King David

Kittysayshello:

David was the second king of Israel from 1010-970 BC.
He defeated Goliath, the champion of the Philistines and later captured Jerusalem, which he made the capital city. David greatly extended the borders of Israel which he ruled as a united kingdom.

David was the son of Jesse and was "the least of his father's household". He was brought into king Saul's household to play the harp to calm Saul's nerves, which had been increasingly troubled since he had sinned against God and was told by Samuel that the kingship would be taken from him and given to another by God. David had been a shepard who protected his sheep from wild animals. He witnessed all of the warriors of Israel cower before a great Philistine giant, Goliath who would taunt them daily. David, a mere boy in the eyes of people who had no military training, stood up and accepted Goliath's challenge. Saul offered him his armor, but David declined. David slew Goliath with a sling stone and cut off his head, mustering the armies of Israel to rise up and scatter the Philistines. Saul became jealous of David and what he had accomplished, especially when he heard the people singing "Saul has slain his thousands, and David, his tens of thousands."

David continued to play the harp for Saul, but it did not have the same affect. One day when David was playing Saul threw a spear at him to try to kill him; it missed. With the help of Saul's son Jonathan, who was David's best friend, David fled the palace and went into hiding. David joined up with the Philistines at one point, but only as a ruse where he actually attacked their living areas without them knowing it. David was pursued by Saul and his armies and took flight. One night he could have killed Saul, but refused to do it, instead taking a piece of his garments to let him know what had happened. Saul was contrite that evening, but soon continued to pursue David and his followers. David continued to grow in strength while Saul became weaker. Finally, Saul and his son Jonathan were killed in battle with the Philistines. David grieved and became king of Judah. David continued to clash with the house of Saul until Saul's son Ish-Bosheth was murdered in his own bed and the killers took the head to David seeking a reward. They were executed for killing their king.

David greatly expanded the borders of Israel, defeating every foe he faced. However, his own life was not without controversy. He lost his child due to his adultery with Bathsheba; one of his sons Absalom killed his brother Amnon after he raped and discarded his sister Tamar; later Absalom rebelled against David and forced him to flee. David took back his throne, but Absalom was killed even though David had ordered his life to be spared. David also had to live through a revolt by Sheba, but he too was vanquished. Furthermore, because David sinned in taking a census of the land, 70 thousand people fell to pestilence. And yet through it all, David was called a man after God's own heart, due to his true and deep grievings for his wrongs. David wrote most of the Psalms in the Bible including the famous Psalm 23, The Lord is my Shepherd

David died after ruling 40 years, 33 of them in Jerusalem, and set up his son Solomon as his successor. David was not allowed to build the temple because he was a man of 'blood' (a military commander), but his son could. David was part of the lineage of Jesus.

Sex

2007-07-28T04:01:24Z

Kittysayshello:

Gender is the attribute of being either male or female. Gender differs from sex in that while sex deals with the biological attributes of male and female, gender may be understood more as a cultural concept and a complex set of learned behaviors that is contingent not only on culture, but also on history. Gender roles and expectations are always in flux and vary from one society to another and one time to another. Thus, the qualities and behaviors expected of women by a particular society at a particular historical time is called femininity; masculinity is what is expected of men in a particular cultural and historical setting.

An organism's sex category reflects its biological reproductive function rather than its sexuality or other behavior. The female sex is defined as the one which produces the larger gamete (the egg) and which typically bears the offspring. In contrast, the male sex has a smaller gamete (sperm) and rarely bears offspring. In some animals, sex may be assigned to specific structures rather than the entire organism. Earthworms, for example, are normally hermaphrodites.

Alternately, "gender" may be defined to be the norm of social conduct, based on sex. That is, "sex" defines what is biologically present, whereas "gender" defines what society expects of persons of different sexes. The distinction is important: the law tends to forbid discrimination on the basis of both (effeminate men cannot be fired for not acting according to their "gender"), but matters in terms of more abstracted social and legal arguments.

Raccoon

2007-07-28T04:00:41Z

Kittysayshello:

Raccoons are medium-sized mammals with black masks and ringed tails. Their fur is gray, brown, or reddish black. The mixture of light and dark colors on their fur helps to camouflage, or blend into the forest or urban environment. Adult raccoons weigh 15-20 pounds. A raccoon’s tracks look like tiny human hand and footprints, but raccoons can’t oppose their thumbs like people can. Raccoons can, however, open garbage cans, jars, and latches. The raccoon’s scientific name, “lotor,” means “washer” because it seems to wash its food. However, the raccoon does not always dip its food in water. It may also eat the food even if it is still dirty. Scientists used to think that the raccoon didn’t have enough saliva to swallow its food. They thought the raccoon needed to wet its food to be able to swallow it. But now, we know that raccoons do have enough saliva. The new reason scientists think raccoons wash their food is to press it and squash it to make sure there are no sharp bones or dangerous bits in the food. The name, “raccoon,” may have come from the Algonquin Indian word “arukun,” which means “he who scratches with his hands.”

