2) Marginal revenue is the extra revenue generated by selling one additional unit of a good or service. If your total revenue in maximized, than marginal revenue has to be zero, because no more profit can be generated by selling additional units.

3) Question #35 is my favorite of those I answered incorrectly, because I never thought about the possibility of describing faith, an unseen feeling, on a graph, something that can be seen and touched.

4) An example of a positive externality would be someone buying a computer with the knowledge that 10% of that purchase would go towards a cure for a disease. A negative externality includes time wasted in the future by not buying an efficient product.

5) Private firms in the free market will not provide public goods simply because they will lost a tremendous amount of profit… Private firms rely charging every individual to make a profit, and if that was no longer the case, most firms would go out of business.

4) Monopolies can be started by an individual (s) devoting their life to work and reaping the benefits from that work. Another, less noble way is through government intervention. When a government becomes too big and powerful, the people in control tend to press their own agendas with little resistance from the public; if that agenda includes creating a monopoly ( eg. The Postal Service ), then there is not much anyone can do about it.

5) The free market prevents monopolies from increasing prices without limitation. Actually the government helps with that as well. Laws may be introduced to break up the monopoly or limit their control of a particular industry to a certain percent.

2) In the end the only way to be truly motivated is to be in competition with yourself. As far as sports go, I could care less what other people are doing to make themselves better, because in a sense I am not competing against them, rather myself. Worrying or concerning yourself with other’s progress proves only to be futile in the long run. Wasting your time watching others practice and improve is merely lost time for bettering yourself.

7) NO there is not. Homeschoolers have a huge advantage because their parents are their teachers, and parents care far more for you than any teacher at public school would. Also, you can cater to the individual rather than the masses. In public school, everyone is forced to follow the same time schedule and take the same classes. What if you don’t want to do art? If you are in public school, then you fail. If you are home schooled, then you do something that you want to do that betters YOUR education. Similarly, homeschoolers do 33% better on average than public schooled children.

3) A short term cost for any company would be the initial start up cost to build facilities. Long term costs would include heating and lighting the building, and in the instance of a grocery store, stocking the shelves with food.

5) This can be explained in terms of long and short term costs by saying the person that does not go to college generally makes more initially than the person who is studying all day long. However, as time goes on, and the more educated person graduates college, that person is more likely to get a higher paying job than the person who is still working for 10$ per hour. So the short term cost for the college graduate is not making money right out of high school, while the long term cost for the individual who started working right out of high school and never got a college degree will be less increases in salary over the course of his working career.

2.) Your consumer surplus would be 1,000$ dollars. This means that you have 1,000$ extra dollars to spend or save. It is as if you made 1,000$ dollars more because you planned to spend 10k on the car but it only cost 9k.

3.) If I hike for four hours my total utility is 19 units. After that I do not receive any extra utility from hiking. With reading, however, I generate 15 units of utility after five hours, and after no more utility comes out of reading. If I have five extra hours today, I should spend three hours hiking and two hours reading a book as to generate my maximum utility from my activities.

4.) Obviously you should talk the dealer down to the market value for that used car and not base your decision on how much you would pay for it rather how much everyone else would pay for it. In a free market no one cares what one person wants, and the car salesperson knows that.

5.) y = mx + b where m = slope and b = y intercept. If you graph two functions side by side both with a slope of m = -1, but with different y intercepts, it does not matter what your input value for x is because both equations are parallel and their corresponding y values will be proportional, because both lines have the same slope. We then substitute Q=12 in for Q in either of the original equations. Again simplifying, our answer come out to P= 18. Reinserting units our final answer is P= 18$, while Q=12.

3.) When the supply of a good or service increases, the market price drops due to increased competition. Conversely, when the demand for a good or service increases, prices increase because the market can sustain by selling goods at such inflated prices. Usually, a demand for a good is the first step in this process, followed by the increase in prices. This is followed by many new businesses springing up in that particular industry, which leads to competition among businesses, which naturally causes the price to drop, assuming this is a free market. In management we would call a successful industry that is growing quickly a rising star, and an industry that is growing slowly but is very profitable a cash cow. Once you obtain a cash cow, the thinking is to invest in a rising star, as to make your business more profitable in the future.

4.) What the supply and demand curve does not take into account is time. We know that the fruit will only stay ripe for so long; therefore our window to sell the fruit is limited. Now, because we have a surplus of ripened fruit, and we know generally how much fruit we can sell at a given price in a given amount of time, we know that if we do not lower the price, we will waste product. So rather than being stubborn and not lowering the price, it makes far more sense to cut your losses and reduce the price of the goods so a greater quantity can be sold, even if it means lowering the price.

5.) A. The Yankees built 600 “obstructed view” bleacher seats, because that is where the supply and demand price intersect. The Yankees make 3000$ per game from these seats, which is not much, but the amount that they make from the luxury boxes that obstruct these seats far outweighs the money lost for those 600 seats.

