''1. World War II: when, where, who and why? Explain.''
World War II occurred in Africa, Europe, and Asia, in the time period 1938 to 1945. The countries involved were too numerous to count as this was a world war. World War II was essentially a continuation of World War I as they were mostly the same sides. Germany was coming back for revenge and was being stirred by the oratorical powers of Adolf Hitler.

''2. Compare and contrast communism and fascism, with at least two examples of how they are similar and two examples of how they differ.''

Communism and Fascism are similar as both forms of government usually have dictators and leave out god. But they are different in that fascism puts the country first and communism is allegedly about treating people equally.

''3. Why do you think Hitler and his supporters killed so many people? Explain.''
I believe he killed them because he needed a scapegoat to work people into a frenzy and to secure power against those who opposed him.

''4. Discuss the effect of communism spreading to China.''
When communism spread to China it was a big turning point for communism because China had the largest population of any country in the world. Now it is one of the biggest exporters of goods. So when communism took control of China it took control of one of the most powerful nations.

''5. Describe any aspect of the Cold War or the Korean War or the Spanish Civil War (with reference to Orwell, if you like).''
The Inchon landing was a very interesting and brilliant tactical maneuver. It is very interesting because although his advisors were vehemently opposed to the idea General Macarthur carried through with his plan and landed troops in the middle of the North Korean army which was invading the South Korean peninsula.. As half of the army continued down the South Korean peninsula Macarthur cut off communications to it and trapped the better half of the North Korean army. This signaled victory for the Americans and the South Koreans in this fight, but then the Chinese entered on the North Korean side.

''6. How did technological advances or insights help the Allied forces? Be specific.''
The discoveries in physics and cryptology helped the Allied forces break the German enigma and the study of physics helped many of the worlds greatest scientists make the atom bomb.

''7. Should the United States have entered World War II in Europe? Discuss.''
If the United States had not entered the war in Europe all of Europe would have fallen to Germany and Russia and even if the U.S. succeeded in Asia Europe still would have fallen to Germany and Russia. Germany and Russia would have quickly invaded Britain and soon all of Europe would have been under their control. At this point the spies in the Soviet Union would have sufficient knowledge about the atom bomb to make one, and perhaps the allies would never have broken the enigma, so if the U.S. had not entered the war in Europe Germany and Russia would have won.

This is because Genocide only became very wide spread in the Nineteenth to Twentieth centuries because there were more systematic and efficient ways of finding and killing people, plus mass communications played a role. Also the Holocaust contributed to the genocide death count, along with the genocide in Rwanda, in Armenia, Cambodia and elsewhere.

''H3. Was it right for Churchill not to warn a town about a German bombing if he knew the town would be bombed?''
Churchill had broken the enigma and the Germans did not know it. But had Churchill warned the village that there was going to be a bombing the Germans would have known that Churchill had cracked the code and all of the hard work put into cracking the code would be obsolete as the Germans would have just picked a new code, perhaps one that would have been harder to break. In the future our knowledge of the enigma helped save many lives in World War II, more lives than in the village.

''H6. Was General Macarthur right or wrong in the Korean War?''
General Macarthur was right in the stroke of genius of the Inchon landing, but he was wrong in his misjudgment of the temperament of President Truman. No matter how skilled a military commander you are you will always need to be politic and when Douglas Macarthur misjudged Truman and kept fighting in South Korea he was eventually fired for disobeying.

''1. What was the "Great War," and why was it called that? Who was on each side?''
The “Great War” was World War I and the reason it was called the “Great War” was because it was the most violent and bloody war to date.
On one side were Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire,and on the other side were Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and, in 1917 the United States.

''2. Who won World War I? Explain the outcome.''
Really nobody won World War I-- although there was a symbolic “victor” both sides suffered immense casualties, ranging from 10-16 million. The British and their allies invaded Germany, thus “winning” although sustaining heavy losses. But even if you count Britain as having won, they still did not handle the win the right way, severely mistreating Germany and taking large amounts of money and resources from Germany. And because Britian gave Germany such harsh treatment the Germans were quick to elect Adolph Hitler as president. So although Britain “won” they still, in an interesting way, caused World War II.

