Capitalism essentially becomes the practice of making the rich richer and the poor poorer. I do not see why the failure of one or two states that pretended to be communist so they could garner the support of the masses makes capitalism any less abhorrent. And Terry, spouting the occasional occasional fragment of fortune-cookie wisdom does not improve your argument, nor does it compensate for the unequivocally unamicable tone of your response. I mean no offense, I simply didn't expect to be greeted with such open hostility in response to what was intended as a partially fatuous comment. --<font color="#ff0000">Angry</font><font color="#000000">Communist</font> 23:03, 4 January 2008 (EST)

In my short time here I've noticed two blocks, one with an accompanying IP block. I understand that IP blocks are good site policy for persistent vandals, but absent a showing that the targeted vandal is in fact a persistent, repeat offender, is there any reason to block permanently, other than to suppress dissent? Isn't it conceivable that you just blocked a public computer, or a public WiFi net, meaning now legitimate users can't visit? Seems to me like a poor compromise between security and freedom.-PhoenixWright 14:07, 3 March 2008 (EST)
Aggrieved's Talk Page Debate
Terry, you came to my Talk page and demanded that I "had better: 1) Provide a citation for your allegation that a significant proportion of Guantanamo detainees have turned out to be innocent of the war crimes imputed to them; 2) Retract your last comment and apologize to me; and 3) Prepare to face blockage for contempt of the administration."

My response:

1) - Multiple citations provided. It is duly noted you never provided a single citation to back up your own false claim; 2) - Not a chance; 3) - No problem. This dialog will be in the record and your willingness to disregard fact, remain uninformed about current affairs, and aggressively police your own mistruths will be duly noted. Martyrdom in the name of truth can be my legacy.

In response to your failure to prove your case, and my success in proving mine, I now demand you:
1. Withdraw your claim on Main:Talk Page that "to a man, every one of those released detainess has turned up doing exactly the same thing again", publicly.
2. Apologize to me, publicly, for your aggressive tone and ill-informed opinion.

Thank you. Aggrieved 21:04, 14 June 2008 (EDT)

I'd like to take this opportunity to express my complete and unreserved contempt for your recent behaviour. You backed yourself into a corner and are now lashing out at those who had the temerity to point out as much. It's OK to make mistakes. All of this could have been avoided with a simple "Actually, that was a bit of sweeping statement. What I meant to say was..." Your name is TerryH, not TerryK, so stop damn well acting like him. --Leda 10:55, 15 June 2008 (EDT)

The Scopes Trial took place in Tennessee in 1925. It was engineered as a challenge to the state's Butler Act which prohibited public schools from teaching the theory that man had evolved from more primitive life forms. The willing defendant, John Scopes, was duly convicted, although this was later overturned on a technicality. The trial gained notoriety after it was dramatized for both stage (1955) and screen (1960). Titled Inherit the Wind, both dramatizations distorted the facts of the case and were promoted to harm Christianity.

Publicity Motivation
The impetus for the Scopes trial began in a meeting among town leaders at a drugstore in Dayton, Tennessee, in response to a newspaper advertisement placed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) offering to provide legal services to anyone willing to be prosecuted under the Butler Act. Town leaders agreed that a trial would provide publicity to the town, whose population had dwindled to 1,800. The town leaders found a willing defendant in John Scopes, a gym teacher and football coach who also substituted (sometimes as a biology teacher), though Scopes could not recall ever teaching evolution. John Scopes told the town leaders, "If you can prove that I've taught evolution and that I can qualify as a defendant, then I'll be willing to stand trial."

Grand Jury
Racing other Tennessee towns, Judge John T. Raulston accelerated the convening of the grand jury and "...all but instructed the grand jury to indict Scopes, despite the meager evidence against him and the widely reported stories questioning whether the willing defendant had ever taught evolution in the classroom." He was indicted on May 25, after three students testified against Scopes at the Grand Jury, at Scopes' behest.

The Trial
The trial in 1925 of John Scopes for teaching evolution in Tennessee was a defeat of Darwinism. The ACLU and liberal trial lawyer Clarence Darrow brought the Scopes case in the hopes of winning a public relations and legal victory, but in fact William Jennings Bryan, the evangelical Christian who had been Secretary of State in the Wilson Administration, won a legal victory in the trial.