B. If the City of New York passed a law limiting the price of “obstructed view” tickets to 2$, we can see from the supply and demand statistics that they would be sold out extremely quickly, which would cause a shortage and lead to a long waiting line. I strongly feel that government should have no say in what you charge for your private business, that would be like saying you cannot charge anymore than 2$ for a carwash, or something similar to that. However, if the Yankees for whatever reason felt compelled to do this on their own, then more power to them.
6.) The free market is much more powerful than the wealthiest people in the world because the opinion of one is nothing compared to the opinion of many. Similarly, Michael Phelps, the greatest swimmer of all time, is no match to the free moving ocean. No matter which direction he feels like swimming in, if the ocean chooses to drag him a particular way, he will be far outmatched and his individual strength will be meaningless.

7.) Don’t even get me started on health care and these fools that think socialized medicine is a good idea. What 99.99% of these idiots don’t understand is that regardless of how low the price seems, it still costs just as much… sure it may cost 200$ to get a basic MRI in a country like Canada or England, opposed to the 800$ it will cost in the United States, but #1 you will have to wait 10x longer to get it done, and #2 that extra 600$ that you think you are saving is just paid for by taxes. So naturally waiting lists develop because everyone thinks it is so inexpensive to get treatment, when it is really not cheaper at all, perhaps even more expensive than in a free market! What people also fail to mention is this: you cannot put a price on human life. It is really sick if you think about these socialist countries and their medical philosophies. They are not worried about the care that their patients receive, rather they are trying to be more cost efficient, which is something that you do not generally do when human life is at stake.

3.) It started off as a legitimate rebellion, but as with many uprisings, once someone has too much power and a lot of spare time, they create havoc.

H1} Well in theory the government is supposed to be at the service of the people. That would lead us to believe that art drives politics, because the people feel a certain way, they throw paint at a canvas, and the government is supposed to obey that.

1) The Renaissance occurred in the 15th century in Europe.

2.) Martin Luther was a preacher, who broke away from the established church. He is best known for nailing the 95 Theses or issues to the door of his Wittenberg Church.

3.) Baroque was a “backwards” way of painting that originated in the 17th century, in Italy.

H4) All Christians agree on the majority of issues. The media tries to expand on what little we do not agree about… They will bring up gay marriage, which is a controversial issue that not all Christians agree. They try to pull us apart from within, a prime example, not gay marriage, was Terry Shiavo, who was pronounced brain dead. Christians did not believe that she should have been taken off life support, however the media made it sound as their was some argument going on inside the church.

H6) Chivalry is a great quality to have. Most women greatly appreciate chivalry, but there is that select group of women that believe that chivalry towards them is a sign that they are week, which is completely false. Respect towards women is undervalued in today’s society. Chivalry is something that we should infuse back into our culture.

1) Hadrian was my favorite because based on his work, building walls, he saw that even the most powerful country in the world, Rome, could be attacked. The mere act of Hadrian building walls showed wisdom was more prevalent in him than pride.

2) Hannibal’s efforts in the Punic Wars was truly remarkable. Not only was it a feat to cross such a vast distance on foot and elephant, the fact that they did this through the cold and desolate mountains just added to the prestige. Remember, Carthage is build on the warm coasts of Africa. These soldiers most likely had no prior experience with cold weather, let alone snow. This also goes to show the level of trust Hannibal’s men had in him, or else they would have thrown their lives into such a treacherous situation.

3.) The Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire were far different in that the Romans had a succinct, efficient form of government and law, while the Byzantines were a more “run and gun” type society. They were both wonderfully successful empires, however the Romans surpassed all.

4.) If someone writes or speaks 50 words in one language, Egyptian, to describe two words in Latin, who do you think will be more successful. All things being equal, the empire who can cut communication times will be far greater in the long run. The Romans, who were schooled in Latin, communicated significantly faster than their adversaries. In battle, by the time someone says “ look there he is over the hill he is coming our way, watch out!,” the Romans would have been like “bang bang,” and the whole Roman legion would know what to do. A compact language is a practical one, and anything that is practical will result in success.

5) “Pax Romana” was a term the Romans used to describe the pinnacle of Roman power. This term was used when the Romans were at the peak of their power.

6) As scary as it is, the United States is declining, and unfortunately people do not seem to understand the cause of the problem. Yes the people serve the government rather than the other way around, yes America has become socialist, and yes the dollar is losing value. But these issues are not the root, they are only the function of the real problem, peoples’ morals. America turned with their eyes closed to Barack Obama, and they said “ here fix the problem.” Well guess what, he cannot fix the problem. No one can. The slow execution of Christian values in public settings, the lack of patriotism, and most of all, the denial of God are the real causes of our country’s epidemic. The cure is so obvious no one even wants to try it… if our country returns to its fundamental beliefs, our Christian beliefs, that were woven by our forefathers into every document they ever made, into every statue they ever built, or every building they ever raised, our country will immediately begin to recuperate, but, just like Rome, people were more concerned about themselves than country, and they watched as their nation crumbled. But Rome did not fall in a day, it took decades, as will our decline. Fortunately for us though we have some reference point to look at if we really want to. The Romans did not have 2000 years of documented history to take from like we do. We can still fix our problem. But Rome did not fall because it lacked Christianity. It fell because it found Christianity. When Rome became Christian, the people saw no reason for conquest. America has lost God, and until we find Him, were pretty much ruined.