''3. Pick your favorite battle of the War and describe it.''
The First battle of Marne
This battle played a key part in the war because it stopped the German breakthrough to the sixth army. Also it had a huge impact on morale. The German first and second armies were almost completely destroyed bye the French and British as they flanked and encircled the enemy. Planes also played a big part in the battle employing a technique known as “Strafing”, flying low enough to shoot at enemy infantry. In the end the allied forces were able to stop the Germans despite heavy casualties on both sides.

The Communist Revolution occurred in Russia towards the end of World War I, in November 1917. It was led by Vladmir Lenin, and occurred because….

I think the most interesting theory is quantum mechanics. The basic premise of quantum mechanics is that the basic building block is essentially a wave, but when observing the wave it changes into a particle. This is very interesting because by observing something you can change it, even if you do not think you interfered.

''6. Describe a European colony in the 20th century, and what happened to it.'' The Indian colony was not granted independence until well after World War I, but was eventually granted independence because of the peaceful diplomatic efforts of Mahatma Gandhi.

''7. Current events question: Do you think our economic problems today are -- or are not -- similar to the Great Depression? Explain by including some history about the Great Depression.''
I believe that the economic problems today are not very similar to the Great Depression but were greatly exaggerated by the media in order to have Barack Obama elected, just as Franklin Delano Roosevelt was during the Great Depression. But this exaggeration caused the stock investors to lose confidence.

These ways involved throwing grenades into the packed trenches of the enemy, causing high casualties and wounds, and one of the most horrific, poison gas. Although this was an effective way of clearing out trenches it caused many casualties and was a painful way of death.
After the occupants of either trench got out, they were sitting ducks for enemy fire. So trench warfare basically pinned down each side, because if the side came out of the trench they died because of gas and grenades. But if they came out they died because of enemy fire.

Because of the religious wars and the prosecution of Puritans in England, the Puritans moved to America and founded colonies, and when the Puritans founded these new colonies in America this helped America to grow.
''3. The French Revolution: all bad, or was there something good about it?''
There were a few good things about the French revolution such as the end of absolute monarchy, and the limiting of the power of the nobles. But although these good things did happen it is still another case where the ends do not justify the means—guillotining people, for instance.
''4. Pick another revolution and describe it.''
The American Revolution was a revolution that took place before the French revolution. In fact, its success inspired the French to have their revolution. The American Revolution was when thirteen of the colonies of America rose up in anger against the British. The biggest effect that this victory had was that it showed the world that the British army juggernaut could be beaten.

''5. Why do you think it took the world so long before revolutions started occurring?''
Although the word “revolution” did not arise until the 1700s, that does not mean that there were not already revolutions. For instance, there was the German general Arminius and his revolt against the Roman Empire, or the Saxon revolt against Charlemagne. There were many revolutions before the 1700 hundreds.

I think that the way Napoleon ruled was very interesting. He bred dislike of foreigners and catered to many of the common people’s likes and dislikes, such as the return of another regime. He also gathered power with his support for French institutions such as the “Concordant of 1801” which confirmed the Catholic church as the major church of France. He catered to the people and supported only France and this is how he rose to great power in the empire.

The Louisiana Purchase was a win-win situation for both parties because it gave the Americans a lot of extra land and it also got the French money to fund their war.

2. Martin Luther: who was he, what did he do, and when did he do it?
Martin Luther was a German monk who found some discrepancies in the way that Pope Leo X was gathering funds for Saint Peter’s Basilica. Martin Luther tried to correct these discrepancies on Oct 31 1517, but was not as well trained in politics as he should have been to take on these problems. So Martin Luther found himself exiled and was declared an outlaw so he went undercover and while undercover translated the Bible from Greek to German. When he came out of hiding he utilized the Gutenberg printing press and printed his Bible. This gave rise to the new religion of Lutheranism.
3. What was the Baroque style, and what was its motivation?
The baroque style was a style of art, music, etc. that utilized vibrant colors and was very grand and bright or elaborate. The baroque art and music was encouraged by the Roman Catholic Church when there was a demand for a new style of art.

The English language originated in A.D. 450 when Germanic tribes settled in England. But the language developed there is known as “Old English” and is not spoken today. Old English was spoken up until the Norman invasion in 1066, and then a new brand of English known as Middle English was spoken. Modern English began after the middle ages.

