The capital is Oslo, and the principal language in Norwegian, though Sami languages are also spoken in the far north. Norway is one of the few Western European nations not in the European Union but is a member of the Schengen Agreement group of countries which permit cross-border travel without passport control.

Norway has, according to scholars working in the old-earth paradigm, had inhabitants since the last ice age (some 10,000 years ago). There may, according to these scholars, have been some groups of people living in the coastal regions even earlier. The most famous group of Norwegians are the Vikings (the origin of the name is not certain). They proliferated from the year 800 A.D. to 1100, approximately. Modern Norwegians, such as the mild-mannered King Harald V, are a far cry from the common image of their ancestors, although this image is somewhat skewed by Anglo-Saxon and Irish accounts of raids. Norway has a high proportion of atheists and few explicitly religious citizens, although it has a state church (lutheran).fact. It also has the second highest per capita income GDP (PPP) in the world and, according to the UN, some of the best quality of life of any nation on the planet alongside other Scandinavian countries.

A survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit based on measures including military spending and actions and violent crime rates has found that Norway is the most peaceful country in the world.
In modern terms, an Arab is anyone of (1) Middle-Eastern descent and (2) has some facility in the Arabic language. Historically, the term was narrower, referring to only those from Arabia. There is a tendency among Westerners to regard all Arabs as Muslims, but this is incorrect, as there are lots of Christian Arabs, as well as other-religioned Arabs: actor Danny Thomas was a Christian Arab; the Copts of Egypt are Christian Arabs.
The Arabic language is a member of the Semitic stock (which includes Hebrew) of the Afro-Asiatic family of languages, and with the Berberic languages, display remarkable structural similarities, which are taken by evolutionists to demonstrate common descent, but might as well be signs of a common designer.
Apart from DNA in certain citizens, and geography, modern Egypt has no links at all with it's ancient past. The culture and religion that built the pyramids was weakened by the Greeks and Romans, then annihilated by Islam in the seventh and eighth centuries AD., The most ancient continuous cultural link in Egypt would be the Coptic Christian Church that has managed to hang on from the first century to the present. The Bible states clearly that God created languages as a response to the Tower of Babel (in about 2242 BC). Now if you want to believe that English evolved from Proto-Germanic which evolved from Proto-Indo-European which evolved from monkeys grunting at each other, that's fine, but I don't think a conservative encyclopedia should state it as fact. It's just a theory espoused by evolutionist linguists, and it should be presented as such. --Brtkrbzhnv 12:11, 21 March 2007 (EDT)

Hindi syntax is distinctive because it relies on incorporation, a process in which verbs and direct objects fuse into a single unit. This structure is common to almost all of the world's languages; however, it is very rare in the hypothesized Indo-European family. Its presence in Hindi is probably due to the influence of neighboring Dravidian languages.
Due to the enormous political and economic influence of the these nations, English functions as the world's major international language.
Evolutionists believe that English is a member of the Germanic language family, but with significant influence from French, a Romance language. This is largely due to the conquest of Saxon-speaking England by French speaking Normans in 1066 AD. English owes some of its structure (its system of auxilliary verbs, for example) to French. In terms of the lexicon, Old English words are a minority, though they predominate when one looks at the most commonly-used words), whereas words from French are more numerous, followed by Latin, Greek, and other modern languages.
Since that time, English has continued to grow and evolve, borrowing thousands of words from other languages, among them French, Latin, Greek, and Spanish, as well as generating new words of its own. In large part as a result, English has one of the largest lexicons (vocabularies) of any world language, and is particularly rich in synonyms and near-synonyms. It is the primary (native) language of approximately 400 million people worldwide, as well as a secondary, or learned language of 600 million more. There are estimated to be nearly one billion people currently learning English.

English spelling, though originally phonetic, has evolved considerably over time. By the Middle English period, spelling had become quite variable, and standard spellings did not evolve until the late seventeenth century. In the United States, the lexicographer Noah Webster argued for simplifying some spelling which were no longer phonetic, such as the -our in words such as "colour". Most, though not all, of his proposed changes were adopted, such that US English spelling differs from UK English in some hundreds of instances. UK English spelling is the standard in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and most of the Commonwealth of Nations including Canada and Australia; US English spelling is the standard in the United States and its territories.

