The Iran-Contra Affair (also called the Iran-Contra Scandal, the Iran-Contra Matter and Iran-gate) was the result of an illegal arms deal between the United States, sworn enemy Iran and the Nicaraguan Contras, a terrorist group operating against the democratically elected government of Nicaragua.. The Reagan Administration sought to hide evidence of its collusion in this illegal circumvention of a Congressional ban on arms support for Iran and the Contras by shredding tons of documents in violation of direct subpoena of these documents. Many details of the affair are still classified and the level to which money from cocaine sales in the US were used to fund this illegal war are shrouded in secrecy, though that this occurred is [http://foia.fbi.gov/filelink.html?file=/christic_institute/christic_institute.pdf well documented by the FBI]. Essentially, arms were sold to Iran against an international embargo which was spearheaded just years earlier by the United States. The proceeds from this arms sale were then used to purchase additional arms for the Contra Guerilla group operating in the mountains of Nicaragua. These arms were often used against civilian populations in the Contras' war against the government of Nicaragua.

After the arms sales were revealed in November 1986, President Ronald Reagan appeared on national television and denied that they had occurred. However, a week later, on November 13, he returned to the airwaves to affirm that weapons were indeed transferred to Iran. He denied that they were part of an exchange for hostages.

The International Brigades were foreign volunteers who came to Spain to fight against Fascist forces during the [[Spanish Civil War]] (1936–39). The Brigades came from 50 countries and many leftist writers sympathized and popularized them.

George Orwell

George Orwell was the pen name for Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950), who was a leading English socialist writer and journalist who exposed the evils of Stalinism in two novels published near the end of his life: [[Animal Farm]] and [[Nineteen Eighty-Four]].

A lifelong socialist, George Orwell learned about Stalinism when he volunteered to fight the Spanish Fascist forces to keep them from overturning the democratically elected socialist government of Spain in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939. Taking a bullet through his neck but surviving, Orwell was dismayed the discover that Russian support for the [[International Brigades]] was curtailed in order to stockpile arms and personnel for the coming war against Germany. Also, Soviet support for the Republican effort was contingent upon the isolation of Socialist and Anarchist militias who Stalin felt threatened communist interests in western Europe. Orwell himself was a member of the POUM, in Engish, the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification.

Orwell had only ten years left in his life when he returned. During that period he and his wife adopted a baby boy, but then Orwell's wife died shortly thereafter. In those ten years Orwell wrote his famous anti-stalinst classics described above, first spending three years on the short story [[Animal Farm]] (1944), and then perhaps five years on the longer novel [[1984]] (1949). He died of tuberculosis the next year.
