Music is a form of art. It has the capability of taking a variety of complex thoughts and forming them into a simple order of words. Music has been apart of the world for centuries and has been able to inspire a multitude of people. For myself, it is an escape from all of the struggles the world throws my way.

The song “Prodigal” by Casting Crowns has had a huge impact on my life as of lately. It demonstrates the parable that is taught by Jesus in the book of Luke, about two sons who inherit their father’s wealth. The youngest son receives his portion and leaves home in order to pursue his <u>sublunary</u> desires. He sets off for a distant country and there squanders his wealth in wild living. After the son’s entire fortune was gone, a terrible famine hit the country leaving him with nothing. Spending much of his time on hard and tiring work the son realized that he needed his fathers love and support in order to survive. Embarrassed and ashamed the son started back home, hoping that his father would at least take him back as a servant. Much to his surprise the father welcomed him home with open arms and a loving heart. The father was neither upset nor angry with his son, but instead he was thrilled to have him back in his presence once again.

Casting Crowns song quotes-“Daddy here I am again, take me back
tonight. I went and made the world my friend, and it left me high and dry. I dragged your name back through the mud that you first found me in, not worthy to be called your son, is this to be my end? Daddy here I am.” Often times, we conform ourselves to what the world expects and not to what God wants. We live our lives, make stupid mistakes, and never really think about God as much as we should. In fact, we hardly think about him at all. Most of the time we don’t turn to him until we need something, something that is too much for us to handle. It devastates God, but as shown in the parable, God does not hesitate one bit when it comes to forgiveness. Every time I hear this song I am reminded of how great God’s love is. It doesn’t matter where you are with your faith, or what you’ve done, there is nothing you can do to make God stop loving you.

1. A monopoly is one seller without any competitors. What is a "monopsony"?

A monopsony is one buyer who faces many sellers. It is a state in which demand comes from only one source.

2. Define, in your own words, what a "production possibilities curve" is.

A production possibility curve is used to determine the amounts of two goods or services that an economy can produce by transferring resources from one good or service to the other.

4. A Lorenz curve shows the degree of inequality that exists in the distributions of two variables, and is often used to illustrate the extent that income or wealth are distributed unequally in a particular society. I believe that the Lorenz curve is very important but should not be a high priority for the government.

5. Look again at Figure A. What is the opportunity cost of shifting production from B to C?

350 cars were lost.

6. Review: explain again what AFC, AVC and ATC are, and how they relate to each other. When should a firm shut down in the short run?

AFC (Average Fixed Cost) is the total fixed costs divided by the quantity, AVC (Average Variable Cost) is the number of units produced and the ATC (Average Total Cost) are all of the costs added together. In the short run the firm should shut down when revenue falls below the ATC.

7. What is needed to reach point D in Figure A? (In other words, what causes a production possibilities curve to shift outward?)

When the overall number of workers or the investment capital increases, more can be produced.

1. In your own words, try to give a better definition of "externalities" than provided by this Lecture.

Externalities are costs or benefits that are not only applied towards the buyer and seller, but also towards those outside of the transaction.

2. Explain why marginal revenue must be zero when total revenue is maximized.

When the total revenue is at its highest it is not possible to increase it. Therefore marginal revenue must remain at zero.

3. What is your favorite question on the midterm exam that you answered incorrectly, and why is it your favorite?

Question 30 regarding cross-elasticity is the one I find most interesting. Cross-elasticity is a very difficult concept, yet it is an extremely important concept to know in Economics.

4. Give an example of a positive externality, and an example of a negative externality. The example does not have to be limited to a business.

One example could be living next to a high school which is planning on building a brand new stadium right next door. The negative side consists of constant noise, trash, and poor parking structure. The positive side of having the stadium next door is that when one would like to see a game, they can walk right over which takes transaction costs out of the mix. The public also has full access to the stadiums track, and field.

5. Explain why private firms in the free market are unlikely to try to provide public goods.

If private firms provide public good demand will decrease and the firm will lose money.

7. List the four factors of production and give a very brief explanation of each.

1. Land. (To build the firm on)
2. Capital. (Money)
3. Labor. (Employees)
4. Entrepreneurship. (Advertisement)

1. Identify the four elements of perfect competition.
1. Many buyers and sellers.
2. Goods and perfect substitutes for each other.
3. Perfect knowledge in the market.
4. Perfect mobility of resources.

2. Describe how you might use competition, perhaps even competing with yourself, to motivate you to achieve more.

For myself competition is very important. I am always striving to do my best, whether through sports or school. Competition gives me the motivation to work hard in order to succeed and do the best I can do.

3. I don’t completely understand the concept of the short run and long run.

4. Do you think the converse of Gresham's Law is true with respect to speech and conversation, such that good speech or conversation (such as discussing the Bible) drives out bad? Explain.
Yes, definitely. People tend to conform to the ways of their surroundings. For instance if someone is using foul language around a person who uses none, they are most likely going to feel uncomfortable and realize that there is no need for that type of speech, leading them to then think before they speak.

5. Explain the difference between total cost, average cost, and marginal cost.
The total cost is the overall price. The average cost is the cost per unit, and the marginal cost is the cost of one additional unit.

6. Suppose you decide you could profitably set the price for a homeschool dance at $15 per ticket, and it would have attracted 150 people. You also determine that 50 out of the 150 people who would have attended would have paid $20 per ticket and 10 out of the 150 would have paid $25 per ticket, and 5 out of the 150 would have paid $30 per ticket, because they would have enjoyed and benefited so much from it. However, the homeschool dance was never held because no one "got around to it." What is the loss in wealth or consumer surplus due to the fact that the event was not held? 50x$5=$250. 10x$10=$100. 5x$15=$75. The total surplus is $425.00.

AmandaS.

1.	Fixed costs can be easily identified by seeing what the total costs are when output is _______. Separately, give an example of a variable cost.

Fixed costs can be easily identified by seeing what the total costs are when output is zero.
Variable costs include labor expenses and raw material costs, an employee could be an example of this.