The term "English" may also be used to refer to a person from the United Kingdom born in the country of England.

English is not the "language" of the United States, but rather the most commonly used language in the U.S. ColinR 20:09, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

English is not both a Romance and Germanic language. It is a Germanic language, specifically a West Germanic language. However, English can correctly be called the "least Germanic" of Germanic languages, due to its heavy borrowing from French after the Norman Conquest of 1066.

::Don't want to niggle about this -- since I'm a linguist by training, I know what you are saying, but I want to put this in plain language that non-linguists can understand. Yes, English in orgin is a West Germanic language, but some of its parts are grafts, as it were-- our pronoun system comes from Danish, and many of our syntactical habits (use of auxilliary verbs, for instance) come from French. In terms of the lexicon, Saxon-era words are a small minority (though predominant in the 1st decile of most commonly-used words), French the big contributor, followed by Latin, Greek, and other modern languages. So I want to give a sense that English is really a language with a mixed heritage, getting more mixed all the time, which is its strength! But I don't want to write something that sounds too technical. Hmm -- maybe I can adapt what I just said above . . . .
As most people in the world use British English spelling (Canada - double standard; Great Britain and Ireland, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia), why does this encyclopedia not go with the majority?
::Most people in the world are heathens as well, but this encyclopedia is to be as a city upon a hill. This is, however, not the right place for this discussion, so hurry along.

Evolutionists believe Latin to belong to the Italic family of the Indo-European group of languages. Its closest relatives are believed to have been Umbric and Etruscan, which are both extinct now. Latin was the language of the Roman Empire, from which all the Romance languages are derived. These languages include Spanish, Romanian, Portuguese, and Italian.

Latin grammar is marked by an extensive system of noun cases and verbal inflection. Noun cases are organized along nominative-accusative lines, with several other oblique cases also used. Verbal morphology distinguishes both case and aspect. Phonologically, Latin is generally similar to other western languages referred to by evolutionists as the Indo-European family. However, Latin was innovative because it had a whole series of ejective stops. Interestingly, these consonants neither existed in Italic nor survived into the Romance daughter languages.

Brtkrbzhnv: Removed evolutionist bias + a few factual errors.

Evolutionists consider the Egyptian language to be a member of the Afro-Asiatic family of languages and thus related to Berber and Semitic. They believe that Egyptian has been spoken since before 2600 BC; however, Christians believe that all languages were created by God in 2242 BC.
Evolutionists break the development of Egyptian into six stages. Archaic Egyptian is believed to have been used before 2600 BC; Old Egyptian is theorized to have been spoken from 2600 to 2000 BC, and Middle Egyptian was in use between 2000 and 1300 BC. Middle Egyptian fell out of everyday use after 1300 BC, but survived through the first few centuries AD as a formal written language, used in the same way as Latin was in Medieval Europe. The Late Egyptian language was spoken from 1300 to 700 BC. Later, Demotic was spoken from 700 BC to 500 AD, and overlapped with Coptic, which came into use in 400 AD and survived until the sixteenth century AD.
The structure of Egyptian is similar to many other Afro-Asiatic languages. Most words have a root of three consonants, although some have more or less. Vowels are not written in Egyptian. Egyptian, like many of its supposedly related languages, has single, dual, and plural forms of nouns, meaning a noun can be written three different ways signifying one thing, two things, and three or more things. Like the Romance Languages and Irish Gaelic, Egyptian nouns are either masculine or feminine. Egyptian’s basic word order is Verb Subject Object. ‘The man opens the door’ would be ‘Opens the man the door’.
When most people think of the Egyptian Language, they think of hieroglyphs, but not all Egyptian is written with glyphs. While Archaic, Old, Middle, and Late Egyptian were written with hieroglyphs, Demotic was written with an alphabet similar to modern Arabic script, and Coptic was written with a modified form of the Greek alphabet.