The ACLU challenged a Tennessee statute, the Butler Act, that imposed a fine for teaching in government schools that man descended from more primitive life forms. The statute did not prohibit teaching most aspects of evolution. The textbook at issue in the case taught eugenics, including that man supposedly descended from lower life forms and that some racial groups had evolved to more advanced levels than others.

The textbook also featured the fraudulent Piltdown Man. At the time, Darwinists claimed that this and eugenics were indisputable science to be taught to students.

Bryan quoted for the court how Darrow had previously claimed that murder defendants Leopold and Loeb were driven to crime by what they were taught, which was Nietzsche's atheistic philosophy. Bryan quoted Darrow as saying that "Is there any blame attached because somebody took Nietzsche's philosophy seriously and fashioned his life on it? ... The university would be more to blame than he is. ... Your honor, it is hardly fair to hang a 19-year-old boy for the philosophy that was taught him at the university."

Bryan was an extraordinary speaker, recognized to be among the best in American history. Darrow wanted to prevent Bryan from making a persuasive closing argument to the jury, and Darrow searched for another way to try to score points for his side.

So Darrow stunned the court by requesting to cross-examine Bryan, in the hope that Bryan, like many attorneys, would be a poor witness. Darrow's attempt was unprecedented, because trial attorneys almost never take the witness stand in their own cases. Bryan agreed only on the condition that he could cross-examine Darrow. Based on that agreement, Bryan took the witness stand.

A witness in a trial is always at a disadvantage on cross-examination, because he can only answer questions that are posed by a hostile adversary. On cross-examination, Attorneys are allowed to ask leading(yes or no) questions to force the desired response, unlike on direct examination. Attorneys are particularly vulnerable, because their knowledge of the law and tendency to speak in legalese hinder their performance.

Darrow undoubtedly thought that he could turn Bryan into the proverbial buffoon that liberals wanted. As the transcript reveals, however, Bryan got the better of his accuser. Bryan repeatedly turned the tables on Darrow's questions, which the large courtroom audience found amusing at Darrow's expense. Here is a sample:

:Bryan--These gentlemen have not had much chance--they did not come here to try this case. They came here to try revealed religion. I am here to defend it and they can ask me any question they please.

:Judge--All right. (Applause in audience.) …

:Bryan--Those [the audience] are the people whom you insult.

:Darrow--You insult every man of science and learning in the world because he does believe in your fool religion. ....

:Darrow: Wait until you get to me [N.B. this apparently refers to Darrow's agreement to be a witness]. Do you know anything about how many people there were in Egypt 3,500 years ago, or how many people there were in China 5,000 years ago?

:Bryan--No.

:Darrow--Have you ever tried to find out?

:Bryan--No, sir. You are the first man I ever heard of who has been in interested in it. (Laughter)

:Darrow--Mr. Bryan, am I the first man you ever heard of who has been interested in the age of human societies and primitive man?

:Bryan--You are the first man I ever heard speak of the number of people at those different periods.

:Darrow--Where have you lived all your life?

:Bryan--Not near you. (Laughter and applause).

Darrow tried again and again to trap Bryan, and he sometimes succeeded. For example, Darrow grilled Bryan on the topic of Bryan's literal interpretation of the Bible. Notably, Darrow successfully embarrassed Bryan on the issue of how the sun stood still for Joshua in the Old Testament.

:Darrow--The Bible says Joshua commanded the sun to stand still for the purpose of lengthening the day, doesn't it, and you believe it?

:Bryan--I do.

:Darrow--Do you believe at that time the entire sun went around the earth?

:Bryan--No, I believe that the earth goes around the sun.

:Darrow--Do you believe that the men who wrote it thought that the day could be lengthened or that the sun could be stopped?

:Bryan--I don't know what they thought.

:Darrow--You don't know?

:Bryan--I think they wrote the fact without expressing their own thoughts.

:Darrow-- Now, Mr. Bryan, have you ever pondered what would have happened to the earth if it had stood still?

:Bryan--No.

:Darrow--You have not?

:Bryan-- No; the God I believe in could have taken care of that, Mr. Darrow.

:Darrow-- I see. Have you ever pondered what would naturally happen to the earth if it stood still suddenly?

:Bryan-- No.

:Darrow--Don't you know it would have been converted into molten mass of matter?

