Cinco de Mayo
Hi

I took out Benito Juarez from the "See also" because it is already in the text.

Where are you?

--User:Joaquín Martínez, talk 19:25, 5 May 2007 (EDT)

:: ¡Hola Joaquín! -- I didn't see that you had done that and thought I had neglected to include it, lol. No problem, do as you see fit - anyone can edit the pages, and hopefully make them better. I am in New Mexico, check my user page -- http://www.conservapedia.com/User:Taj -- ¡Feliz cinco de mayo! --Taj 21:40, 5 May 2007 (EDT)

Gracias. Saludos desde Campeche, Mexico.

Images....
I positioned the image in your article the other night. The one you posted on Dan's page. Do what I do; go to some other pages with images, and copy the insert code from there, and substitute the name of your image for what is there. Adding a | between the brackets, after the image name, and typing center, right, left, controls its placement. You can also add text below the image with the same | inserted. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 17:16, 6 May 2007 (EDT)

:: Thank you very much for your assistance with the image in New Mexico :) For some reason I have difficulty with images, first in uploading, then in placing them, even when copying from already existing "code". I am new to "wiki" style editing, so I appreciate your help! --Taj 19:28, 6 May 2007 (EDT)

: Thank you for the reply. I referenced the link to the government site where I found the info: http://www.nps.gov/archive/inde/liberty-bell.html - and about halfway down the page, under "Bell Facts" it lists the composition of the Liberty Bell, which I included in the edit. Since this is clearly written on the page of a government website, and quite obvious, I really don't know what more I could have done, or what to make of my sourced, factual, edits and public domain photos being instantly reverted and deleted. Taj 20:36, 18 August 2007 (EDT)

::My best guess is that you accidentally pasted the wrong web link. I've made the same kind of mistake many times. I value your edits, but this one was imperfect so I rolled it back.

::After I was given the correct web link, I "undid" my reversion and placed the link. --Ed Poor Talk 20:40, 18 August 2007 (EDT)

So, I blocked a new user for making stupid "joke" edits with sexual references in a couple of pages. The edits were clearly inappropriate. Then I got a comment (already reverted by DanH, thanks) on my talk page with derogatory remarks. Ludicrous. I will block anyone who vandalizes pages, (no one has the right to destroy other's work just because you don't agree with it) - this does not mean I should be attacked and targeted with offensive comments, or that anyone can make assumptions regarding my beliefs or views or assume that I am intolerant of any particular group of people, unless I have clearly stated so, which I haven't. Before deciding to criticize me or leave a stupid comment on my talk page, one should read my user page to see what I believe in. I am respectful of all religions, whether or not it is what I personally believe. I just wish the people who vandalize pages were as tolerant and accepting of other's views as well. Cancer

Iglesias: typo

The term cancer refers to many different diseases. They all have in common uncontrolled cell proliferation (growth and division). Cancers are usually named for the organ or cell type that is originally involved. After beginning at one site, cancer may metastasize (spread) to other organs. The cancer is still named by its place of origin.

Prevention and Screening
Preventative strategies are continuously being revised. Please see references below for up to date information.
*Breast cancer: In women without a family history of breast cancer, mammograms should be done yearly. Clinical breast exam by a medical professional should also be done yearly. Women who have had abortions are significantly more likely to contract breast cancer.
*Lung cancer: There are no currently accepted preventative guidelines
*Prostate cancer: evidence is inconclusive, but most doctors recommend yearly PSA blood test and digital rectal exam
*Colon cancer: in people without a family history of colon cancer, most sources recommend a colonoscopy at age 50, with further studies based on the results. Fecal occult blood testing should also be conducted yearly.
*Cervical cancer: yearly Pap smears should be done on all women who have been sexually active and have not had a hysterectomy. Over age 65, women in monogamous relationships and recent normal Pap smears probably do not need to be screened as frequently.
*Testicular cancer: the evidence is unclear, however most physicians recommend routine testicular exams in young men.
*Skin cancer: keep skin protected from sunlight by use of clothing and sunscreen, and watch you skin for new moles, or changes in existing moles.