The Tang Dynasty was a very important dynasty that greatly furthered China’s administrative and judicial system. Firstly, the Tang Dynasty helped the administrative system by forming a new one That replaced the administrative system that had arisen in the third to fourth century. The Tang Dynasty also created the first complete Chinese code of law, which still exists. The Tang dynasty also tried to distribute land equally to the peasants, giving the peasant families “Life Plots”.

The Renaissance occurred in Europe because Europe was the most artistically developed and was most ready for a renaissance. Also Europe benefited from many great artists that helped to bring the renaissance about.

I would describe Hillary Clinton as Machiavellian because no matter what happens she always manages to manipulate people and come out on top. Even though she lost the Presidential election she still manages to become Secretary of State and be in an extremely powerful position. This shows that Hillary is able to manipulate people until she gets what she wants, and I find that very Machiavellian.

The effect of the reformation was that it split the Catholic church and caused there to be many different Christian churches. It also and lessened power among Christians because Christians began to quarrel over many different problems that would not have arisen otherwise.

''H7. Dante's great work about Hell: something we should hear more about today? Your view, please.''
I think that Dante’s work on hell, the “Inferno” is a very important piece, because I do not think that many people acknowledge hell as a real issue in their lives, and they do not think about the consequences of their actions. Because of this I think that people are more likely to commit crimes and do wrong things. So I think that we should hear more about Dante’s “Inferno”.

1.What do you think was the main secret to Alexander the Greats enormous success?''
The main secret to Alexander the Great’s enormous success was his military might. The real reason that Alexander succeeded was because he inherited the amazing military that his father had built up, which included the phalangites, a Macedonian interpretation of the hoplite. Alexander also inherited an extremely large and well trained cavalry. Alexander’s father, Philip II, had built this military up and was on the eve of an invasion of Persia when he died. This was a very good opportunity for Alexander the Great, Philip’s son, who seized control of the military and merely carried out his father’s plans to conquer Persia. Although Alexander pushed forward, he died and did not consolidate, or rule.

''2. What about the Greek geography was unique and conducive to the development of democracy? Explain a bit.''
Greece was separated into a lot of small city states because of the natural terrain such as mountains and rivers. This made it so that the states were isolated and each could form its own form of government.

''3. Explain the big advance in language mentioned in the lecture, which might have been even more significant than the invention of the wheel.''
The Phoenicians developed a Phonetic alphabet based on sounds. This was much more usable than the already established languages and made it much easier to communicate, and easier to describe things.

''4. Pick a significant advance in knowledge by the Greeks and comment on it.''
The trireme was an extremely innovative battle ship that could ram an opponent and also was very versatile. It formed the core of the Greek navy and won the battle of salamis.

The Eagle and the Fox

AN EAGLE and a Fox formed an intimate friendship and decided to live near each other. The Eagle built her nest in the branches of a tall tree, while the Fox crept into the undergrowth and there
produced her young. Not long after they had agreed upon this plan, the Eagle, being in want of provision for her young ones, swooped down while the Fox was out, seized upon one of the little
cubs, and feasted herself and her brood.
The Fox on her return, discovered what had happened, but was less grieved for the death
of her young than for her inability to avenge them. A just retribution, however, quickly fell upon the Eagle. While hovering near an altar, on which some villagers were sacrificing a goat, she suddenly seized a piece of the flesh, and carried it,
along with a burning cinder, to her nest. A strong breeze soon fanned the spark into a flame, and the eaglets, as yet unfledged and helpless, were roasted in their nest and dropped down dead at
the bottom of the tree. There, in the sight of the Eagle, the Fox gobbled them up.

I think that this is one of the most interesting of Aesop’s fables. The moral to this story is “do unto others as you should have others do unto you”, which is one of the ten commandments. Another point of interest is how shallow friendships are in Aesop’s fables. It says that the eagle and the fox had formed an intimate friendship, yet at the first chance it gets the eagle kills the fox kits.

''6. Socrates, Plato and Aristotle: who impresses you most, and why?''
Socrates impresses me most because he was the first philosopher, preceding Plato and Aristotle, and he also trained Plato, who trained Aristotle. I like his ideas, and the fact that he also didn’t just give in to Athens. Also, if Socrates had decided not to train Plato, there would be no Aristotle.