:Bryan--You testify to that when you get on the stand, I will give you a chance.

:Darrow--Don't you believe it?

:Bryan--I would want to hear expert testimony on that.

:Darrow--You have never investigated that subject?

:Bryan--I don't think I have ever had the question asked.

:Darrow--Or ever thought of it?

:Bryan--I have been too busy on thinks that I thought were of more importance than that.

A later exchange ended, once again, with the audience laughing:

:Darrow--I will read it to you from the Bible: "And the Lord God said unto the serpent, because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life." Do you think that is why the serpent is compelled to crawl upon its belly?

:Bryan--I believe that.

:Darrow--Have you any idea how the snake went before that time?

:Bryan--No, sir.

:Darrow--Do you know whether he walked on his tail or not?

:Bryan--No, sir. I have no way to know. (Laughter in audience).

The conclusion
The next day, it was Darrow's turn to be cross-examined. But instead of upholding his end of the bargain, Darrow stunned the public by taking the unprecedented step of asking the jury for a guilty verdict against his client, the defendant teacher John Scopes.

After 8 days of trial, the jury gave Darrow exactly what he requested, after 9 minutes of deliberation. Scopes was found guilty on July 21 and ordered to pay a fine of $100, which was eliminated on a technicality on appeal.

The movie and play
The play Inherit the Wind, and the adapted movie, were fictional accounts of the Scopes Trial. Several modifications were made; characters names were changed, and many crucial facts were changed. The authors have said that the play was really an attempt to mock Senator Joseph McCarthy, and to equate anti-communism with anti-intellectualism. The movie featured the popular Spencer Tracy as Clarence Darrow, and even garnered a few Academy Award nominations.

The movie features an angry mob trying to lynch a jailed teacher; in fact, the ACLU ran advertisements with offers to pay expenses for a teacher to volunteer for the case, and Scopes was never jailed and never paid even a fine.

The movie version heaped mockery on any argument that teaching evolution could be socially harmful.

The movie portrayed the character based on Bryan as a complete buffoon. Bryan's death was also portrayed as happening in the courthouse, when in fact he was an elderly man suffering from diabetes who died peacefully in his sleep.

American history books often describe this case as a catalyst for evolution supporters.

Aftermath
Bryan, a 65-year-old diabetic lacking in modern treatments, died peacefully in his sleep during his afternoon nap after church five days after the conclusion of the Scopes trial. Bryan's victory in the Scopes trial was a fitting end to a principled, illustrious career. Scopes never had to pay the fine - the judge had set the amount but Tennessee law at the time prohibited judges from setting fines over $50.

The law challenged by the ACLU in the Scopes Trial remained in effect for over 50 more years. In 1967, Tennessee repealed the Butler Act, and in 1968, the Supreme Court ruled in Epperson v. Arkansas, 393 U.S. 97, that such bans on teaching are unconstitutional if they are primarily religious in intent.

Tennessee continued to downplay evolution in its schools until 2005.
Possible Inclusions
A few suggestions for the list, off the top of my head: Marilyn Monroe would be a prime (and notorious) example. Chris Farley, who's stated goal was to live and die like Belushi. Janis Joplin. Anna Nicole Smith. Freddie Prinze. Rock Hudson. And depending on how comprehensive you want the list to be, there's an almost endless parade of people who were more famous as part of a group than as individuals, such as Keith Moon or Dennis Wilson.--RossC 08:16, 25 January 2008 (EST)
The people putting these lists together do not seem to realize that in making a case linking "Hollywood values"--not coherently defined in the article, by the way--to early death or criminality it is not enough simply to cite examples; it needs to be demonstrated that these alleged consequences are more likely to occur to those who adopt these values than to the general population. How did Hollywood values contribute to his death? TheGuy 04:49, 1 February 2008 (EST)

:It is clear upon reviewing this and this that nobody has justified how Hollywood values contributed to Ledger's death. We all acknowledge that during his life he probably did take drugs and was a selfish individual, however there is no evidence that his overdose on legal prescription drugs was a suicide attempt or reasonably affected by his drug habit. Given that the example is used in the context of death ("Hollywood values are deadly. Some examples include:") then I think it would be prudent to remove Ledger's entry until sufficient evidence connecting Hollywood to his death has been found, otherwise we are just sponsoring gossip. ==So?==