Treatment of cancer
chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs that kill tumor cells. Conventionally, the drugs that are used are those that target cells which are rapidly undergoing mitosis; this approach is effective but is limited by side effects, which occur because these drugs have an adverse effect on normal tissues that contain rapidly-dividing cells. Research is under way to find drugs with a wider therapeutic index. One approach is to study specific molecular markers that may be used to identify cancer cells, and to develop drugs that preferentially kill cells that exhibit those markers.

radiation therapy
Radiation therapy involves the use of precisely-targeted radiation to destroy cancer cells. Because radiation damages DNA and thus has the ability both to treat and to cause cancer, this method of treatment must be administered by physicians highly-skilled in physics.

surgery
The goal of cancer surgery is to physically remove the abnormal cells. This becomes more difficult after the cancer spreads. Often, chemotherapy is used either before or after surgery to kill cancer cells that have metastasized.

immunotherapy
The immune system contains a number of cell types, such as NK cells and killer T cells that have the capability to destroy other cells that have become infected with viruses or have become cancerous. Immunotherapy involves the enhancement or potentiation of these natural defenses against tumor cells.

New and Experimental Treatments
There are many new and experimental treatments for cancer developed every day. These should be viewed with skepticism until more is known about the effects that these treatments may have since many "cures" for cancer have been publicized or marketed without FDA approval and have been found to be ineffective if not harmful. An example of this is Kent Hovind supporting the use of laetrile (also known as amygdalin, or misleadingly "vitamin" B17) which is found in the seeds of raw fruits such as apricots as a cure for cancer. This has never been found to cure cancer from any research but instead has been shown to cause cyanide poisoning.

Phenomena are occurrences or strange happenings that typically cannot be explained by science, for example ball lightning or the efficacy of prayer. In scientific circles, the word carries a bit of a negative connotation.

Examples of so-far-unexplained phenomena include:
*Prayer
*Migration of birds in winter
*Extrasensory phenomena
*The Great Flood
*St. Elmo's fire
*Tornadoes
*When the sun stood still over Jericho
*The miracle of the loaves and fishes

On the other hand, when scientists believe they have truly explained some process, such as evolution or the Big Bang, they are rarely called phenomena anymore.

In Mexican culture, a sombrero is a large hat that people use to keep the sun off their foreheads and necks during the workday. The word sombrero means "shady," because the hat provides shade for the person wearing it.

In the United States, sombreros have become representative of Mexicans and Mexico as a whole. This is no doubt partly because of the popular song "The Mexican Hat Dance", also known by its Mexican title "La Cucharacha", which is danced around a sombrero placed on the ground.

Cartoon character Speedy Gonzalez also wears a sombrero.

Churros are a popular Mexican dessert or snack food. They are a pastry made of dough that is fried and then covered lightly in sugar. The dough is squeezed through a tube called a churrera to make the long rope shape.

Churros are popular in Mexico as a dessert or as a breakfast food, like Danish pastry or bear claw in America. They are also sold on the street or in backeries.

Mariachi

Iglesias: explain what are vihuela and guitarron

Mariachi is a kind of music that is very popular in Latin America, especially Mexico. A mariachi band has at least five members: violin, trumpet, and three kinds of guitar: regular guitar, vihuela (high pitched), and guitarron (low pitched). Professional mariachi bands, as you might see in a concert, have three or four violin players and at least two trumpets, which makes eight or nine members all together. But smaller groups, like in an authentic Mexican restaurant, might just have one of each.

The name mariachi comes from marriage, because mariachi bands used to play at weddings. This style of music originated in Jalisco, Mexico, but now is popular all across the Southwest United States.

Colorado River

2008-07-25T20:39:28Z

Iglesias: Did you know the Colorado River used to be called the Grand River?

The Colorado River is one of the longest rivers in the United States, at about
1450 mi (2330 km) long, and flows from the Rocky Mountains of northern
Colorado, just west of the Continental Divide, then primarily southwest through
Colorado, Utah, and Arizona, then flows along the border between
Nevada and Arizona, and Arizona and California; and continues through
Mexico, emptying into the Gulf of California. It passes through several Lakes
and dams, most notably Hoover Dam, and also runs through the Grand Canyon.

Old name
The Colorado River used to be called the "Grand River", until 1921, when it got its current name. Because it flowed through the Grand Canyon, it also gave the name "Grand" to several other towns, including Grand Junction and Grand County, Colorado.