''7. Pick an ancient people other than the Greeks and briefly describe them.''
The Egyptians were a fascinating civilization. They had amazing architecture and built the great pyramids without the wheel-- one would need true skill to do that. Also, Egypt has survived over 3000 years, despite being conquered many times. They also developed the irrigation technique and transformed farming in ancient times.

''H1. Do you think Jesus taught in Greek? Explain.''
No I do not think that Jesus taught in Greek because Jesus grew up in Galilee and spoke Aramaic. He also was teaching peasants in poor towns and many peasants wouldn’t know Greek. His disciples may have taught in Greek but I doubt that Jesus did.
''H2. The Persian Wars. What can you say about them?''
I think that it is a wonderful story and a comeback victory by the Greeks. In the Battle of Marathon the Athenian Greeks could not get Sparta’s help and had to fend off 100,000 Persians by themselves. In the battle of Thermopylae only 300 Spartans and an assortment of 1200 or more other troops fended off 300,000 Persians for a short while and then although Persia invaded and ransacked Athens most of the citizens fled to an island. There the deciding battle of the Persian wars was fought, but Greece beat the Persians due to Greek triremes and their training and versatility. The reason that Persia lost was not due to numbers since at the Battle of Salamis the Persian ships outnumbered the Greek ships 4 to 1 yet because the Greek generals studied the river and figured out that the Persian navy would not be able to maneuver due to their big ships and their superior numbers. And thus the Greeks won

''H3. Greek mathematics, philosophy, drama, literature and architecture. Which do you like best, and why?'' I would have to pick literature because it includes Greek mythology which is full of very interesting stories, and Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, plus the history of Herodotus.

''1. Who is your favorite Roman emperor, and why?''
My favorite Emperor was Constantine I, the first Christian Emperor of Rome (ruled 306 to 337AD). His conversion was a big turning point for Christianity because because he not only reversed the persecutions of his predecessor, Diocletian, but issued the Edict of Milan, which allowed Christianity to spread throughout the Roman Empire. Constantine also made other big changes to the Roman Empire. He established Byzantium as the new imperial residence “Constantinople”, and also fortified many cities in the Empire, and suppressed many civil wars.

''2. Describe what the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire were, including approximate dates.'' The Roman Republic was when the senate had more power and there was no emperor. But the Roman Empire was started after the assassination of Caesar (in 44 B.C). and the civil war, when Octavian made a deal with the senate that made Octavian an emperor, and started the Roman Empire.

''3. Compare and contrast the Roman Empire in the West with the Byzantine Empire.''
First of all the Byzantine Empire was more powerful. It also managed to last much longer than the Western Roman Empire, for almost another millennium. They were both sacked by Attila but the western was eventually destroyed while the Byzantine Empire first paid him tribute, and then hired his soldiers as mercenaries after Attila’s death. Byzantium was also still the birthplace of many powerful rulers and generals, General Aetius, known as, “The last True Roman” was one of the many people that rose out of the Byzantine empire, whereas the western empire was in decline and depended on the Eastern Empire to help salvage any power.
4''. Comment on the significance of the Roman language, Latin. ''
Latin was a very important language and was, in some ways, the most advanced language yet. Also, it was easier to learn than Greek, and the speaker can express concepts more efficiently with Latin. When the Romans invaded other lands they brought Latin with them, and as a result of that Latin became more widespread and this is also why so many languages in Europe have Latin roots.

''5. Explain what Pax Romana was.''
Pax romana 27 B.C.-180 A.D. was a time period of growth and peace for the Roman Empire; its name means “time of peace” in Latin. It was a time of economic, military, and intellectual growth. Many new plays were written and many aqueducts were built, the Aeneid was written. It was also a time of peace, which gave the Roman military time to increase their power. It was a time of unity, since there were no major civil wars, and all of Rome was united under one set of laws.

''6. Current events question: What about the decline of the Roman Empire reminds you of the United States today? (Possibilities could be: in-fighting for government positions like the Illinois Senate seat, moral decay, economic decline, weakness to attack by foreign enemies, etc.)'' I think that what most reminds me of ancient Rome is the fighting insurgents in other countries. Although the Romans conquered Germany, they had to continue to fight the insurgent Germans, and we continue to have to fight the Iraqis. The situation is very similar.
Also, as America has achieved preeminence in the world, Americans have gotten used to an easy life with little self denial. This parallels what happened in Rome.