2. The Lecture mentioned how a prior student in this course is paying her way through college by working as a waitress in a fancy Manhattan restaurant. Suppose her boss told her one day, "We were profitable last month. To increase our profits next month, I'm going to double our number of waitresses so that we can serve more people!" But our former economics student told him that his plan would fail because there is _____________ returns of scale in the restaurant, because more waitresses would result in more wasted time talking to each other and waitresses getting in the way of each other.

Diminishing marginal returns, which is when the marginal product of labor is less than the average product of labor.

3. Give an example of a "short run" cost for a firm, and give an example of a "long run" cost. This can refer to any type of firm, from a grocery store to a baseball team to a homeschool.

A short run cost is a short period of time when a company can only make temporary changes. A long run is a longer period of time with more permanent changes. An example of this could be the drug Tamiflu. When flu season comes around pharmaceutical companies have higher demand and therefore they need to produce more of this drug. In order to do so they might need to hire more employees to help supply the drug in order for supply to meet demand. The long run would be buying more permanent things such as machinery, bigger buildings, etc.

4. Suppose you own a mechanics' shop that fixes cars, and you have 4 employees whom you pay $12 per hour. On average your 4th employee can fix 3 cars an hour. What is your marginal product (MP) and marginal cost (MC), and what is the minimum on average that you need to charge customers (your marginal revenue) for fixing cars? (Assume your only cost is labor, and the customer pays the cost of any parts.)

Marginal product equals $3. Marginal Cost equals $4, and the Marginal Revenue is also $4.00.

5. Earlier in this course we learned that someone who obtains a college degree earns, over the course of his life, about $500,000 more than someone who does not. How can you explain this fact in terms of the advantages of "long run" costs over "short run" costs?

Getting a college degree can help in many ways. First and foremost it gives you a better understanding of things going on within the world, and also gives you a better chance of qualifying for a higher paying job. The long run ends up being better.

7. Suppose you own and drive a taxicab, and its annual license fee is $1000 per year. Suppose you learn that the license fee will increase to $1200 next year. Does this increase either increase, decrease, or have no effect on (a) marginal cost, (b) average variable cost, and (c) average total cost?
The marginal cost has no effect. The average total cost increases. The average variable cost stays the same.

8. Suppose you could earn $8 an hour. Instead, you watch television for an hour. What is your accounting profit or loss, and what is your economic profit or loss, for that hour?

The accounting loss would be $0. The economic loss is $8.00. Instead of wasting an hour watching TV, you could be doing something much more efficient.

1. Define, in your own words, economic “efficiency”. Use it in an example sentence.
Efficiency is a term used for avoiding wasted time, effort, and money. When someone uses the term “efficient” they are most likely referring to how well a task was completed in such a short manner of time. An example could be something as simple as one of your parents asking you to do something. Instead of wasting time arguing, doing it right away and getting it over with would be much more efficient.

2. Suppose the cross elasticity of demand for goods A and B is +3.8, and for goods X and Y is -2.7. What can you conclude about the relationship of the goods A and B, and of X and Y?
Since A and B are positive they are substitutes. X and Y are negative, therefore they are complements.

3. Suppose it costs you $500 to make your first 5 units, then $200 to make your next 5 units, and then $100 to make your next 5 units. Costs do not decrease further for you. What is the marginal cost for you to make another unit?:

The marginal cost would be $20.00.

4. Suppose your annual income increases from $20,000 to $25,000. Suppose your demand for steak increases by 10% and your demand for fast food hamburgers decreases by 5%. Which type of goods are steak, and which type are hamburgers?

Steak would be a normal good since the demand increased. The hamburger is an inferior good due to the decrease in demand.

5. What is the basic assumption of the Coase theorem, and why is that assumption so important to the result of the theorem? :

The Coase Theorem is based off of two main ideas, freedom of individual choice and zero transaction costs. The Theorem implies that society would be much better off with lower transaction costs and that efficiency and prosperity can be obtained by reducing or eliminating them all together.

6. What does an owner do when his marginal revenue exceeds his marginal cost? Explain.

Marginal cost is the additional cost to produce one more unit, and includes only the additional cost. Marginal Revenue is the extra revenue that an additional unit of product will bring. As long as the marginal revenue is larger than the marginal cost the owner will want to sell many units, because once the revenue falls below the cost he will start losing money.

7. What does the Coase theorem say about the desirability, and the effect, of government regulations that increase transaction costs? The Coase Theorem states that it would be best if the government cut out transaction costs all together, due to the efficiency that is lost when the transaction costs increase.

'''AmandaS.'''

'''1. Give an example of a good that has a large price elasticity, meaning that a small decrease in price causes a big increase in demand.''' Reality is a good example of this. Traditionally when home prices fall, demand goes up. If the price is too high for a house, people are most likely going to walk away whether the quantity is good or not. Right now the Market is sitting still due to the banking credit restrictions.

'''2. Explain the concept of income elasticity.'''
Income elasticity is a measure of the relationship between a change in income and a change in quantity of a good demanded. When you have less income you tend to consume less. The luxury goods, such as nice cars, designer clothing and going to expensive restaurants are not done when income decreases.

'''3. A nearly perfectly elastic demand curve is nearly ________ in shape; a nearly perfectly inelastic demand curve is nearly __________ in shape.'''
A) A flat vertical line.
B) A flat horizontal line.

'''4. Why is the name "necessity" given to a good that has a price elasticity of less than one, and the name "luxury" given to a good that has a price elasticity of more than one?:'''
A necessity is considered income elasticity because it is something that is needed, whether income is high or low. A luxury good is not a needed necessity therefore it is not purchased as often if the income is low.

'''5. What is a substitute for french fries, and what is a complement for them?''' A substitute for french fries could be onion rings. A complement could be many things, hamburger, ketchup, hotdog, chicken tenders and much more.