So? What does this article intend to prove? What is its thesis? Is this article intended to somehow connect the unfortunate deaths of some people who got too involved in drugs or alcohol as an indicator that hollywood films are a bad influence?
Is this article supposed to somehow connect these so-called "Hollywood Values" with liberal politics?
Last time I checked, Rush Limbaugh had had an embarrassing addiction to opiate painkillers, George W. Bush had admitted to a cocaine problem, and Mel Gibson had such a drinking problem that he was accusing "the Jews" of all the evils that had ever plagued him. These three men, for example, are CONSERVATIVES. Mel Gibson even functions as part of the industry centered in HOLLYWOOD. Why is good ol' Mel not mentioned in this article?
Is the anti-liberal bias in this article too overwhelming to include even one conservative who's had problems?
Or, as I suspect, is Conservapedia wearing the type of blinders that see any conservative's troubles with drugs or alcohol as a momentary temptation by the liberal side?

If you simply blame everything on your opponents, all the time, then you never have to think it through or acknowledge reality. Seems to be the basic M.O. here.

I, for one, fail to see how Heath Ledger's accidental death from combining the wrong medications (all of which seem to have been prescribed for him) as indicative of a "Hollywood Value" system. Well, I'm sure the response will go like this: "He was NAKED! Surely, nakedness is indicative of SOME evil-doing. After all, LIBERALS SLEEP NAKED! No God-fearing person should sleep sans pajamas!"
Not entirely accurate
This article doesn't really give an accurate definition of the phrase, 'Hollywood Values'. I don't really blame you, as it is very difficult, if not impossible, to accurately define it. I also made this point on the 'Liberal Denial' Talk Page, so I'll just copy the relevant part of what I said here:

This phrase means different things to different people. Simply Googling the phrase gives many different meanings. To some, 'Hollywood values' means exactly what Conservapedia says it means. To others, it is summarised as, 'Save a tree, kill a baby. Ban cigarettes, legalize pot. Screw the Iraqi’s, save Darfur. McCarthy is bad, Castro is good. Bush is Hitler, Che is a hero. Save the planet, live in a mansion.' To still others, it means being very egotistical, not very well grounded in reality, and not having a lot of common sense. To yet others, it's all about doing anything at all, as long as you're paid enough. And, by far, that is not a complete list of the various different things this phrase actually means to various different people. Urushnor 14:48, 13 February 2008 (EST)