7a) If the ultimate goal in our lives here is to achieve salvation, as the Bible says, then everything that happens in this world is either working for or against that cause. There can only be one absolute truth, it is foolish to believe that all religions are true. There is only one north star, it is absolute. Everything useful that ever happens is either to promote Christianity, or to dissuade people from it. We would be naive to say that there is no devil. People never talk about these things because it makes them uncomfortable… if something makes you feel uneasy, usually it is something you want to bring some kind of closure to. So yes the devil does put obstacles up to cause people to stray from the one absolute truth, Christianity.

H2) The Roman Law no doubt, because they controlled the legion. Countries whose military governs the law always fail, so even though the Law had no physical power, it gave commands and instructed those who had physical power on how to live go about their lives.

H3) All Roman citizens, including the apostle Paul, had a right to a trial in Rome. So when Paul was accused with a crime, he basically said “ bring me to Rome to be tried,” like my people are not going to convict me even if I had done something wrong. Jesus though was actually shafted by Roman Law. When Pilot condemned Jesus to death by letting the Jews decide what to do with him, Pilot let the law fall to appease another group of people. The real question is did Pilot do anything wrong? … I mean Jesus implied prior to his meeting with Pilot that he was going to be killed, so someone had to do it, why not Pilot? My point is that did Pilot actually have a choice, because God already knew what he was going to do, which was something that had to be done.

H5) Attila the Hun was a ruthless killer who did what was needed to be done in order to succeed in battle. He conquered most of the world, and he would have decimated the Romans even in their prime. Ironically Attila died from drowning in his own blood, maybe he had hemophilia, who knows. Either way his military genius was overrun by his foolishness, as happens with a good amount of leaders. He killed himself by refusing to fix the smallest of problems, a nose bleed. �

World History Week 3 assignment

1) If I was forced to choose I would pick ancient China, the reason being they simply have more detailed records of their existence, and their way of lifestyle, plus all the fighting that took place with the Mongols and what not, really solidify ancient China as one of the most fascinating cultures in the history of the world.

2.) Buddhism is more universal then any religion in that it teaches of no afterlife. All it talks about is inner peace, so if you think about it, you could be a Buddhist and another religion, sort of, at the same time.

3.) This is the Yin-Yang. The yin-Yang represents clashes between opposing forces. The two contrasting spots on both halves represent that there is a little bit of one thing in the other, eg. Good and evil.

4.) Hinduism is comparable to silly putty, in that it molds or adapts to its surroundings. Hinduism is almost like the shadow you cannot step on. No matter what you do to it, it always comes back on top. Hinduism virtually encompasses every religion; the religion molds to fit the environment. It is basically a small portion of every religion. It will never completely die because as long as there is at least one other religion to draw from, Hinduism will remain standing.

5.) “If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles.” This is my favorite because its practical view is, if you know what you can do, and your opponent can do, then there is no need for you to “lose.” Staying within your own boundaries is key to anything in life.

H4) China’s greatest contribution to the world was gunpowder. First used in rockets, they soon realized that this magnificent substance had a unusually high burn rate, which made it useful to launch projectiles. Original black powder is much more susceptible to heat, as well as it burns unevenly. Bombs work much better for black powder because the concern of efficiently is not as great. Say the Chinese had modern day smokeless powder back then, they would have conquered the world.

7.) I guess because you can “travel” on both and you can exchange information, but not really. That is kind of like saying a street is like the internet. Yes they both can carry information if that is what you want to call it, but then you could make a far fetched comparison to just about anything, like a person is a “work horse.” Yes they both do work, but a person and a horse are not the same, like a road and the internet are not the same.

H2) Confucianism is not a religion. It is more a rule system that pertains to being a good person rather than belief in a specific after life and a specific God.

H?) This is not in the lecture, but it pertains to Jesus. I wonder why God had Jesus die at such a young age. I mean obviously it was perfect timing for reasons we do not know, but don’t you think Jesus could have converted more people had he lived a bit longer?

H3) At the current pace, Islam will rank as the world’s leading religion in 100 years. Everything else will be the same, except Christianity and Islam will flip flop.

H5) Zero is so abstract. It probably took so long because we generally think of a number, something having a definite value, as representing a real quantity that we can see or feel. Zero on the other hand represents a quantity that does not exist, it represents nothing. It seems so rudimentary when we talk about it today, but I am sure that it took true genius to discover, not invent the quantity zero. I do not think man can “invent” anything. We can only discover. If we could invent, that would have to mean that we thought of something that God did not. Of course that is not true. God inspired the thought, we really just “uncovered” what he left us to find.