''7. Challenging question''
There should be an entire course taught about how Christianity overcame the anti-Christian Roman empire.
I think there should be a course taught about it because it was a very important time period for Christianity and it illustrates great heroism and martyrdom. Also, it illustrates the struggle of a religion and its success, and should be taught because this knowledge, in my opinion, is good for any future theologian. Even if you are not a future theologian it is still a very interesting and important part of world history.

''H''''2. Which was more influential, the Roman law or the Roman legions?'' I think that the Roman legions were more influential because the Roman law would not have been as widespread if it were not for the power of the legions. Also, the legions made and broke many countries and kingdoms, such as Carthage, Britain, and Gaul, and what they did not conquer they changed for hundreds of years.

''H4. Julius Caesar: a hero or a villain?'' It depends on your perspective, plus we only have the accounts of historians and Shakespeare, and Caesar’s “Gallic Wars”. I am sure that if I were a senator and I saw Caesar deliberately breaking the law I would be outraged and I would be afraid that he was breaking the law. Also although Caesar did win a lot of battles, we have to ask ourselves, is that why he is called a hero? And if that is the reason he is called a hero. We should ask ourselves, was it his strategic and tactical prowess that won those battles? Or the Roman military? If we answer the second for that question then we see that what Caesar did was to deliberately disobey senate rule and break the law, and then try to claim rule of Rome for himself.

''H6. Attila the Hun: discuss this remarkable person.'' Attila the Hun was an extremely amazing military general. Whereas other Hun leaders were satisfied with the tribute that Rome gave them, Attila was not, and kept asking for more, until the Romans could not give anymore, whereupon Attila invaded Rome. He ransacked Rome and only one general could really stand up to him (General Aetius). And he was killed by the hordes of Hun cavalry men. Attila was very big on discipline; he ordered all Hun children to have their cheeks slashed open when they were young, to boost endurance. His cavalry men were also well trained. They could go for days on horseback; the horsemen would drink the blood of their horses out of the horse’s neck when the Huns were riding to war. Attila kept conquering and would not stop. He was never satisfied no matter how much gold the Romans gave him. The only reason that Attila did not destroy Rome was because the Pope talked to him. No one knows what he said, but it persuaded Attila.

I liked classical China because their history interests me more, and also the classical Chinese had many great inventions. The Chinese mythology is interesting.
''2. What advantage did Buddhism have over Hinduism in converting people outside of India?''
For one thing, Hindus believed in the caste system, and when you are a peasant it is hard to accept that it is your fault that you have to rake manure for a living. Also, Buddhism had the help of the Silk Road.

''3. Explain what this is:''
This is a yin and yang symbol. It symbolizes the struggle, or harmony, between masculinity and femininity.
''4. What aspect or aspects of Hinduism have enabled it to survive for so long?''
Their ability to mix their religion with other religions, to adapt and accept other religions, has enabled the Hindus’ religion to survive for millennia. For instance, although some Hindus accept that there was a Christ, they still believe that there were multiple gods.
I also think that the Caste System influenced the society and politics of the country so that it would be harder to break away from Hinduism. 

''5. Describe and explain one or more of your favorite insights by Sun Tzu.''
“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.”
By this, Sun Tzu means that you cannot go to war without stategy, which is your overlying plan for the war, yet you cannot go to war without tactics, which is your plan for the individual battle. So if you have a very good plan for a battle but then you have a very bad plan of where to invade and when to invade you will lose the war. 

It is always hard to know a trend except in hindsight. But I believe the most important one was Manifest Destiny. manifest Destiny was the idea that God wanted the Americans to explore and control the land from the Pacific to the Atlantic, this idea started many things, the Louisiana Purchase, the Mexican war and so on,but it also led the Americans to gain much more land. because it really guided America to what it is today and America would not have been as secure or as militarily powerful as it is today if it weren’t for Manifest Destiny.

The most important threat to America, I think is the hard economic times and the setback of another great depression, but also the conflict in the Middle East where it seems to be somewhat akin to the Vietnam War with the loss of life and there being no clear winner.