'''6. Give an example of a "normal" good, and an example of an "inferior" good'''.
A normal good is purchased when income is high. An example of a normal good is an electronic device such as an iPod. IPods are very expensive, yet many people want them. An inferior good is something that is needed by almost everyone, such as gasoline.

'''7. A "price ceiling" is a type of price control that sets the maximum price allowed by law for something (like a real ceiling). A "price floor" is a type of price control that sets a minimum price allowed by law for something (like a real floor). Does a price ceiling that is set below the equilibrium (free market) price cause a surplus or a shortage? Using the graph in this lecture, explain why a surplus or a shortage is created by a price ceiling.'''
A price ceiling limit on how high a price can be charged on a product. This will most like cause a shortage because the demand will exceed the supply.

1. The supply of a good, and the demand for that good, determine both the ______ and ______ at which the good is sold (assuming it is a free market).:

The supply of a good, and the demand for that good, determine both the '''quantity''' and '''price''' at which the good is sold.

2. Suppose the price demand curve for a particular good is P = $30 - Q, where P is the price and Q is the quantity. Also suppose the price supply curve is P = $6 + Q. At which price and quantity will the good be sold (assuming a free market)?: '''P=$18, Q=$12'''

3. When the supply of a good or service increases, such as increasing the number of oil wells, what happens to the market price of oil? Explain. When the demand for a good a good or service increases, such more people driving cars that need gasoline (refined oil), what happens to the market price of oil? Explain.

When the supply of a good or service increases, the price will decrease. If there was plenty of oil, it would not be considered scarce and the value of it would go down. When the demand for a good increases, such as more people driving cars that need gasoline, the price increases because of the quantity needed. When the world is in need of something the price goes up, especially if the item is considered to be scarcer then others.

4. Why do grocery stores lower the price of their fruit (such as grapes) when they have an oversupply of ripened fruit? Explain by citing the downward slope of a demand curve, and describe what happens to this fruit after the grocery store lowers its price.

If the price is too high for a certain item, the public will not buy as much, which means the grocery store will end up coming out with an oversupply of the product. If the store lowers the price of the item, the chances of more people buying it increases by a great amount and the store will sell a lot more. However, if the price is too low, that can hurt the store as well. The store might have sold all the fruit but made less money then needed since the price was below what the item is actually worth.

5. When the New York Yankees built their new $1.5 billion ballpark, they made a decision about how many "obstructed view" bleacher seats to include. Due to the design of this new stadium, people sitting in these bleacher seats could not see all of the field because part of the stadium structure blocks part of their view. Here is what the supply and demand are for those obstructed-view seats: Quantity of "Obstructed-View" Tickets Demand Price/Ticket Supply Price/Ticket 300 $10 $3 600 $5 $5 900 $3 $7 1000 $2 $9:

A) How many "obstructed view" bleacher seats did the New York Yankees build, based on the above data, and how much does the team make from sales of these tickets at each game?: The stadium built 600 obstructed-view seats, and make approximately $3,000 per game.

B) Suppose the City of New York passed a law for a maximum price (a "price control") of $2 per "obstructed view" bleacher ticket. Will the obstructed-view seats sell out under this law, and will people have to wait in line in order to buy them? Would you oppose or support such a law, and why?: I would oppose this law. The tickets would sell out immediately and the lines would be ridiculously long in order to see a baseball game. This law would interfere with the free market, and supply would no longer meet demand.

6. "Time is money." Explain. Or, as an alternative, improve on our definition of a "free market." Or, as a third alternative, explain how the free market is so much powerful than even the wealthiest people in the world.
The phrase “Time Is Money” was recited by Benjamin Franklin in 1748. Ever since it has been a popular concept that Americans use and hear daily. This statement refers to wasted time as wasted money. If one sits around doing nothing when he could be out in the world making money he is wasting his time which leads to a result of wasted money. As Benjamin Franklin says, “He that can earn ten shillings a day by his labor, and goes abroad, or sits idle, one half of that day, though he spends but sixpence during his diversion or idleness, ought not to reckon that the only expense; he has really spent, or rather thrown away, five shillings. Remember, Time Is Money”.

7. Explain why waiting lists develop in countries (like Canada and England) where the government prohibits anyone from charging more than fixed prices for medical services, assuming that these fixed prices are lower than what the prices would be under supply and demand in the free market. (Hint: the reason is related to the effect of price controls on the supply of a good or service.):

Waiting lists develop because there is a higher demand then supply. There are more people needing to be treated than doctors to treat them. The government pays for all health care, and bureaucrats put limits on spending in order to control costs. They determine how much doctors can be reimbursed and put caps on the amount of money that can be spent on treatments. Many people say “when the government takes over you may not get the care and breakthroughs you need to save your life.”

'''AmandaS.'''