1) There are many qualities that would allow Alexander the Great to succeed. First, he was a born leader… He seized control of the throne immediately after his father died. Second, he has the capacity to learn. Clearly he was a bright man, or at least charismatic, as he united Greece from its previous condition of unordered city states. He had one of the greatest minds in history to learn from, Aristotle. He was arguably home schooled. He was both ruthless and gentle. However, the single most important or influential piece that led to his success, was that he truly defined “beneficiary of circumstance.” Undoubtedly there have been other men or women throughout history that were just as competent or savvy enough for war, but the majority of the time they fall prey to an outside force that prohibits them from maximizing their potential. I would go so far to say that there was another individual growing up with Alexander that was just as skilled as he. But the Bible says God chooses leaders, not to say Alexander the Great believed in God, nevertheless he was put in a position to lead by God. It is impossible to arise into a position of power unless every single thing goes your way. That happened for Alexander the Great, and that is why he, and not someone else, became world renowned.

2.) Greece has a unique landscape, in that it is quite hilly, which makes travel difficult. Greek city states were fond of democracy, because they were separated. A city state’s small population lent itself well to a democracy type government.

3.) The biggest advancement in language, or math, was the number 0. Having a symbol representing nothing is abstract, and at that time was probably considered a novelty. We take for granted the advancements in technology that allow us to be where we are at today.

4.) The Greeks were the first truly “curious” society, which naturally allowed them to advance their culture. They also thought logically; prior to the Greeks it seemed like society was just focused on war, while the Greeks were great fighters, they used logic to further advance not only their military, but their society as a whole.

5.) To comment on them all as a group, the most amazing thing to me about them is that they still represent the common problems people face to this day. This shows you that people have not changed, they are still going to wonder off today just as they did thousands of years ago, just the means between today and then are different.

6.) Socrates, because he would not budge in his way of thinking even when we was sentenced to death. He more than all believed in what he was doing. It was not just a study to him, it was a way of life.

7.) The messih tribe from northern Africa… I cannot find the correct spelling anywhere, sad but true. They are the definition of ancient. They are mentioned in “The Odyssey.” They also represent one of the only societies that has not changed over the years. They still drink only blood and goats milk. They only make fire with sticks. To become a man there you must wait in the jungle for three days and kill a lion with a spear. If you do not succeed, you are left to die. They are one of the most fascinating groups of people in all the world.

H1) Jesus was God. God knows all. Simply it is very likely that Jesus taught in Greek. He makes references in the Bible about drinking the cup his father gives him… some say this has implications that lead to Socrates being executed by drinking from a cup with Hemlock poison in it. Jesus brought back people from the dead. He could have preached in Greek if he wanted to.

H2) The Persian wars were more symbolic then they were important regarding the molding of history as we know it. Yes when Athens was defeated democracy was lost, but the real reason we hear about these wars is because of the mythical characters that supposedly fought in them.

H5) The Persians were ruthless. They were a massive fighting society. They had hundreds of thousands of soldiers. They were intelligent. They were well trained. Yet when they fought Sparta, they always had a rough time, even though they outnumbered the Spartans by a great deal. That is a real mystery. Were the Spartans that good? Or were the Persians that bad.

1) I hope to come out with a better understanding of history from an unbiased perspecitve.

2) Personally I think the beginning of time lends itself most to dispute… I am not saying that I disagree with the dates, however, if the beginning is false, every “logical” conclusion made after that must also be false.

3) Yes, it was a success, in those times… that said, this code would not be successful today, as an “eye for an eye” would not fly under modern day law, on top of that the means of tracking down someone to convict them are far superior now than back then. We do not need an eye for an eye, unless the crime is severe enough.

4) The Assyrian Empire was first, then the Chaldean Empire, and finally the Persian Empire. My personal favorite is the Persian Empire, as their dominance was during a time when they were not the only great power.

5.) There are many conflicts that can be tracked to the Middle East. The dispute over holy land is of the greatest significance.

6.) The old kingdom, the middle kingdom, and the new kingdom…. The greatest accomplishment of Ancient Egypt was their unique way of watering fields. Did this start as early as when Joseph was there?… the ancient Egyptians feel for agriculture was unmatched.

H2) There is not a particular dialect that determines the rise or fall of an empire, as no matter what culture we are in, all people feel the same general emotions, just the way of describing them is what really counts. The Egyptians two flaws were their language, and the fact that their “god” or Pharaoh, died. This created disbelief, and the fact that their written language was so inferior was instrumental in the inability to keep concise records, which till this day are hard to decipher… one has to wonder though, was their lack of an efficient language purposeful, as the ancient Egyptians did keep marvelous tallies of their successes, failures, food stores and population… this “language” was efficient, and the only time they used this picture language was in tombs when describing something mystical, which is far different from using it as a true language.

H4) The Babylonians also had superior gardens, which included the first Hydroponics systems, the hanging gardens at Babylon. This showed their intellect, as hydroponics is a far more efficient way to grow plants than in traditional soil.