I believe that the more Christian nations have a greater chance of success, for instance the United States in the beginning was very Christian and has stayed that way and it is also a very successful nation. I should have prepared by spending more time studying the dates of important events, and the thing I can improve on most would be increasing my knowledge about the presidents.

Darwinism was an issue in both the Scopes Trial and the Bell v. Buck case. The Scopes trial involved teaching of evolution, and the Bell v. Buck case involved Social Darwinism. I think that the Bell v. Buck was a very interesting case, and it showed that even the highest court in the U.S can be unjust.
''4. Do you think the United States should have entered World War I, and why? ''
I believe that the U.S should have entered the World War, because the Germans had publicly shown aggression and had tried to have the U.S invaded by using the Mexicans. Also the War would have taken many more years if the U.S had not entered it and many more people might have died.

I believe that Teddy Roosevelt was most comparable to John McCain. Both Teddy and McCain were war heroes, and both of them were also “Mavericks”. I like the fact that Roosevelt tried to treat everybody equally, as in the Square Deal, and I also think that he was very good at keeping peace.

The eighteenth amendment prohibited selling, buying, or brewing of alcohol. I think that this is a little harsh. I also believe that if alcohol were bad, Jesus would not have turned water into wine.

The cartoon portrays President Theodore Roosevelt as an angel, holding apart two men who are attempting to fight. The two men represent Japan and Russia, and the cartoon represents the peacekeeping attempts by Theodore Roosevelt in the Russo-Japanese war.

I think that trench warfare, first introduced during WW1 was one of the most horrific and bloody tactics used in that war. It would pit one army against another in a virtual stalemate with many dieing on each side until one finally managed to annihilate the other. The methods used to clear out trenches included mustard gas, which would often kill slowly and painfully.
''H2. What is your view of the limitations on free speech during World War I?''
I think that the limitations on free speech were very harsh, and infringed on the rights of the individual. In Debs v. U.S., anti–war speaker Eugene Debs was arrested for merely speaking out against the war. Such restrictions on free speech seem to violate the First Amendment.
''H4. Please provide your analysis of the midterm exam, in any way. Were the questions challenging? Did it cover the periods and subject matter appropriately? Did you learn from it overall?''
I thought that the midterm was very interesting, although I did not feel that it covered sufficiently the period 1492-1776. In addition, leading up to the midterm, it was said that the midterm would ask a question about the Newburgh Conspiracy, but I could not find one. Other than that I felt that the Test gave an extensive coverage of everything. I learned from the test.

1. In your opinion, the 2008 election that concluded on Tuesday is most similar to which election in history, and why? ''
I that this election is most like the election between Senator John Quincy Adams and Senator Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson was a war hero, like McCain, plus there is the endorsement of Barrack Obama by Colin Powell. Many said that President-elect Obama would give Powell a high position in the government. This would be akin to the “Corrupt Bargain”, when Senator Henry Clay widely endorsed John Quincy Adams, and after Adams was elected, he gave Clay the Secretary Of State position.
''2. Imperialism: a good or bad thing?''
I believe that in some cases imperialism can be good, but as with all things, too much of it is never good. I think that a bigger country exerting influence over a smaller country can sometimes be good, as the two countries can trade, and exchange valuable knowledge and technology, but then it can be taken to the extreme, as in the infamous Opium Wars, where the British forced the Chinese to buy the highly addictive drug opium.
''3. Your thoughts on the progressive movement, please.''
I think that the goals of the progressive movement are almost all very good. I don’t see a way that anybody could disagree with them. The progressive movement’s goals also remind me of the goals of the U.N., which seeks world peace and civil rights, and to improve working conditions.
''4. Please explain the cartoon in the Minnesota Tribune, having the caption at top, "WHAT WILL HE DO!" and the caption at the bottom, "The eyes of the world are upon him." Include your description of the point of view of the cartoonist.''
This cartoon features a man, (probably McKinley,) holding a Cuban or a Spanish man by the scruff of his neck, I think that the cartoon is saying that McKinley is on the edge of a war against the Spanish, and that the entire world is watching to see when the war will start. I believe that the cartoonist is probably against the war, and the cartoonist portrays McKinley as a bit of a gruff old man, but portrays the Cuban/Spanish man as a harmless, undefended man that McKinley is harming.