Scarcity refers to anything that is not free. It is something one wants rather than needs. Diamonds are very scarce, or any kind of rare gem. Since diamonds are so difficult to find they are very rare, which makes the value of them go up even more.
The Invisible hand is an unseen movement that guides and motivates people to work hard in order to benefit themselves and society. It is the force that guides people to do the work that is needed in order to improve society. The invisible hand represents all the social good incidentally caused by individuals pursuing their own self-interest. An example can be something as simple as a book. In order to make a book you have to have all the basic supplies, such as the paper, the ink, the author, and the publisher. What is a book if there is no writing in it? The author creates the story, then uses the ink and paper to write it down. A publisher then comes in and makes it possible for society to read it. Pick one of these parables and explain both the economic point and the deeper spiritual point. Extra credit: why might the Gospel of Matthew have more economic parables than the Gospel of Mark does?:''' Mark 12:42-44 is said to be the only parable in Mark where Jesus uses an economical point using money. The parable is teaching us to give everything we have to the Lord and to put all of our trust in him, which most of us today are not willing to do. When Jesus was sitting near the Money Box in the Temple he watched people continuously put money in and saw many wealthy people give large sums of money. A poor widow then came along and put in two small copper coins which were only worth a few cents. Jesus then called out to his followers saying, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow gave more than all those rich people. They gave only what they did not need. This woman is very poor, but she gave all she had; she gave all she had to live on." I think that the Economical point to this story is showing how a woman who had only a few coins gave them all away trusting God with her needs. These coins were something she greatly valued since they were very scarce for her. She did not have many and she gave them all to God. Today, many people are like the rich people Jesus uses in the parable. We all need money to live, but there is always something we can give up. People are very selfish with their money, especially when it affects their own personal needs. Often times we are not willing to give any money away, if it means sacrificing something of our own.
'''1. World War II: when, where, who and why? Explain.'''
World War II, the Second World War was a military conflict which involved the majority of the World. There were two opposing military alliances in World War II, the Allies, and Axis. The Allies contained the British Empire, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and the United States. The three major powers in the Axies were Germany, Italy, and Japan. The war began when Germany invaded Poland in 1939 and continued until 1945 when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
'''2. Compare and contrast communism and fascism, with at least two examples of how they are similar and two examples of how they differ.'''
Communism and fascism differ in multiple ways. Many say that they are opposites because they have very few things in common. Some of the differences between the two are wealth and social classes. Communism hated wealth and opposed different social classes, whereas fascism encouraged social classes and the creation of wealth thinking it would make the nation stronger. There aren’t many similarities between communism and fascism except that both used a dictator and demanded complete allegiance to the state ruler, rather than to God, and both had a disdain for individual freedom and human rights.

'''3. Why do you think Hitler and his supporters killed so many people? Explain.'''
Hitler was a very evil man who craved power. In 1934 Hitler began killing hundreds of Germans who had opposed him, and he was completely against the Jews, blaming them for all of Germany’s problems. In 1938 the Nazis conducted a massive pogrom in a thousand German towns that attacked Jewish people in their homes and destroyed their businesses. Hitler was so eager to have power that he destroyed anything that got in his way.

'''4. Discuss the effect of communism spreading to China.'''
The rise of communism in China was led by a man named Mao Zedong. Communism was not a good thing for China. Many people lost land and Mao forced peasants to work on farms for many years. Once Mao implemented the “Great Leap Forward” which was where he established large collective farms composed of 25,000 people working on thousands of acres per farm, people started working less and less because they had no initiative to work, due to living in communal housing.

'''5. Describe any aspect of the Cold War or the Korean War or the Spanish Civil War (with reference to Orwell, if you like).''' The Cold War took place after World War II and ended in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. It received its name because no shots were fired between the two large nations. The war began because of the hostility between communism and capitalism, the United States and the Soviet Union.

'''6. How did technological advances or insights help the Allied forces? Be specific.''' Technological advances helped the Allies win World War II. The American General George Patton had perfected the art of lightning-fast tank maneuvers and unrestrained aggression, and was greatly feared by the Germans. I think that because of his talent the Allies had a much better chance of winning, and without him they may not have been able to win the war.

'''7. Should the United States have entered World War II in Europe? Discuss.'''
I think that the United States did the right thing by entering World War II. Germany wanted power so bad that they kept conquering many nations, and they would have kept fighting to win more. The United States might have been one of the only chances the world had to defeat Germany, because it was considered to be one of the largest and strongest countries in the world.

1. What was the "Great War," and why was it called that? Who was on each side? The Great War is often known as “World War One”. It was the first global war in history and was the first to use aircraft. There were two sides fighting against each other, the side of the Central Powers were Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. The other side was the Allies of Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan and later on the United States.

2. Who won World War I? Explain the outcome:
The Allies (Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and United States) won World War I.

The outcome of World War I was not the best. Millions of people died during it and many soldiers lost their lives due to the “Spanish flu”. This war ended up not doing much good and helped initiate a war 20 years later.

3. Pick your favorite battle of the War and describe it:
The Third Battle of Ypres, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele took place in 1917. The British hid 19 huge land mines underneath the German lines southeast of Ypres, Belgium for 18 months, hoping to damage the German culture severely. At first the strategy had been a success, causing the Germans great confusion and disorganization, but the British did not pursue the Germans as quickly as they should have and rain drenched the area. The British force was then stuck in a mountain of mud, and this Allied plan was a failure.

4. When, where, why, and by whom did the Communist Revolution occur? Communism took place in Russia around the time of World War One, in 1917. The revolution was inspired by the ideas of Marxism aiming to replace capitalism with communism. Vladimir Lenin also took part in the revolution he brought about Leninism which argues that a communist revolution must be led by a vanguard of professional revolutionaries, which is men and women who are fully dedicated to the communist cause and who can then form the nucleus of the revolutionary movement.

5. Pick an aspect of "Science and Art in the Early 20th Century" and describe it, along with your view: In the early 20th century the “Big Bang Theory” was proposed by a Belgian Catholic priest, Georges-Henri Lemaître. He believed that the universe began with a massive explosion. Many made fun of the theory due to its name, but later on in 1929, Edward Hubble, a devout Christian found evidence supporting this theory. I think the “Big Bang” is ridiculous. I believe the universe was created by God and God only.

6. Describe a European colony in the 20th century, and what happened to it: During World War I, India was looking for independence but the British did not grant India its independence directly after the war, as many Indians had hoped for and the British had no intentions of ever doing so. It wasn’t until Mohandas K. Ghandi came along that India was able to receive its independence.

7. Current events question: Do you think our economic problems today are -- or are not -- similar to the Great Depression? Explain by including some history about the Great Depression. The Great Depression took place during the mid 1900’s. It was an awful time and helps remind people today of how far the world’s economy can fall. The Great Depression dealt with the stock markets crashing, and the result of many people losing their jobs. Today’s society is not as bad as the Great Depression was. I believe that we are on our way to something much similar to the Depression, but that we are not there yet.

The Industrial Revolution was a time in history where fundamental changes occurred in agriculture, textile and metal manufacture, transportation, economic policies and the social structure in England. In 1760 the Revolution had fully begun and lasted until 1840.