1) I could have better prepared for this test by memorizing the dates more efficiently and not treading water on the same definition for some time.

2) My favorite question that is missed was the cartoon; I thought I had the answer nailed but I realized that I was about 50 years behind the correct time frame.

3) The scopes trial can be compared to the O.J. trial, in that everyone knew what was going on but decided to turn the other way.

4.) Most definitely… say we did not enter the war, Germany would have most likely been victorious, and would have had more confidence in WWII, which we in turn would have lost.

5.) Teddy Roosevelt was a real man, and what is fascinating is that he was so pro-saving the wildlife and forests. He was a unique president who could connect with listeners, and was an emphatic speaker. He was, in my opinion, one of our country’s better presidents.

6.) The 19th amendment… women can vote now… probably a good thing… however this is how those odd extremist movements start. First it is voting… then women will want to be I don’t know pro football players, then the league will have to change its rules so women can play, it is a slippery slope, I say keep the movement down, repeal their right to vote, then everyone is happy… I mean, look what happens when you let women vote, you end up with a Hillary Clinton, and she wears the pants.

7.) Basically Big Teddy exercising US power, a pleasant sight to see, this time taking it out on Russia and Japan. This is the Treaty of Portsmouth, and clearly this cartoonist is not lib., as he makes Roosevelt out to be an angelic like figure.

H1) The civil war, first recorded use of a submarine… The confederates had them, with torpedoes being made from long poles with dynamite attached to the end. I think this is quite innovative, unfortunately the north made one too, hense liquidating the south’s submarine.

H2) Free speech is a right, not a privilege, as liberals make it out to be… believe it or not other groups besides minorities should be allowed to say whatever they think as well… I do not care what people say, as long as you give your adversary a equal chance to respond… I do not think any time period, regardless of war, should result in the silencing of the people.

H4) I liked the midterm exam because the questions on the test were not exactly from the lectures, you had to extrapolate from what you knew about particular events or individuals in order to answer the questions. Challenging, but fair, as long as it is fair, I have no complaints.

#1) It is not really similar to any election. This is basically the first time besides Jess Jackson that we had a black person and a woman running for president; actually this is the first woman, oh wait and a vice president choice that was a woman as well, this should be called the “race of minorities,” no pun intended.

#2) It is good, only when your country is good. Like right now we would be going into countries to make them socialist, which is bad. Imperialism is like playing with fire, it is great sometimes, and other times you will burn your whole house, or in this case country, down…. But we could just “remake America” as Barack “Apollo” Obama has suggested.

#3) Like Imperialism, it is good and bad. I think woman should be able to vote, but some of this other garbage today, I am not going to say what, should not be allowed, feel free to extrapolate from that.

#4) Well I think Mr. Roosevelt is being watched by the world here. I am contemplating if he is going to throw that little Indian boy over the cliff, but that would contradict everything that whole Spanish-American War is about.

H1) Yes, we were in a war. The only way to end a war, what they did, is to take lives.

#1) The term “Gilded Age” was a period in American History from 1867-1897 coined by Mark Twain as a means of depicting a time when on the outside all seemed well but on the inside corruption was prevalent.

#2) Home schooling did create enormous wealth for Thomas Edison because it went along nicely with his natural curiosity, which allowed him to flourish. However, would Thomas Edison have been kept in school had he not been a “delinquent?”

#3) The frontier made Americans much more cavalier, thinking anything was possible; they did not have televisions then, so I am sure that stories regarding the frontiers were fabricated, which led to the need to explore and conquer.

#4) The United States is the only country in the modern era to have virtually no limitations on inventing. By that I mean America is truly fertile ground in that there is plenty of space in between each plant which allows for adequate growth without interruption.

#5) I think they are very influential. Usually if you remember the cartoon it had some impact, such as the cartoon depicting the Chinese immigrants struggles, and the Barack Obama cartoon in class last week regarding Obama changing his opinions, or at least that is what I thought it meant.

#6) I tried to think of someone else just to stray from the norm, but Alexander Graham Bell had to earn this award, as the telephone had then, and still has today the greatest impact out of any invention in the world.

#7) The cartoonist does not agree with the whole theory of the gold rush, as he depicts Uncle Sam sinking into to “Quicksand Gold.” In the cartoon Uncle Sam’s head is looking up at the prosperity sign on the sun in the horizon, but clearly fails, or even disregards the danger of the quicksand, which is followed by a mountain of silver, both the gold and silver being impossible to reach. This cartoonist is anti westward expansion.

H1) I agree that the “Democrat” Grover Cleveland was a conservative, mainly by his opposition to the size of the government, and his opposition to government spending.

H4) No I do not support Unions, as they generally morph into uncontrollable machines, such as the American Railway Union, headed by Eugene V. Debs, the most aggressive leader of the labor movement. Debs was thrown in prison for his leading of a strike against the Pullman railroad cars in 1894 over wages. And to this day Michigan is so depressed, strongly as a result of unions.

