The Battle of Brandy Station was the largest cavalry battle ever fought on the North American continent. Of the 20,000 soldiers involved, about 17,000 were of the mounted branch. Brandy Station is also the first battle of the war's most famous campaign - Gettysburg.

Prelude
The Confederates had planned for June 9, 1863, to be a day of maneuver rather than of battle. Two of the army's three infantry corps were near Culpeper, six miles southwest of Brandy Station, poised to move into the Shenandoah Valley and thence up to Pennsylvania. Major General J.E.B. Stuart, at Brandy Station, was to screen this movement with his 9,5000-man cavalry division, while the remaining infantry corps held the attention of the Union Army at Fredericksburg, 35 miles southeast of Brandy Station.

The Federals knew that Confederate cavalry was around Culpeper, but its intelligence had not gathered information of the sizeable infantry force behind the horsemen. Army of the Potomac commander, Major General Joseph Hooker, interpreted the enemy's cavalry presence around Culpeper to be indicative of preparations for a raid of his army's supply lines. Accordingly, he ordered his Cavalry Corps commander, Brigadier General Alfred Pleasonton, to "break up Stuart's raid in its incipiency."

The Confederates apparently did not expect any harassment from the enemy cavalry, for the day before the important screening mission was scheduled to take place, the Southern troops conducted a grand review for General Robert E. Lee at Inlet Station, just two miles southwest of Brandy Station. Meanwhile, 8,000 Federal cavalryman organized into three divisions, and about 3,000 Northern infantryman were preparing to disrupt the Confederate plans.

Battle
About 4:30 a.m. on June 9, Brigadier General John Buford's column on 5,500 soldiers splashed across the fog-shrouded Rappahannock River surprising the Confederate pickets at Beverly's Ford. Nearby Southern horsemen from Brigadier General William "Grumble" Jones' brigade, awakened by the sound of gunfire, rode into the fray partially dressed and often riding bareback. They struck Buford's leading brigade, commanded by Colonel Benjamin F. "Grimes" Davis, near a bend in the Beverly's Ford Road and temporarily checked its progress. In the fighting Davis was killed.

Davis' brigade had been stopped just short of where the Confederate Horse Artillery was camped and was vulnerable to capture. Cannoneers swung one or two guns into position and fired down the road at Buford's men, enabling the other pieces to escape and establish the foundation for the subsequent Confederate line. The artillery unlimbered at the Gee House and at St. James Church—structures located on two knolls on either side of the Beverly's Ford Road.

Most of Jones' command rallied to the left of this Confederate artillery line, while Brigadier General Wade Hampton's brigade formed to the right. The 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry suffered the greatest casualties of any regiment participating in the battle, when it unsuccessfully charged across a field to the very muzzles of the guns at St. James Church.

Realizing that the Southern artillery blocking the direct route to Brandy Station was a force to be dislodged, Buford determined to anchor his right on the Hazel River and try to turn the Confederate left. But he found Brigade General W.H.F. "Rooney" Lee's brigade blocking his advance with some troops on a piece of high ground called Yew Ridge and some dismounted troopers positioned along a stone wall in front. After sustaining heavy losses, the Federals wrestled the stone wall away from the Confederates. Then, to the amazement of Buford's men, the Confederates began pulling back.

The Southerners were shifting to meet a new threat, adjusting to their second surprise of the day. Brigadier General David M. Gregg's Union division of about 2,800 men had orders to cross the Rappahannock at Kelly's Ford and proceed on roads leading directly into Brandy Station, but discovered his way blocked by Brigadier General Beverly Robertson's brigade. However, Gregg determined that another road network leading to the battlefield by a more circuitous route was completely unguarded. Following these roads, his lead brigade under Colonel Percy Wyndham arrived in Brandy Station about 11 a.m. Between Gregg and the battle taking place between Buford and Stuart was a prominent ridge called Fleetwood Hill. The eminence had been Stuart's headquarters, but the general was at the front and the only force on Fleetwood when Gregg arrived was a 6-pounder howitzer, which had been sent to the rear for want of reliable ammunition. Major Henry B. McClellan of Stuart's staff pressed this gun into service and sent a desperate plea to his chief for reinforcements. Wyndham meanwhile formed his men into line and charged up the western slope of Fleetwood. As he neared the crest, the lead elements of Jones' brigade, which had just withdrawn from St. James Church, rode over the crown.