''H1. Do you agree with how the United States finally ended the fighting in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War?''
I do agree, because not only did the United States grant Cuba independence, but the U.S. also put a military base in Cuba to help stem further uprising. And we signed the Treaty of Paris, giving the U.S even more land, and they ended the war in a way that would eventually make Spain our ally.
''H2. How do you think the role of newspapers in the recent election compares with the "yellow journalism" of the 1890s?''
I believe that the role of the newspapers in the recent election is very similar to Yellow Journalism, for instance, when Barack Obama called McCain’s economic policies a “pig in lipstick”, the next day all the tabloids and a lot of the newspapers had headlines like “Obama calls McCain/ Palin Pig”! which caught my eye, and even though it wasn’t the truth, I had already picked up the newspaper and seen that Jeter was batting 333, so I wanted to read the sports section and then I saw that the new Batman was coming out. And so on, so even though the newspapers were not publishing the truth, they were still catching the public’s eye.
On the other hand, newspapers were not so influential in this election because television, radio and the internet played a larger role.

''1. In your opinion, the 2008 election that concluded on Tuesday is most similar to which election in history, and why? ''
I that this election is most like the election between Senator John Quincy Adams and Senator Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson was a war hero, like McCain, plus there is the endorsement of Barrack Obama by Colin Powell. Many said that President-elect Obama would give Powell a high position in the government. This would be akin to the “Corrupt Bargain”, when Senator Henry Clay widely endorsed John Quincy Adams, and after Adams was elected, he gave Clay the Secretary Of State position.
''2. Imperialism: a good or bad thing?''
I believe that in some cases imperialism can be good, but as with all things, too much of it is never good. I think that a bigger country exerting influence over a smaller country can sometimes be good, as the two countries can trade, and exchange valuable knowledge and technology, but then it can be taken to the extreme, as in the infamous Opium Wars, where the British forced the Chinese to buy the highly addictive drug opium.
''3. Your thoughts on the progressive movement, please.''
I think that the goals of the progressive movement are almost all very good. I don’t see a way that anybody could disagree with them. The progressive movement’s goals also remind me of the goals of the U.N., which seeks world peace and civil rights, and to improve working conditions.
''4. Please explain the cartoon in the Minnesota Tribune, having the caption at top, "WHAT WILL HE DO!" and the caption at the bottom, "The eyes of the world are upon him." Include your description of the point of view of the cartoonist.''
This cartoon features a man, (probably McKinley,) holding a Cuban or a Spanish man by the scruff of his neck, I think that the cartoon is saying that McKinley is on the edge of a war against the Spanish, and that the entire world is watching to see when the war will start. I believe that the cartoonist is probably against the war, and the cartoonist portrays McKinley as a bit of a gruff old man, but portrays the Cuban/Spanish man as a harmless, undefended man that McKinley is harming.

Honors (pick 2 out of 3)
''H1. Do you agree with how the United States finally ended the fighting in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War?''
I do agree, because not only did the United States grant Cuba independence, but the U.S. also put a military base in Cuba to help stem further uprising. And we signed the Treaty of Paris, giving the U.S even more land, and they ended the war in a way that would eventually make Spain our ally.
''H2. How do you think the role of newspapers in the recent election compares with the "yellow journalism" of the 1890s?''
I believe that the role of the newspapers in the recent election is very similar to Yellow Journalism, for instance, when Barack Obama called McCain’s economic policies a “pig in lipstick”, the next day all the tabloids and a lot of the newspapers had headlines like “Obama calls McCain/ Palin a Pig”! which caught my eye, and even though it wasn’t the truth, I had already picked up the newspaper and seen that Jeter was batting 333, so I wanted to read the sports section and then I saw that the new Batman movie was coming out. And so on, so even though the newspapers were not publishing the truth, they were still catching the public’s eye.
On the other hand, newspapers were not so influential in this election because television, radio and the internet played a larger role.

Even though many textbooks say that his goal was to end slavery, Lincoln said his actual purpose was to save the union, and that ending slavery was a bonus.