H5) He was wrong, as the gold standard is, and should be the only standard for backing currency, otherwise the dollar plummets in value, as has happened in our nation’s history. That said his speech was remarkable, even to read, as you can almost visualize the emotion which he spoke with. Emotion in speeches allows you to “win” to a point regardless of if you are actually right or wrong; people like when speakers are passionate about whatever they speak on.�

Week six homework

#1) the main goal was to keep the Union together, ending, or keeping slavery was a direct function of that. I disagree with Lincoln, he tried to appease both sides, similar to when someone is going into cardiac arrest, you probably tell the family that the victim is doing fine, while really they are dying. My point is that this war was going to happen regardless, by letting it fester, or trying to keep everyone happy, was not the brightest move, especially since slavery was a make or break issue for the southern economy. In the end you have to do the right thing. However sometimes the right thing and the hard thing are the same thing.

#2) The purpose of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were to insure that Afro-Americans, or any race, were treated equally, but mainly African Americans. The 13th amendment abolished slavery, the 14th gave all races equal rights, and the 15th amendment gave all races the right to vote.

#3) My favorite military hero of the Civil War was “Stonewall” Jackson. Quite terrible that I do not know his real first name. Reason I am so fond of him is due to his tenacious military tactics. All the generals of the South were quite competent, though Stonewall was on a different level. From what I read he would march right out there with his troops on the front line. Naturally this inspired the troops, to see that their general was not a pushover who was not afraid to fight. Quite ironic that Mr. Jackson did not perish on the frontlines, but was instead killed by his own men late at night in the midst of darkness. The real mystery is was this “friendly fire” killing a true mistake, or perhaps did these men conspire against Jackson out of jealousy, or were they spies for the Union? All to say this death of such a great general seems odd at the least, perhaps suspicious.

#4) I would not have, perhaps I would allowed Southern states back into Congress without the degree of difficulty that they faced. Remember that a good percentage of northerners agreed that the South was not a separate country, just a portion of the country in rebellion. They would be fools then to say that southern states were not allowed in Congress because they were a separate country. I disagree with slavery, as the Bible says all men are created equal, but I agree much more strongly with the views of the South as a whole, seeing that our country is becoming socialist. We need God’s help.

#5) I see that the only trait that was acquired as a result of home schooling was his ability to be self motivated. This trait encompasses many others, as Mr. Lincoln was a true man, not afraid to do the dirty work, and this trait allowed him to persevere through even the hardest of his times. Foremost to all though was his honesty and open-mindedness, as he EARNED the nickname “Honest Abe.” And as for the open mind portion, he came to Christ because of this; you do not here of many stubborn people coming to Christ, however you do hear much about people being stubborn in their defending of God, as they are now being stubborn for the right reasons. But you will never argue a soul to God, so too stubborn is not very good.

#6) This cartoon I have no clue about, but I remember that somewhere in the Bible Abraham had a dream from God, could be some correlation. But if I had to take a stab at it, I would have to say that Abraham Lincoln is in a disguise of some sort, and is being chased away by “Columbia,” or the representation of America, or at least that is what I think that is. Then to the far right you see a man casually strolling into the White House as Columbia and Lincoln are distracted. Perhaps that man is a future president or leader “sneaking” into office.

#7) During this time period, shortly after the first transcontinental railroad was finished, by the Chinese, it became very easy for the Chinese to travel from coast to coast to work. Especially in California, workers went on strike because the Chinese would work more for less. So as far eastward as Massachusetts owners of various production plants would import Chinese from the west coast, or vise versa, to fill the open jobs that were left by the striking workers. In the illustration there is a poster on the wall saying “Importation of Chinese Barbarians will be stopped by the BALLOT of BULL ET.” I take it that they were going to resort to force if whatever ballot they were referring to, probably some vote to see who wanted the Chinese here, did not pass. This cause, although not just, was not helped when in 1868 the Burlingame Treaty was signed between the United States and China, permitting unrestricted immigration by Chinese to U.S.

H1) The answer to this question will always be, or mostly be, decided based upon what line of work you are in. Personally deflation would be better for my family, because my father’s work does not depend on repaying a lone to someone. However my father’s parents, my grandparents, would benefit much more from inflation, because they are farmers. The reason that they would benefit more from inflation is because when a farmer borrows X amount of money from the bank, and inflation occurs, there money, at least on the outside, increases. Now when they go back to pay their original lone, they still only have to pay back the original amount that they borrowed. And when inflation occurs, they have more money, but still have to pay back their loan at the original low price. The exact opposite occurs with deflation. When deflation occurs, the value of the dollar rises because there is less of it, but regardless of this there is LESS TOTAL MONEY being passed around. But the farmers still have to pay their original loan back, regardless of the dollar worth, and when the dollar is deflated, it is significantly harder for farmers to pay back their borrowed money. Now if I did not confuse enough with this answer, in short the opposite of what happens with inflation and deflation with farmers is true for investors, they do better when the dollar is deflated. Oh yeah, I did not answer the question fully. Deflation is more by “hard money,” or every dollar or U.S. currency form is backed by gold, the international plum line of currency. #1) the revolution of 1800 was in fact not a “revolution” at all… It was the first time in recorded history, that there was a complete power switch in government, peacefully.