Habitat
The raccoon lives in almost all areas of the United States and in southern Canada and northern Mexico. Although it prefers to live in woods near a stream or marsh, the raccoon is a very adaptable animal. Instead of using a tree to sleep in, it can use a chimney or a ditch. Because many of the raccoon’s natural habitat areas are being destroyed, it moves in closer to man, using the same habitat, and even eating the same foods as people.

Food
In the wild, a raccoon is an omnivore, eating plants and animals. Its menu includes plants like berries, acorns, and grapes. It also eats animals including baby mice, baby birds & eggs, frogs, crayfish, fiddler crabs, fish, and even some snakes. Around people, the raccoon loves to eat the corn in our gardens, garbage, and even animals that have been killed by cars (roadkill). Basically, the raccoon can live almost anywhere and eat almost anything. It can walk, run, climb, and swim. It usually walks on all fours, but can stand up straight to see over tall stumps or grasses. Raccoons live seven to ten years.

Lifestyle
Raccoons are usually nocturnal, but in warm states, like Florida, they often come out during the day. If there is a lot of food nearby, raccoons don’t travel much and have a small territory. They choose several trees inside their home range that they like to sleep in, and use different trees on different nights. Raccoons usually live alone, and the father does not help the mother to raise the babies. Three to seven babies are born around February. When they are ten weeks old, the babies leave the den and follow their mother around learning to hunt. They stay near her until the fall, when they set out on their own. Raccoons do not hibernate, but they may eat extra food in the autumn to store energy.

Rabies
Raccoons can catch diseases like rabies and distemper which make them act very strangely. A healthy raccoon will hardly ever walk right up to a person (unless someone has been feeding it). If a raccoon does this, it may be sick, and a grown-up should be told. Often, the raccoons that get hit by cars are the sick ones (or maybe they were trying to eat other roadkills). People can catch rabies if they are bitten. If you get bitten, you must get shots to stop you from getting the disease. Shots may not feel good, but they’re definitely better than getting the disease and dying. The best thing to do is NEVER touch, feed, or go near a wild animal. You look very tall and dangerous to a wild animal. It may bite you because it is scared. If you stay away from the animal, it won’t be able to bite you!

Poetry

2007-07-28T04:00:23Z

Kittysayshello:

Poetry is the most compressed form of literature. It is composed of carefully chosen words expressing great depth of meaning. Poetry uses specific devices such as connotation, alliteration, and rhythm to express the appropriate combination of meaning and emotion.

There are two basic types of poetry:

* traditional - poetry that follows standard rules of grammar and syntax with a regular rhythm and rhyme scheme.

* modern - avoids rhyme and standard grammatical organization and seeks new ways of expression.

There are many poems written about the important parts of life,
and there are names for poems with these subjects:

* epithalamium - a poem that celebrates a wedding
* elegy - a poem that remembers the dead
* pastoral - a poem describing the joys or sorrows of living close to nature and away from the city
* love - a poem filled with expressions of joy, despair, passion, or unrequited love.

Edit conflict

2007-07-28T03:59:19Z

Kittysayshello:

An edit conflict occurs when two users try to edit the same wiki page at the same time. Whoever hits "Save page" first wins, but this is not always the best outcome. The other user needs to know how to recover from an edit conflict, so they don't lose their work.

For example:
* John clicks Edit on an article.
* Mary clicks Edit on the same article.
* John finishes editing, clicks Save page and the article now contains his version.
* Mary finishes editing, clicks Save page and is presented with the "Edit Conflict" page. This shows the current source of the page on top (in this case, John's version), followed by the new edits (in this case, Mary's version). This enables the editor to merge the changes manually.

A similar situation would have happened if Mary had saved her version of the page first, since when John clicked Save page his edits would then conflict with the current version of the page.

In practice, manual merging is not always necessary as the Conservapedia system is able to resolve many potential edit conflicts automatically, if the edits were made to different paragraphs or sections of a page. The edit conflict page normally only appears when two people were editing the same few lines and automatic merging cannot tell which words or lines to save.