Gregg's next brigade, led by Colonel Judson Kilpatrick, swung around east of Brandy Station and attacked up the southern end and the eastern slope of Fleetwood Hill, only to discover that their appearance coincided with the arrival of Hampton's Confederates. A series of confusing charges and countercharges swept back and forth across the hill. The Confederates cleared the hill for the final time, capturing three guns and inflicting 30 casualties among the 36 men of the 6th New York Light Artillery, which had attempted to give close-range support to the Federal cavalry

Colonel Alfred Duffie, with a small 1,2000-man division, was delayed by two Confederate regiments in the vicinity of Stevensburg and arrived on the field too late to participate in the action.

While Jones and Hampton withdrew from their initial positions to fight at Fleetwood Hill, "Rooney" Lee continued to confront Buford, falling back to the northern end of the hill. Reinforced by Colonel Thomas Munford, commanding the brigade of the ailing Fitzhugh Lee, "Rooney" Lee launched a counterattack against Buford at the same time as Pleasonton had called for a general withdrawal, and the battle was over.

Despite being surprised by his adversary twice in the same day, Stuart was able to retain the field. Union losses numbered 866; Confederate casualties were reported at 575. But the overwhelming superiority that the Confederate cavalry once enjoyed was gone.
Canon refers to a group of works considered to be central, vital, and legitimate in some field.

One of its more common uses is in describing which books are considered valid parts of the Bible, with various denominations using slightly different lists.

In broader use, one sees applications such as "fan fiction is not considered canonical in the lore of Star Trek".

A canon is also a compositional form in classical music.

The Coen Brothers are the collective name for the film makers Joel and Ethan Coen. They have written and directed a number of critically acclaimed movies since their debut Blood Simple in 1984. Their film No Country For Old Men won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 2007.

Their movies are noted for their black humor and frequently bloody violence. The Coens are Jewish, and their movies exhibit a typical Hollywood liberal bias of celebrating deviancy and disrespect for the military; e.g, The Dude in The Big Lebowski is a sympathetically drawn 1960s dropout, while his friend Walter, a Jewish Vietnam veteran, is portrayed as belligerent and stupid. Christians are often portrayed as hypocritical and self-serving, although this is true of many of their characters in general. Their 2009 film A Serious Man dealt with a Jewish physics professor struggling to understand God, the universe, and causality, and can be variously interpreted through Jewish theology, quantum physics, and relativity.

Noted collaborators include liberals George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Tim Robbins. Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, John Goodman, and Frances McDormand also make frequent appearances in their films.
Stratigraphy or stratification in archaeology refers to the study of the layering of successive levels of soil and other material within a site. Unlike geology, archaeological stratigraphy is a record of human activities and behavior, and is sometimes the only method of which a history of a particular human society can be recovered.

Michelle F

1. When and where was the Industrial Revolution?

The Industrial Revolution first began in England, in 1760, and continued until about 1840. The British tried to withhold information about the new machinery and techniques that were being used, but they were unable to contain the information. It continued in some Asian and Eastern European countries until the mid 1900s.

:Superb!

2. Pick your two favorite scientists or mathematicians from the 1800s and explain what you like about them.

Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, is my favorite scientist of that century. He became interested in the science of sound for the purpose of finding an easier way of communicating with his partially deaf mother. He made hearing aids and other such devices, but his most well known invention is the telephone. Random fact: he believed that the proper phone greeting was “ahoy-hoy”.

Also, Michael Faraday, who was not a good person morally, but was a brilliant scientist. He discovered many laws, principles, and chemicals, and invented an early form of the Bunsen burner. He was one of the most influential scientists of the 19th century.

:Terrific, thorough answer. Thanks for the fascinating greeting preferred by Alexander Graham Bell!

