Critics doubt that there are any medicinal effects of marijuana, other than an overall effect sought by drug addicts.
Opponents of medical marijuana charge that efforts to legalize medical marijuana are intended to be a step towards complete decriminalization and generally decry marijuana as a "gateway drug" despite the fact that most marijuana users never become addicted to harder drugs.

Medical marijuana has been legalized in 13 states, starting with California in 1996. While many opponents say that wider acceptance of medical marijuana will lead to increased use by children, there is no evidence to support this. To the contrary, the number of states has nearly doubled since 2002, while the Swiss Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Problems study showed marijuana use among American teens declined from 2002-06. Besides having no impact (or perhaps discouraging use) of marijuana among teens, public support of medical marijuana laws has increased since states began enacting their own laws on the issue in 1996.

In California, medical marijuana is mostly available from patient collectives, but has been sold in vending machines, similar to automated prescription dispensers at some pharmacies , however medical marijuana distribution remains illegal except for federal patients included in the Compassionate Investigational New Drug (IND) program. The program began in 1978 but no longer accepts new applicants, and owing to a Supreme Court ruling the remaining patients (Seven as of 10/6/09) receive 300 joints each month from the federal government.
Other than the fact that there is no citation for such a ridiculous claim, there are actually many chemotherapeutic drugs that contain ethanol to combat certain cancer cells, mainly hepatic cell carcinoma (see ). Along those lines, THC has been used in chemo/radiation patients to ease nausea and vomiting (it is a relatively effective anti-emetic, in my medical experience with chemo patients), and also to induce hunger in starving patients who have lost any taste for food. The addiction potential for marijuana, as well as the "gateway drug" title, is greatly refuted as well. As far as heroin goes, heroin was first synthesized in Germany -- heroin is the German word for hero -- as a cure for morphine addiction. Of course, it was found that heroin has a much higher addiction potential, but the concept is still being used today (see methadone). I don't see how "medical gambling" is even a comparison. These are drugs that do have beneficial medical uses, regardless of the stigma. Of course people are going to abuse the system but that is not a reason to criminalize an alternative medicine for those who really need it. Do you really want the government to make your health and medicinal choices for you, that should be between you and your doctor.
:I don't know much about this topic. But if you have some good sources, why not read up on it and improve the article? 01:38, 26 July 2007 (EDT)
I'd like to see the picture of the marijuana vending machine changed. Obviously the image is a gag because 1. All white, photoshoot background. 2. Marijuana is never that cheap. Also I think that's an older picture from some pot mag. How about this image since that is actually what the marijuana vending machines do look like. It will help Conservapdeia display images releating to the the truth of a subject, rather than one's ideas or misconceptions.

Medical Beer/Heroin
Other than the fact that there is no citation for such a ridiculous claim, there are actually many chemotherapeutic drugs that contain ethanol to combat certain cancer cells, mainly hepatic cell carcinoma (see ). Along those lines, THC has been used in chemo/radiation patients to ease nausea and vomiting (it is a relatively effective anti-emetic, in my medical experience with chemo patients), and also to induce hunger in starving patients who have lost any taste for food. The addiction potential for marijuana, as well as the "gateway drug" title, is greatly refuted as well. I'm not editing this article for fear of banning or reversion, but this is just food for thought. I'm not an advocate of de-criminalization, but the medical uses of THC should not be downplayed.

==Bold New Edits==

Anyone with any problems, please find some backup before placing your opinion, and please don't destroy mine. Anyone with anything to say can at the very least be more convincing than a "medical beer" or "medical heroin" argument. --Geoguy91 17:51, 21 April 2008 (EDT)