2. Pick your two favorite scientists or mathematicians from the 1800s and explain what you like about them: My favorite mathematician is Bernhard Riemann. As a teenager he was sent to a german school and was put in an advanced math class, which he greatly succeeded in. Since Riemann found the class so easy the principle gave him a book that was so complex it was considered the most difficult math book in the world. Riemann used his knowledge to overcome that book and later on developed a new type of geometry that became useful in the 20th century, and is still taught today.

Thomas Edison is my favorite scientist due to the fact of his determination when it came to creating something he believed so strongly in. Edison had many obstacles in his way, including not being able to hear, yet it was he who invented some of the greatest inventions in the world. Edison is greatly admired by many because he is such an inspiration when it comes to not letting anything stand in the way of what you believe.

3. Do you think the Industrial Revolution was good or bad, and why? The Industrial Revolution was both good and bad in ways. The areas of the world who participated in the industrialization grew closer together, and global interaction increased. During this time the middle class greatly increased and many became interested in politics, which led to reforms and new policies. The Revolution also had some negative effects, during this time child labor greatly increased and many families were having to live in small and cramped apartments which were often unsanitary and burned down. I think the revolution did more good things then bad though, therefore I think it was a good thing it happened.

4. Give an example of nationalism from the lecture, with dates: Nationalism is a concept that arose in the 19th century. Nationalists believed that one of the most important things was loyalty to one's nation, and that a society should be viewed as a whole rather than being made up of individuals. Nationalism inspired unification in Germany and Italy where only loose connections had existed before.

5. What is imperialism? Describe the four patterns of imperialism:
Imperialism is when a nation tries to control or heavily influence other people in a different place, and makes the bigger nation feel more powerful and influential. There are four patterns of imperialism:

1. To establish colonies, like the British colonies in America, where the European power had direct influence or control over the colonies

2. Establish protectorates, whereby the region has its own government and is an independent country, but is protected by a larger country.

3. “Spheres of influence,” in which the European country had special trading privileges over the region.

4. “Economic imperialism,” whereby the outside influence was exerted not by a country but by a private business over a region.

6. Describe an aspect of Africa in the 1800s, such as an example of imperialism: Imperialism in Africa could be viewed as being both good or bad. Imperialism brought advances in technology, built hospitals, and improved the infrastructure, such as railroads, telephones, telegraphs, sanitation and other public works, which improved trade and communications, and reduced disease. During this time Literacy improved, and Christianity flourished. Not everything about imperialism was good though, Europeans displaced Africans from their individual farms and shifted them into working for European businesses, which caused Africans to lose control of their land. Europeans also completely disrupted African cultural groups and village life.

7. Pick any aspect of Asian history in the 1800s and describe and discuss it: Utilitarianism is a moral philosophy which calls for actions to be judged on their usefulness to society or select individuals. I think Utilitarianism is an awful thing, it can be unfair in many ways. According to Jeremy Bentham, Utilitarianism is to measure the pleasure of certain actions against the pleasure of other actions. But who are we to decide what is pleasurable to one over the pleasure of another, or how this would affect the usefuleness in society or to individuals. In my opinion these are things that should be left to God and his judgement rather then mans selfish desire.

2. Religious wars in England: its loss, America's gain. Explain: The European countries believed in what is called the “Divine Right of Kings”, which is a political and religious doctrine that states that all authority a king has is provided by God. In England, there is the constitutional monarchy which requires the king to share his power with parliament, and also requires him to obey the law just like everyone else. The monarchy caused many conflicts in England, a lot of them dealing with religion. There were many disagreements between the Church of England, the Puritans, the Quakers, and other Christian faiths. The conflicts were so big that people were fleeing to the new colonies in America to establish religious communities free from persecution.
3. The French Revolution: all bad, or was there something good about it?: The French Revolution was a frightening time in France. During this time taxes were raised and riots started all throughout France. Peasants were infuriated by this that they starting burning down wealthy homes, and storming through the large Paris prison, freeing the inmates. It was a very violent and chaotic time for France and is known as the “Reign of Terror”. Historians credit the Revolution by saying it spread the idea of the Enlightenment, limited the power of nobility and clergy, and ended an absolute monarchy, while others are horrified to where it led. I really don’t think there was anything good that came from it.

4. Pick another revolution and describe it: In 1791 an African priest sparked an uprising of 100,000 slaves led by Toussaint L’Ouverture, which started the Haitian Revolution. The French troops arrived in 1802 with hopes to abolish the revolution, and succeeded. They tricked L’Ouverture onto a ship leading him to believe he would be signing a peace treaty granting the colony independence from France but instead was taken captive and was thrown into a French prison where he died a year later. Later on Dessalines, a general under L’Ouverture continued the fight for freedom which L’Ouverture had begun, and in 1804 Haiti was granted its independence.
H2. Napoleon's Empire: write about any aspect of it that interests you: The thing I find most interesting about Napoleons Empire is the Napoleonic Code. The Napoleonic Code is a French civil code established in 1804. The Code was a successful system of laws that strongly influenced the laws of many other countries. Many view this code as being one of the few documents which have influenced the whole world.

1. Approximately when and where did the Renaissance occur? The Renaissance was a period of time throughout the Middle Ages which lasted from the1300’s to the 1600s. The Renaissance is known as a culture rebirth that began in Florence, Italy and spread all throughout Europe.

2. Martin Luther: who was he, what did he do, and when did he do it?: In the year of 1505 a young man named Martin Luther was stranded outside in a violent thunderstorm. Terrified Luther cried out that if he survived he would promise to quit law school and instead join an Augustinian monastery. Martin Luther did survive that storm and did exactly what he had promised to do. Later on in 1517 Luther founded Protestantism, which is a movement within Christianity, by nailing 95 “Theses” to the door of his Wittenberg Church in what is today Germany.