Richard Jeni suffered from clinical depression. Do you think that might have had something to do with his suicide? Clara Blandick was in pain and facing blindness. What has her suicide got to do with Hollywodd values? Sharon Tate was murdered by the Manson family. Why is she in the article? The circumstances of Virginia Rappe's death remain unknown and controversial. What has Heath Ledger's accidental overdose got to do with Hollywood or any other values? What has John Bonham got to do with Hollywood? The inquest into the death of Kenneth Williams returned an open verdict as it was not posibble to determine whether his overdose was accidental. In any case he was suffering from declining health and depression at the time.
This article just cherry-picks famous people (or...not, in the case of "1920s cornettists" and similar cases), and stretches a granule, albeit a malleable one, miles and miles away from the true root causes of their deaths to make some point that these people's deaths are connected to some Spectre of Glittery Death looming up over Mulholland. How many famous people are there? There must be...untold millions of YouTube phenoms, game show contestants, sandwich shop spokesman, and to highlight a few flare-ups is entirely counter to any kind of legitimacy an encyclopedic volume should have. When I look at that list, I see Sid Vicious, who, as far as I know, lived in the UK for 98% of his life. I see Elvis Presley (maybe there should be a "Memphis values" page). And Sharon Tate...Sharon Tate? Wasn't Manson actually trying to kill somebody else, someone who wasn't there (supposedly a record honcho or someother such person who denied him a chance to be on a Beach Boys record). If that's how we're gonna be about it, and say innocent pregnant sober bystanders are perpetrators of Hollywood values, then let's say those whores that Jack the Ripper killed were victims of "West End values". ::I don't see anywhere in my graph where I denied that liberal values have consequences. I think that this whole liberal/conservative jive is basically a distraction, an abstract that exists only theoretically, and even then, as a theory lend creedence by consensus. If these people's death is going to be attributed to a set of industries in a geographic location, then it's already got the integrity of arguing about air temperature. Who cares? I'm not some objectivist/nihilist (probably mutually exclusive philosophies, but often combined nonetheless by people who don't understand them), so I'm not going to deforest the issue by going on some bleat about how we're all just "computers made out of meat" or whatnot, but I think this issue is...not an issue. I'm not arguing at it from any perspective other than one which states all perspectives are already invalid if it comes from a person who cares about things like this. So to say that anybody's neurons are any better than anyone else's simply because of the choices which all the electric 1's and 0's in our brains combine to create, is stupid. Even the whole idea of "liberal denial", which is supposed to be some kind of searing label which supercedes all the fray of bickering and mudslinging, has been trampled on by reductive childishness that's rampant here. Liberal denial. That's all your arguement is here. You'll say, I'm using liberal denial because what I'm saying is a denial coming from a liberal viewpoint. You define my point of view, incorrectly, sure, but you're still just defining it. Not refining it, not clarifying or showing how it's wrong and maybe trying to excise the benign liberal tumors you probably surmise exist within my brain stem, you're just defining it. I should have taken a hint from the logo and realized that "applying logos" and "slapping labels" is basically the fundamental economy of Conservapedia. ::::::I was going by the link above, wherein a stranger with two kitchen knives approached them and began stabbing people. This is a much more detailed account, but no less tragic. His friend thought a stranger had stolen his phone and accused the guy of it, and later the guy comes back with some friends, one of whom starts stabbing people.
::::::At the very least, this change to the article is in very bad taste so soon. But again, you own this place, so I guess you get to make that final call. I obviously disagree with the whole premise of the article, so I don't expect you to take my views much to account on the matter.--<font color="#000066" >Tom Moore</font>fiat justitia ruat coelum 20:14, 25 May 2008 (EDT)
::At best, it's a weak example that doesn't serve the broad thrust of your argument particularly well. As charity decreases, it looks variously: inappropriate -> ridiculous -> mean-spirited. If you insist on keeping it, I'd suggest making a new section and leading in with the kind of qualifications you made above. --Leda 20:22, 25 May 2008 (EDT)

Leda: removing Rob Knox example per talk page

The phrase Hollywood values refers to the lack of morals and values in Hollywood culture, which is characterized by decadence, narcissism, rampant drug use, extramarital sex, sexually-transmitted disease, lawlessness and death. A poll by MSNBC said that 60% of Americans agree that "Hollywood's values are not in line with the rest of America and that the quality of movies has dimished in recent years."

Hollywood values can include a flagrant disrespect and disregard for:

* marriage and abstinence
* patriotism
* religion
* accountability
* family responsibilities, like childrearing
* laws that apply to everyone else

Deaths
Hollywood values are deadly. Some examples include:

Crime
Hollywood values often include being arrested or convicted for a variety of crimes. Here are some examples:

* Winona Ryder was convicted of convicted of vandalism and grand theft for stealing designer merchandise worth $5,560.40.
*Hugh Grant was arrested in 1995 when found in a car with a prostitute.
*Stacy Keach, movie actor, was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment in the United Kingdom in 1984 after being arrested at London Heathrow Airport in possession of a large quantity of cocaine.
*Kiefer Sutherland was given a 48-day sentence for DUI in 2007, an offence committed while still on probation following a 2004 conviction for DUI.
*Snoop Dogg, a popular rapper, was arrested in 2006 for marijuana possession.
*Roman Polanski, Polish-born film producer, is unable to return to Hollywood as he skipped bail and fled to France after being convicted in 1978 on charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a thirteen-year old girl.
* Rapper DMX (Earl Simmons) was caught on camera drag racing at a speed over 110 miles on a freeway, and then a SWAT team was used to arrest him three days later on drug and animal cruelty charges. "The Maricopa County sheriff's office says the 37-year-old, whose real name is Earl Simmons, at first tried to barricade himself in his bedroom. He came out as a SWAT team entered during the early-morning raid Friday."