''2. Explain the purposes of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution.''
The purpose of the Thirteenth Amendment was to abolish slavery, the Fourteenth Amendment gives all slaves equal rights, and the Fifteenth Amendment gives all races the right to vote.

''3. Who was your favorite military figure from the Civil War, and why?''
My favorite figure from the Civil War was Stonewall Jackson because he was an extremely good tactician and a great general, possibly the greatest general the United States has ever had.

''4. How would you have handled Reconstruction differently?''
The only way I would have handled the reconstruction differently would be to greatly uphold the Fourteenth Amendment which Andrew Johnson did not. I also would not have so openly controlled the South. I would have put figurehead leaders up but actually I would be pulling the strings from behind the scenes.

''5. Abraham Lincoln was home schooled. Do you see any characteristics in him that might have reflected his home schooling, such as his independent thinking? ''
I think that many characteristics carried over, such as his thirst for knowledge, and also his honesty, which earned him the nickname honest Abe.

''6. Please interpret the cartoon about the dream to the right. Its title is "Abraham's dream!--'Coming events cast their shadows before.'" Lincoln is fleeing to left while wearing a Scotsman's plaid cap and a cape. He declares, "This don't remind me of any joke!!"''

Columbia stands at the door of the White House with the severed head of a black man and is kicking Lincoln out of the White House. Lincoln is wearing a plaid Scottish cap, the same hat he wore on the train ride to Washington.

''7. Please interpret the cartoon with Columbia below. The caption is, "The Chinese Question." Columbia says, "Hands off, gentlemen. America means fair play for all men."''
This cartoon represents the issue of the Chinese immigrants coming in and taking jobs away from union workers. The cartoon shows a mob (presumably union workers) searching for the Chinese man, and it shows Columbia (America) protecting him.

Honors Questions
These questions require answers that are a bit longer than the answers above. Answer three out of the following questions (in addition to the questions above):

I prefer deflation because when the price is lower I can buy more things for the money I spend. The gold standard would encourage deflation, because the amount of money you print has to be tied to the amount of gold you have, and since there is a limited supply of gold the amount of money around would lessen thus causing there to be lower prices, and deflation. The American government acted on this principle following the Civil War, putting the dollar on the gold standard in order to prevent rampant inflation.

''H4. Andrew Johnson: misunderstood or incompetent?''
He was both. He was misunderstood and slandered when the Republicans spread a rumor that he was drunk, but also he was a little incompetent in not knowing how to deal with the Republicans and in being such a dull speaker.

''H5. Your view of Abraham Lincoln, please.''
I think that Abraham Lincoln was an honest man of goodwill who was strong and never gave up. Wen he started the Civil War he came with a goal and that goal was to restore the Union and that is precisely what he did. He also was a great at thinking on his feet as when he wrote the Gettysburg address on the train to Gettysburg.

Some fighting broke out and Polk went to Congress and told them that the Mexicans had fired on the Americans, so Congress declared war. The Mexican War ended when the Mexicans and the Americans signed the Treaty of Hidalgo which stipulated that the Texas- Mexican border would be at the Rio Grande River and also gave the U.S. more than half of Mexico.

In the times progressing up to the Civil War, Kansas was the battleground for anti-slavery fanatics and pro-slavery fanatics. There were many instances in which blood was shed, including when the pro-slavery mobs burned down the “free state hotel” and destroyed the offices of the anti-slavery newspapers.
Since there were many instances in which blood was shed, the state earned the nickname “bleeding Kansas.”
''6. Explain the cartoon, and what you think the cartoonist's view was. The woman's quote begins, "You have been a bad boy, Steve, ever since you had anything to do with that Nebraska Bill ...." ''
The cartoon has a lady “Columbia,” a representation of America, giving a smaller man, Stephen Douglas, a spanking. I believe that Columbia is referring to the suggestion by Stephen Douglas to give the Nebraska territory the choice of whether to have slaves or not. I think that the cartoonist was anti-slave and did not like Stephen Douglas as he presents him as an unruly child.

'' 7. Do you think it was possible to avoid the Civil War? Explain.''
No, I do not think it would have been possible to avoid the Civil War. The conflict on slaves would have just escalated as would the tariff prices. There wasn’t anyway to avoid the Civil War, only a way to prolong it.