3. What was the Baroque style, and what was its motivation? The Baroque style began to take place after the Reformation in Germany. Its main goal was to appeal spiritually to the audience, and to make inroads into the protestant regions. Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Peter Paul Rubens were artists who are known for using this style frequently. The Baroque style was also used by a famous artist, Annibale Carracci, who used the “revolutionary” technique of shadows and emotion to display the surprise reaction of the holy woman who visited the tomb of Jesus on Resurrection Sunday.

4. Summarize the history of the English language: The English language is divided into three different periods. Old English which is almost completely different then what we speak in today’s society, Middle English and Modern English. Modern English is what is used today. Old English was used until the Norman conquest of 1066, when Latin began to cause improvements in Old English. The language then changed to Middle English, which lasted until Modern English begun shortly after the end of the Middle Ages in 1500.

5. Chinese dynasties (any one or all), Vietnam, Korea and Cambodia: take your pick and write about one: In A.D. 939 after the fall of the Tang dynasty Vietnam won its independence. The Vietnamese are known for the capability of being able to fight. In the late 1200s they defeated three attempts by the Mongols to conquer Hanoi. Today the population in Vietnam is roughly about 84 million.

6. Why did the Renaissance occur in Europe, and not in other areas of the world, such as Asia?: The Renaissance was led by a devout Christian who looked only to Jesus for inspiration. Not one leading Renaissance artist or writer was anything other then Christian. The reason it occurred in Europe was due to the fact that Asia was not a country that was open to the Christian faith and that Asia was experiencing many conflicts at the time.

H6. Chivalry, revisited: write about any aspect of this issue that you like: Chivalry is something that is not seen often in society today. But are we supposed to blame the lack of this quality all on the boys? I don’t think so. I think one reason chivalry is missing from our society today is partially due to girls. So many girls and women think that when guys open doors for us and pull out our chair before we sit, it is saying that we as woman are incapable of doing things for ourselves. Therefore we let our pride get in the way of the respect they are trying to show us. Females need to put their feminism views behind them and allow men to respect and cherish us through their gentlemanly ways. So we shouldn’t put all the blame on the boys for lack of chivalry, but instead show them our appreciation when they do show it. I think this would encourage guys to be more chivalrous and gentleman like.

'''1. Identify the time period of the Middle Ages, and when the Crusades occurred within that period:''' The Middle Ages lasted from A.D. 500-1500. The Crusades were a series of wars which lasted almost 200 years, from A.D. 1096-1291. During this time only two of the Crusades were successful, the First one which was an immense success and the Third Crusade which was not as successful as the First but not a failure like the others.

'''2. Who conquered the largest contiguous region in world history, and when?:''' Chinggis Khan, also known as Genghis Khan lived from 1162-1227 and was considered a military genius. Khan always dreamed of creating the biggest empire in world history, and he followed through with his dream and succeeded. Khan led the Mongols from 1206-1227 and it was he who conquered the largest contiguous empire in world history.

'''3. Which of these modern countries were able to establish nation-states in the Middle Ages, and which were not: Germany, France, England and Italy?:''' Unlike France and England, Germany and Italy were not a success when it came to establishing nation-states in the Middle Ages. Otto I “the Great” tried to form a nation-state in Germany, he allied himself with the pope and attempted to establish a “Holy Roman Empire”. All of his attempts toward this were not a success and failed. Italy failed to emerge, and many fights broke out between city-states which lasted for centuries.

'''4. Pick your favorite medieval architecture and describe something about it:''' Back in the Middle Ages the architecture was astounding. There were two main styles, Romanesque which appeared more throughout the early years, and the Gothic design which became more popular throughout time. Both are extremely pretty, and very unique. My favorite would be the Gothic design though, just because of the windows. The Romanesque had small windows where as the Gothic had large windows to let natural light in.

'''5. Pick one of the African kingdoms described in the lecture, and explain it:''' The Kingdom of Aksum is located in present-day Ethiopia. This Kingdom traced it roots of Aksum to the migration of Arabs across the Red Sea into Africa in 1000 B.C. The Kingdom of Aksum established a language called “Ge’ez” which was a Semitic language that used Arabic characters, and controlled the southwestern portion of the Arabian Peninsula. The ruler of this kingdom was Ezrana. Ezrana was a great ruler who conquered Kush and completely destroyed the city of Meroe. Later on Ezrana converted to Christianity and a Coptic Church formed in the kingdom. Aksum is most known for developing a coin currency and its architectural style, “stele”. This kingdom lasted until A.D. 700 when the Muslims came in and destroyed Adulis, which was a big trading city, and conquered the Kingdom of Aksum.

'''6. Pick your favorite aspect of Scholasticism, and describe something about it, or your view of it:''' Scholasticism was both a method and system which aimed to reconcile the Christian Theology. I think Scholasticism was a good idea, many people are confused about the Christian faith and don’t know what to make of it, they often think that it is impossible. Scholasticism shows that there are ways for it to be possible by using reason. One of the main reasons that people believe God in non-existent is because they think it cannot be proved, but Scholasticism provides a method to help prove that there is in fact a God.

'''7. Current events: What was the biggest effect of the Crusades in the Middle Ages, and why do people avoid using the term "Crusade" today?:''' The Crusades were a series of wars that covered almost 200 years of history. Many of the Crusades were not a success, in fact only two were successful and the rest failed. The purpose of the Crusades was to make Jerusalem a safe place for Christian pilgrimages. People today have different views on the Crusades. Some people, mainly Christians are in complete agreement with them and even compare them to the United States’ invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. Yet others completely avoid the comparison between the two because the Crusades remain a controversial issue, mainly by opponents of Christianity who claim that it was unjust violence by Christians.

The Sunnis and Shiites clash with each other in many ways, even to this day. The Sunnis are viewed to be more moderate and friendlier to western countries like the United States where as the Shiites are more hostile towards the western countries. The Sunnis are Arab and have ruled countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq, while the Shiites have majorities in Iraq and Iran.
It’s interesting how much the population can change in different areas. The Muslim population is much stronger in Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq then it is in the Western countries such as the US whose main branch of religion is Christianity.
In the 800s Maya civilizations were abandoned and by the mid 900s the civilization had disintegrated and was nothing but a shadow of what it used to be.