Falsehoods
Hollywood values perpetuates liberal-driven falsehoods:

:Adherents to Hollywood values "green-lighted a troika of Matthew Shepherd movies after he was senselessly killed because it affirmed their gut feeling that a gay young man living in backward America is destined for death at the hands of hateful ultraconservatives. A street in West Hollywood still stands in his name despite ABC News reporting the story false: He was killed by crazed meth addicts for drugs and money -- not because he was gay. Isn't that tragic enough? Yet Shepherd is still the icon of gay victims' rights, and the mistaken story of his "fate" soon thereafter befell Jake Gyllenhaal's character in "Brokeback Mountain." The Oscar statuette stands as the exclamation point.

:Inherit the Wind <fill in>

Divorce
*Elizabeth Taylor has been married eight (8) times.
*Valerie Bertinelli said her divorce from Eddie Van Halen was caused by infidelity and drug use - by her too. She said she was "destroying my body," trying to keep up with a rock-star lifestyle.
*Zsa Zsa Gabor has been married nine (9) times.
*Mickey Rooney has been married eight (8) times, but has been with his last wife for 30 years after embracing religion and abandoning his previous lifestyle.

Offensive Behavior
* Trashing hotel rooms is a favorite form of offensive behavior by Hollywood types. Many examples are readily available on the internet.
*Mel Gibson, a Christian actor and director, was arrested after being stopped for driving at 84 mph in a 45 mph zone on a notoriously dangerous road in Malibu, California. A breathalyzer test confirmed he was drunk and next to him was an open bottle of Tequila; after being arrested he hurled Anti-Semitic abuse at a Jewish police officer.
*The parents of Miley Cyrus, just 15 years old, allowed Annie Liebowitz to pose the starlet without a shirt or bra (aka "topless") and with just a sheet covering her front for Vanity Fair magazine. "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

Rehab
Hollywood values often result in celebrities going into rehab. Here are some examples:

*Kirsten Dunst checked into the Cirque Lodge treatment facility in Utah after a week of hard partying at the Sundance Film Festival, according to a source at the lodge, although the lodge's director of operations denies this.

The following all checked into the above facility seeking treatment for various psychological problems:

*Lindsay Lohan
*Eva Mendes
*Mary-Kate Olsen

Hypocrisy
Hollywood personalities often propose legislation such as outlawing private gun ownership, or speak out against things such as anti-gun laws, but have at the same time acted in movies contrary to their public opinions:

* George Clooney on hearing that fellow actor and guns-rights advocate, Charlton Heston, suffers from Alzheimer's disease, said: "I don't care. Charlton Heston is the head of the National Rifle Association. He deserves whatever anyone says about him." Clooney stared in the film The Peacemaker, in which he played an American military man defending the country from a nuclear attack; scenes in the film showed him using a gun to defend himself and others.

* Mark Wahlberg upon meeting Charlton Heston on the set of the remake of Planet of the Apes, Wahlberg rudely told Heston, "It was very disturbing meeting you." Later, Wahlberg would have this to say at the MTV Movie Awards: "I believe Charlton Heston is America's best villain because he loves guns so much. Maybe he should get the award for being president of the National Rifle Association." Wahlberg's character in Planet of the Apes uses a gun to defend himself and other humans from the apes who would rule over them.

Books
* Hollywood Against America
* Hollywood Babylon (1965) by Kenneth Anger (US edition)
* Hollywood Babylon II (1984) by Kenneth Anger

Hydrogen is the most abundant of all the elements, and has the chemical symbol H and an atomic number of 1. Despite this abundance, naturally occurring elemental hydrogen is extremely rare on Earth.

Composition of the atom
Hydrogen atoms normally consist of a single proton and electron, with no neutron. Other isotopes are formed as the atom gains neutrons: deuterium (one neutron) and tritium (two neutrons). Tritium is radioactive.

Compounds
Hydrogen can be found in both organic and inorganic compounds. It is an important component of water.

Fuel for vehicles
Hydrogen is a principal component of fuel cells, which have the potential to be a major form of alternative energy in the future. Fuel cells are very clean energy sources; their only by-products are water and heat. Since no pollutants or greenhouse gases are produced, the use of fuel cells could provide cleaner air and potentially slow down global warming.

Unfortunately, hydrogen is not a viable fuel source at present. Today's average car, for example, would require an unfeasibly large fuel tank to carry enough hydrogen for practical purposes. Hydrogen is also extremely flammable and suitable safeguards are needed to reduce the chances of a fatal explosion in an accident.

If hydrogen could be used in cars, it would be important in establishing the hydrogen economy.

