourite son William Rufus as king of England in his place, leaving Normandy to his eldest son Robert.

Early Life
William was the illegitimate son of Robert I, Duke of Normandy. For this reason, he was called William the Bastard by his contemporaries. William's father died in 1035 when he was seven years old. William was declared his heir, with his great uncle serving as regent. William assumed more control of the government in 1042 when he put down a series of rebellions. In 1053, William married Matilda, the daughter of Count Baldwin of Flanders.

for the German Kaiser see Kaiser Wilhelm II

William II (Rufus) (c. 1060-1100), King of England, 1087-1100. Second son of William I, The Conqueror, was granted the Crown of England at the deathbed of his father, while Robert Curthose, the oldest son, became Duke of Normandy; decisions that caused resentment from Robert and much unrest amongst the barons who preferred a single ruler of both lands.

William Rufus had a busy reign that left no discernible lasting legacy. Within a year of his accession he had to put down a rebellion on behalf of Robert led by his uncle Odo, Bishop of Bayeux. Two years later saw him invading Normandy, with the aim of destablizing his brother, whilst at the same time resecuring parts of the duchy in danger of being lost to barons. In 1091 he forced King Malcolm III of Scotland to swear homage, and captured the town of Carlisle. In 1094 he was back in Normandy, and managed to persuade Philip I of France to cease aiding Robert.

In 1096 Robert left to join the First Crusade, pledging Normandy to William for finance for the Crusade, effectively giving William complete control of the duchy. He also made an unsuccessful foray into Wales.

He fell out with St. Anselm, the widely respected theologian and Archbishop of Canterbury, over the matter of ecclesiastical investitures and banished him. Anselm only returned after William’s death.

During his reign he was widely resented by the clergy for his rapacity and brutality. Whilst he was probably no worse than his father, he had not his predecessor’s tact. He had a short temper and a rough manner. He never married and there are no records of children; almost unheard of for royalty in that age. There were rumours of homosexuality. He was a good commander, and successful in most of his campaigns; but had few inclinations of mercy. He was a ruthless pillager of all he could get his hands on. He disliked the English and had no respect for their culture or possessions.

William Rufus’ death is more notable than his life. He was killed by an arrow whilst hunting in the New Forest. It is not known if the shot was accidental, but certainly there is no evidence it was deliberate. His younger brother, Henry, who was nearby, took off to secure the treasury at Winchester and then to London to have himself crowned, as soon as he was told of the death. The offending archer, one Walter Tyrrel, took off to France; but appeared back in England some time later. Whether his return was allowed by Henry’s gratitude for a job well done, or his thankful acknowledgement of serendipity, cannot be known.