'''-The Aztecs''' (A.D. 1200-1521): The Aztecs are known for adopting many of the legends, ballgames, calendar, and customs of their ancestors. The Aztecs were not as advance in knowledge and civilization, and were also more warlike then others.

'''-The Toltecs''' (A.D. 900-1200): The Toltecs were a northern Mexican nomadic tribe that ruled about 50 miles north of present-day Mexico City, in a city called Tula. The Toltecs were a tribe who helped fight and conquer the city of Teotihuacan in the 8th century. It is said that the Toltecs were “living by the sword” which put them at risk to also be conquered by that sword.

-The Toltecs (A.D. 900-1200): The Toltecs were a northern Mexican nomadic tribe that ruled about 50 miles north of present-day Mexico City, in a city called Tula. The Toltecs were a tribe who helped fight and conquer the city of Teotihuacan in the 8th century.
'''1. List the "Five Pillars of Islam.":''' The Five Pillars of Islam are:
'''Submission''' is to one God, Allah.
'''Prayer''' is to Allah five times a day while facing Mecca.
'''Fasting''' for the entire month of Ramadan, where no food is allowed to be eaten during daylight hours.
'''Almsgiving:''' Muslims must donate to the poor.
The Hajj or '''pilgrimage''' is made at least once during a Muslims lifetime to Mecca.

'''2. How is Islam different from Christianity?:''' Islam and Christianity have extremely different viewpoints in addition to religious beliefs. Islam follows a set of commands known as the “Five Pillars of Islam” which are set forth in the Koran. Christianity follows the Bible, and bases life upon the Ten Commandments just as God has instructed for us to do.

'''3. Charles the Hammer, Pepin the Short, and Charlemagne:''' which one is your favorite, and why?: Charlemagne is definitely my favorite out of the three. He was such a great leader and did many good things, such as educating children in palace schools. He also conquered Italy and was crowned "Holy Roman Emperor" by Pope Leo III. The reason I like Charlemagne was because he was a dedicated and well-educated Christian, and was one of the greatest leaders out of all.

'''H3. What is your view of "chivalry"?:''' I think chivalry is a very good thing but can often times be misused. When someone is being chivalrous, the other person needs to respect that and be the same way back. For instance if a boy opens the door for a girl but the girl just walks right in without saying anything she is not being chivalrous back and is abusing the fact that the boy was trying to be polite.

'''5. Explain the difference between the Sunnis and the Shiites, and give examples of one country controlled by each:''' The Sunnis and the Shiites are the two major branches of religion in Islam. Around A.D. 660 a schism occurred between the two groups on who should be the successor to Muhammad, and the Shiites chose Ali, Muhammad’s son-in-law.

'''6. Current events: Comment on the table of Islamic populations by country. Do you notice anything interesting about it?:''' In Saudi Arabia the Muslim Population is 100% where as the United States has about 1.4%. It’s interesting how much the population can change in different areas. The Muslim population is much stronger in Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq then it is in the Western countries such as the US whose main branch of religion is Christianity.

'''7. Briefly describe four major civilizations or tribes in South America, as discussed in the lecture:'''

-The Teotihuacan (A.D. 100-900): The Teotihuacan civilization followed the Olmec civilization in Mesoamerica. It became a large city with a total of 200,000 people. They worshipped gods and goddesses, and most people lived in barrios around the city.

-The Maya (A.D. 300-900): The civilization of the Maya in Central America was located on the Yucatan peninsula, which population was about 5-16 million people. The tribe had much knowledge on things such as, mathematics, astronomy, entertainment, and the use of their own pictographic language. No one knows why the Maya civilization came to an end. In the 800s Maya civilizations were abandoned and by the mid 900s the civilization had disintegrated and was nothing but a shadow of what it used to be.

-The Aztecs (A.D. 1200-1521): The Aztecs are known for adopting many of the legends, ballgames, calendar, and customs of their ancestors. The Aztecs were not as advance in knowledge and civilization, and were also more warlike then others.

'''1. Who is your favorite Roman emperor, and why?:''' My favorite Roman emperor is Marcus Aurelius. Unlike previous emperors, Aurelius was compassionate and cared for the weak and less fortunate.

'''2. Describe what the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire were, including approximate dates:'''
The Roman Republic was established in 509 B.C. and began with the overthrow of the Roman monarchy. The Roman Republic was formed to be a country without a King or an Emperor.

The Roman Empire was the post-Republican phase of the ancient Roman civilization, it lasted from 27 B.C. to A.D. 476. The Roman Empire received its name from the western capital, Rome, which was the first city of the empire.

'''3. Compare and contrast the Roman Empire in the West with the Byzantine Empire:'''
There are many similarities between the two empires, for example, both Empires were ruled by one man and both empires were looking to expand their power by continuously conquering land. Of course they both had their differences as well. The main language of the Roman Empire was Latin where as the Byzantine Empires main language was Greek.

'''4. Comment on the significance of the Roman language, Latin:'''
Roman law and Roman legions are two things that made the Roman Empire such a success, the third thing is the Language, Latin. Latin was a very important part of the Roman Empire. It became an effective means of communicating and was very powerful. Some of the Latin phrases are still used today.

'''5. Explain what Pax Romana was:'''
Pax Romana lasted from 27 B.C. to A.D. 180. It was established by the Caesar Augustus and is sometimes called “Pax Augusta”. It was a period of peace, and in Latin it’s known as “the Roman peace”.

'''H6. Attila the Hun: discuss this remarkable person.'''
Attila the Hun was leader of the Huns from 434 until his death in 453. Attila was one of the bravest leaders. He invaded the Balkans twice and marched through Gaul as far as Orleans before being defeated at the Battle of Chalons. Attila is known as being one of the most fearsome of the Western and Eastern Roman Empires enemies.