#2) if I was the president, I MOST DEFINITELY would have approved the Louisiana Purchase. Land is BY FAR the most valuable natural recourse. Granted Mr. Schlafly, it is very true that we could all fit into the east coast if we had to, but would that be necessary, or for that matter American? Not at all. So would I make the Louisiana Purchase, you bet I would.

#3) One cause of the war of 1812 was that England was harassing American sailors. Basically, we thought we were all that, so we decided to challenge England to another war, which we got destroyed in.

#4) The Monroe administration was one of the best in the history of our country. What I liked most about the administration is that he was a true Constitutionalist, or believed in following the Constitution to the letter. James Monroe was superb for numerous reasons, but perhaps most of all for his role in keeping the government out of people’s lives, and allowing the economy to flourish, a near polar opposite to today’s government.

#5) the phrase “Jacksonian Democracy” came from middle to lower class people loving him as much as upper class citizens despised of him. Andrew Jackson was the first president to be born in a log cabin; he won a landslide victory in 1828, and the main cause for this was because he portrayed himself as a “common man.” As hard as it is to say it, Jackson was a “Democrat” that I liked.

#6) The Marshall Court is known for expanding its power tremendously during John Marshall’s 35 year tenure as Chief Justice. Under Marshall’s dictatorship, the Supreme Court expanded its power tremendously. Virtually every major decision he made expanded federal power, starting with the Marbury vs. Madison case in 1803. This just goes to show that power hungry people were as real and dangerous as they are today. The reason our country is so great other than the fact that we were founded on principles of God, is that our Constitution was written on the basis that people are naturally evil, and they need to be kept in line. This obviously works well, but when evil comes into power, it welcomes evil, and will destroy even the greatest of nations.

#7) The figures in the cartoon are on the far left, a British looking man with devilish horns, representing that he is evil, or at the least not very well liked. In the middle is a bear, which represents in this case Russia, and on the far right is obviously a portrayal of early America, well represented I believe, in the form of a beautiful, innocent, most importantly free, nation. The captions depict vividly the struggles even still between Briton and the United States at this time, which is during the war of 1812. Russia, or the bear, is acting as a mediator, but we will have no dealing it or devilish little creature, the bull, until it is bound up, and can no longer be a potential threat to the United States. As a side note and question, I was wondering which of our presidents served as a an ambassador to Russia, and is he depicted in this cartoon as well?… as the bear that is… and also just the night and day difference between today’s and early American cartoons. Back then cartoons really met something serious, not just an insult, as many cartoons today are. They were much deeper then, having really to search for the meaning, which is good, because if you spent that much time to try to find a meaning , chances are you were really searching for one, and you obtained the important information that you were after.

H1) The most blatant and obvious answer to this question is that Jefferson was a old day liberal, and liberals like to exalt other liberals, even if the recognition is not valid. Now, I am by no means denying that Thomas Jefferson was a brilliant man, and one of the more brilliant founding fathers for that matter, which is an accomplishment in a league of its own. However, I am saying that by the time Jefferson’s second term was finished, his popularity ratings were not very good indeed, mostly for his LOSS in the “First Barbary” War (or the War with Tripoli). I am not anti-American by any standards, in fact I am extremely pro-USA. But to make it sound like we won a war, when we really did not is wrong. The fact that Jefferson was a liberal is one of the ONLY reasons that they did this. I say this because if Jefferson claimed to be a Conservative, he would have been charged with overseeing one of the biggest losses in American War history.

H4) This question can be answered in few words. The north favored tariffs, or import taxes, because they did not work farms, and it increased the number of American jobs. The south despises tariffs solely on the reason that they worked farms with various crops, but more importantly they owned slaves. A rise in tariffs, such as the “Tariff of Abominations,” passed in 1828, rose the tariffs so much and made importing slaves and various other necessities to work a farm so hard that they almost could not do this… however, the south did rise to the occasion, when John Calhoun of South Carolina secretly wrote the "South Carolina Exposition and Protest" in 1828, which stated that the:
"whole system of legislation imposing duties on imports,--not for revenue, but the protection of one branch of industry at the expense of others,--is unconstitutional, unequal, and oppressive, and calculated to corrupt the public virtue and destroy the liberty of the Country...."

When Jackson was informed of this he was infuriated, and took John Calhoun, at that time his vice-president, off the ticket for the next election.