James Joyce (1882 - 1941) was an author and poet born in Dublin, Ireland, to Roman Catholic parents. Joyce was initially educated by the Jesuit order, but he rejected Catholicism by the age of 16. Despite this tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church, the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas would remain a strong influence on him. He lived in poverty until the publishing of his controversial novel Ulysses in 1922. Joyce revolutionized the treatment of plot and characterization in fiction and is best known for his use of the stream of consciousness style.
Amino acids are a group of 21 different molecules which, when bonded in sequence, make up proteins. They consist of an organic side chain bonded to an amine and a carboxylic acid (-COOH) group (hence the name amino acid). These two different functional groups make amino acids bifunctional.
α-amino acids
α-amino acids (α is the Greek letter alpha) have the general formula RCH(NH2)COOH. There are around 20 naturally occurring α-amino acids which polymerise by condensation polymerisation to form all known polypeptides (which form the primary structure of proteins) in biological organisms during gene translation.

Zwitterions
Due to the acidic carboxylic acid group and the alkaline amine group on amino acids they can form ions with themselves called zwitterions. The word zwitterion is derived from the German for hermaphrodite, and in this case refers to the fact that amino acid zwitterions have both positive and negative charges.

Formation of zwitterions
Zwitterions form from amino acids when the hydrogen from the carboxylic acid group (-COOH) dissociates from the molecule and forms a dative covalent bond with the nitrogen in the amine group (-NH2). This forms an ion with two charges: RCH(NH3+)COO-.

Physical properties of α-amino acids due to zwitterions
The formation of zwitterions dramatically affects the physical properties of amino acids. The zwitterion is the predominant form in the solid phase and aqueous solution. Due to the two charges on zwitterions, there is a much stronger intermolecular attraction between the ions, raising the melting point of an amino acid far above the melting point of organic compounds with similar molecular mass and numbers of electrons. For example, the amino acid glycine decomposes at 262°C (without melting) where propanoic acid melts at -21°C.

Optical isomerism of amino acids
All α-amino acids except glycine CH2(NH2)COOH have four different groups around the alpha carbon, forming a chiral centre and allowing optical isomerism to occur.

A gun is a weapon which fires a bullet, dart or other projectile at extremely high speeds. As a range weapon of formidable efficacy, it affords its bearer the power of life and death over any living target, without the bearer necessarily having to place him/herself in harm's way. Given the God-like power that such weapons afford, and the seductive nature of power in general, it is unsurprising that those with the right to bear them are often implacably opposed to the withdrawal or circumscription of that right.

Police are routinely armed in some countries, but not in others. Some question whether unarmed police can properly protect citizens from gun-wielding criminals, as they must wait for the arrival of specialist firearms officers before being able to act.

The four main types of modern firearms today are bolt-operated, pump action, semi-automatic, and automatic weapons. In a bolt-action weapon, each new round must be chambered manually, by moving the breech to eject the empty casing. In pump action guns (usually shotguns) a new round must be manually chambered by pulling back on the underside of the weapon. In semi-automatic weapons, each pull of the trigger fires a bullet. In fully automatic weapons, bullets will be fired as long as the trigger is depressed until either the trigger is released, the gun jams, or runs out of ammunition.

Gun control
The cultural issues surrounding guns are many and widely debated. Conservatives generally prefer to reserve for the individual the right to self-defense through the use of guns and other weapons. Liberals generally prefer to delegate this right to guards, police, and the military, or even completely deny that it is an important right.fact

Studies have repeatedly shown that law-abiding and right-thinking citizens carrying guns are statistically an effective deterrent against crimes. Further comparison between different states by John Lott indicates that states that have more conservative gun laws have distinctly lower crime rates, violent crime rates, and firearms homicides than states with more liberal gun laws.

Guns are also a defense against a tyrannical government. If a person has the power to take the life of another, other people will not commit crimes against them. The 20th century has proved repeatedly that a well-armed and dedicated guerrilla army can defeat even the strongest occupying army using only small arms.

Science Fiction
Science fiction, such as Star Trek, has postulated many different types of directed energy weapons. These are guns that fire beams, waves, or packets of energy. Some energy guns can be set to stun, not to wound or kill. Most firearms legislation would not classify these as firearms, so their ownership would be unrestricted, as are many non-firearm weapons such as flame throwers.