3. Do you think the Industrial Revolution was good or bad, and why?

I think it was mixed. It bears some similarity to the “Gilded Age”; it had the appearance of growth, wealth, and prosperity, but just under the “gilded” surface lurked deceit, greed, and poverty. I think, all things considered, it was mostly good.

:Good.

4. Give an example of nationalism from the lecture, with dates.

In 1848, King Wilhelm appointed Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck to office, with the intention of unifying Germany under Prussian control. Bismarck knew that if a foreign adversary attacked Germany, the states would be unified against a common enemy. It would be less difficult to form a more formal union after having fought together. Quite simply, your enemy’s enemy is your friend. In 1871, after having provoked France into a war which Prussia and her allies won, Germany was united under King Wilhelm I, formerly of Prussia, now “Kaiser” of the “Second Reich”.

:Superb.

5. What is imperialism? Describe the four patterns of imperialism.

Extending the influence of a country or business by conquering/settling an area, or by exerting economic, and or, political influence over an area. The four patterns imperialism usually took were:

1.	Establishing colonies, in which the area is ruled by the mother country, and protected by it.

2.	Establishing protectorates, in which the protectorate has its own government, but is protected by the more powerful country.

3.	“Spheres of influence”, a less direct form of imperialism, in which the country had special trading privileges in the “sphere of influence”.

4. “Economic imperialism”, in which a business exerts influence over a region.

:Right, but it's good to strive to simply in your own words to learn

6. Describe any aspect of Africa in the 1800s, such as an example of imperialism.

Africa is an excellent example of how many large nations have used imperialism as carte blanche to do as they pleased. They destroyed the land, oppressed and enslaved the people, arbitrarily divided land with no thought to existing cultural divides, and destroyed the cultures and languages by forcing European culture and languages upon them. Africa is still suffering the repercussions of this exploitation today.

:Terrific answer. You present your argument very well. But do you think the imperialism by the European nations was all bad in Africa? Hospitals were built by the Europeans, for example.

7. Pick any aspect of Asian history in the 1800s and describe and discuss it.

Opium had become a serious problem in China. The British had gotten the Chinese addicted, so that they would keep buying, which translated into a nice profit for Britain, and an addicted populace for China. This issue led to the Opium War, and later another rebellion. Opium caused much grief; it destroyed lives, and caused bitterness against Europeans. Yet another example of imperialism gone bad.

:Excellent, may use as a model answer!

H1. Utilitarianism - what is it, and what's your view of it?

Utilitarianism is the application of business principles to government. It also removes freedom, and puts choices in the hands of the government. At a first glance, it could seem beneficial: everything would ideally be done for the good of the people. But in truth, people are corrupt, and those running the government would have their own good at heart. Also, different people have different ideas of what is best. Some people may think that the benefit in, say, funding abortion is greater than the cost. Business principles cannot be the only principles used in government. Decisions like that need to be made with respect to morals, and conscience, not profit.

:Fantastic answer, will definitely use as a model!

H2. What is your view of imperialism, and whether it is sometimes good?

I think there are some occasions that it could be good, but, as a whole, I’d have to say that it gives too much power that is abused too often to be a good thing. I think that the motives of the mother country are too often questionable. Do most countries really go into other nations with intentions to better that nation, or are they doing it for their own profit? I think that in most instances they are doing it for their own benefit, and, more often than not, leave the country no better than they found it, sometimes worse. I think that yes, it is sometimes good, but not often enough that it is worth advocating imperialism.

:Good analysis, consistent with your other answers on this issue.

H4. Describe how Japan to became a military powerhouse by the 20th century.

Japan was busy in the 1800s; busy changing itself from a puny nation, which locked itself away, to the beginnings of being a world power. In the 1800s, Japan was setting the stage for this revolution. There was a literal revolution, which ended in the Tokugawa shogun abdicating, and a new emperor establishing a new government. Japan also underwent an Industrial Revolution of their own. With their new, centralized government, stronger military, and now industrialized nation, Japan felt ready to take on the world. Or, at least Russia.

:Superb!

:Terrific work. 100/100. Congratulations!--Andy Schlafly 13:02, 19 April 2009 (EDT)