H5) Slavery undoubtedly began to interfere with our freedom of speech when it came to the point that people were killing each other so slavery could either be permitted or banned in a specific area… This whole idea of “letting the people choose what they want,” by: some guy who has a name that I cannot remember, which basically discredit’s the validity of my work thus far in this essay… but hey, I knew half of it right? Anyway that idea to let people choose whether they wanted slavery in certain areas clearly did not work whatsoever; bloodshed was the only thing that resulted from that, besides more disunity between the north and the south. And yes, freedom of speech is being shot down today, but this time by the homosexuals. Now, I judge the person on the person, and I am not about to say that all homosexuals or lesbians are evil. However, when you call yourself a “protected group,” and can get other people in trouble if they say that your way of life is not normal, called a “hate crime” believe it or not, that is wrong. Be whatever you are going to be, but do not say that you are tolerant of everyone, which is a common standpoint from the homosexuals, when in fact you yourselves are the non-tolerant ones, because you are not tolerant of someone’s PERSONAL beliefs that your way of life is wrong… I do not even want to get started, we will see one day though, when God returns, who is right and who is wrong. All of our unanswered questions will finally be answered. Amen.

1) religious freedom, individual freedom, and economic freedom, or not having to conform to long standing regulations regarding what you can and can not do, basically allowing for capitalism.

2.) Reverend Jonathan Mayhew used the term in a sermon in Boston in 1750. This phrase was used to describe the bitter feelings towards Britons ability to tax the colonies without them having any say or position in Parliament.

3.) the Boston tea party took place on 12/16/1773. It was led by Samuel adams in an attempt to underscore the colonists valid hatred towards the newly passed “Tea Act” of 1773. Colonists, disguised as Indians, boarded British ships and dumped overboard 350 chests of tea! Although this did have a significant financial impact, nearly 1.8 million $ in today’s terms, the real point of the attack was to show 1) that the colonists were not intimidated by the British, and 2.) that they were at this point in time in their young history ready to branch off from Britain… this must have been a scary time for English officials during this time period.

4.) The devil, regardless of if the girls were possessed, is to blame. Either way people were killed, whether the allegations were true or not. This IS the work of the devil… as for the girls you would think that they would have better common sense as to not pretend to be demonic in a Puritan society, who historically to this point has not been known to take kindly to other religions, let alone some little girls claiming that they were controlled by the devil. All this can only lead me to believe that these girls were in fact possessed, not only because it would be so foolish to make such a claim, but also, according to record anyway, these girls were said to have identical stories.

5.) FALSE. Colonies having more religious freedom ought to have greater conflict with the king, because Protestantism was the norm at the time in England, and though not all the colonists were English, the greater percentage were… that being said, religious freedom in this case would have to mean Catholicism, or Anglicism, which were not the standard in England… This would mean that religiously tolerant colonies would have more disputes with the king than non-tolerant, or religiously free colonies.

6.) Debate: Should England have been able to impose direct taxes on the colonies?

This is a vague question, leaving up for interpretation whether or not the colonies were able to have representation for these taxes, and whether or not English citizens were subject to these same taxes.
However, answering this question strictly from the historical point of view, i.e. not having representation for their taxes, I believe and know that it was completely wrong of England to impose direct taxes. I also get the impression that God did not appreciate this at some level, the fact that England was a protestant country and they were using their power, with the God label on their shields, to impose all of these taxes… I would assume that this gave a bad name at some level for Christianity, seeing a world power such as England say they are Christian and then do something like this…. Well God had his vengeance, and freed us from that “world power” only shortly there after, a testament to the character, and power, of God.

7.) This cartoon represents the colonies need to unite, or their unavoidable doom. This cartoon had to be created before the war, as a very moving picture of what the colonists will be undivided, useless, or what they could be together, a deadly serpent. This is represented as all the state abbreviations are next to different parts of the divided snake… but I wonder, did they put more important colonies near the head of the snake?

H1) What is interesting about this map is that all areas left of the dotted line have Either French or Indian names. Looking at the map you can see what a small portion of today’s America the original colonies made up, and how much of a miracle it was that we won the war seeing how accessible our ports were for British ships to just come and go as they pleased.

H4) The key differences between colonial America and England was very evident. Their economies were very different. Although England was not communist, it definitely did not allow for the same growth of individuals as today’s United States does, such as Capitalism. Although not at first, America has much more religious freedom then England did, the cultures were similar, most likely because most of the colonists were from England. I think that the two most interesting differences between America and Briton, which still hold true to this day, is that 1) how we have the freedom of the press. We take it for granted that we have this right, but people in Briton, to this very day, can get arrested for speaking out against the government, or anyone in power for that matter. It also proved that the truth is the perfect response or defense against libel, or defamation.

H5) Debate: Do you think a jury should be able to ignore the law in order to find a defendant “not guilty?”

Although it may work in the favor of the accused for the wrong reasons at times, I do feel strongly that the jury should be able to ignore the law and do “the right thing,” if necessary. Without this ability you lose the factor of human interpretation, which can be important. Sometimes breaking the law for the greater good is important, and without this human interpretation element you could put a lot of people that were doing the wrong thing for the right reasons behind jail, which I strongly feel is wrong. As I said, granted you can, and will make mistakes with this method, but I feel that the majority of the time this outlook to law will be very beneficial to the legal process as a whole.