'''7. Challenging question (choose "a" or "b"):
(a) all of world history so far in this course can be attributed either to God paving the way for Jesus, or the devil creating obstacles for Him. Discuss:'''
I think that both have happened so far. But mainly from what I have seen, the devil has been creating many obstacles for him. The devil is the root of all evil and is constantly trying to tear us down. That’s where Jesus comes in. He is here to forgive us for all of our evil desires, which makes the devil irate. Therefore the devil is constantly finding obstacles to put in the way.

In India there are many different religious cultures, and the people have the freedom to believe what they want. Where as in China there is only one main religion and the people are expected to follow it or are otherwise persecuted.
4. What aspect or aspects of Hinduism have enabled it to survive for so long?: Hinduism is the oldest world religion, and is the most common religion in India. It worships a large number of gods many coming from other religions. The faith is very resilient to foreign beliefs, and the survival of Hinduism protected the Indian culture and way of life. I think the number of gods it worships has helped it last longer, other religions cannot come and accuse them of worshiping false gods because they are worshiping the same ones. Hinduism has been able to withstand both Islam and communism, and I think that’s one of the reasons why.
One of the reasons he was considered to be so great was because he never lost a single battle. I believe that Alexander had such great success because he was taught wisely and always thought things through before doing them.
The Greek developed a complete alphabet which led to great things such as the expression of powerful ideas. The political structure is the next great achievement of Greece. It was a democracy-based structure that ensured freedom and self government.
1. What is your favorite period of time in American history, and why?: My favorite period of history would probably be the gilded age. There were many inventions that had been created during that time and it was a major step of growth for America.

2. Contrast President Ronald Reagan with President Bill Clinton: Both presidents are extremely different. Ronald Reagan was an extremely good leader, which made him quite popular. Bill Clinton on the other hand, was a poor leader and never won even 50% of the vote.

3. What would you say is the most important trend or trends guiding American history?: I think that religion is the most important trend. The US has pretty much ruled out God in most things, such as public schools and even in the court houses. Im surprised God is still used in the pledge of allegiance. The government is trying to control and lead America instead of letting God take control.

4. What is the most important threat to the future of America? Cite history to support your view: Well i think that there have been many important threats. But the most current one that i can think of would be 9/11. I think that since it was so current Americans remember it better, and realize the danger that is within the world and how easily something like that can happen again and affect America and its future.

5. Do you see a connection between culture and success for a nation? Give an example from history (e.g., period of time) to support your view: I definitely see a connection. For example the 1920's. It was a time where people enjoyed themselves and spent their money carelessly not worrying about what the outcome could become, which was one of the reasons for the great depression.

6. Describe two of the greatest achievements of Ronald Reagan: Ronald Reagan had more then just two great achievements, so its hard to say which were the best. I think one of my favorites would be The Strategic Defense Initiative. It was setup in 1984 within the United States Department Of Defense. Another great achievement of his would be lowering taxes.
1. What is your favorite period of time in American history, and why?: My favorite period of history would probably be the gilded age. There were many inventions that had been created during that time and it was a major step of growth for America.

2. Both presidents are extremely different.

It was a time we're people enjoyed themselves and spent their money carelessly not worrying about what the outcome could become, which was one of the reasons for the great depression.

1. ''' Who were the main protagonists in the "Cold War", and what was the period of this "war"?:''' Our view of the main protagonists in the Cold War was the United States and the antagonist is the Soviet Union. This war lasted from about 1945-1991.

2. '''Identify the two wars that caused over 50,000 American deaths which occurred between 1945 and 1980, and briefly state your view of the American role in those wars. Do you agree with our acceptance of the outcomes?:'''
There are two wars that resulted in the killing of more than 50,000 americans between 1945 and 1980. The first war was the Korean war which lasted from 1950 to 1953, and approximately 54,000 Americans lost their lives during it. The other would be the Vietnam war, which took place when President Lyndon Johnson was president between 1959-1975. By the end of the Vietnam war, 58,000 soldiers had lost their lives. I think that the Korean War was handled fairly well, but I do not agree with the outcome of the Vietnam War, the US we should have been allowed fight back with the intentions of winning, instead due to a higher authority the US was not allowed to officially win the war and eventually had to resign because of the poor decisions being made by Johnson and Nixon

3. '''Pick an aspect of the Civil Rights Movement that impressed you most, and explain why.:'''
December 1st, 1955 African American, Rosa Parks sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott by refusing to give up her seat at the front of the bus in order to make room for a white person. By doing so Rosa Parks changed history by ending a segregation between the whites and blacks on buses. Rosa Parks really inspires me, she went against the government to fight for hers and other peoples rights. No one should be respected less because of the color of their skin, God made everyone equal and the segregation between the two was just wrong. Rosa Parks showed true courage just by not giving up a seat.

4. '''President Lyndon Johnson is known best for two things. Pick one and explain why, providing a specific example to support your answer:'''
President Lyndon Johnson became president in 1963 after the assassination of President Kennedy. Johnson was very attention seeking and did whatever it took to become more famous beyond the people of America, that includes starting a war. Apparently wars increase the popularity of a president which was what Johnson was looking for, so he decided to join the war with Vietnam and really had no intentions of officially winning it. The war did not go well President Johnson wanted to keep fighting instead of trying to end the war all together, so he made America drop continuos bombs on Northern Vietnam, which killed millions of people including our own soldiers from the US. In the 1970's the war finally came to an end on terms that caused America to pull out and let North Vietnam fall to the communists.

5. '''What do you like best about the 80th Congress? Explain.-'''I think the Taft-Hartley Act was one of the best things that happened in the 80th congress. This act established control of labor disputes and gave workers the right to not join the union if unwanted, where as before it was forced.

6. '''Who do you think was the most important person between 1945 and 1980 in American history, and why?:''' In my point of view their were many very important and influential people throughout this time so its hard to choose only one. But one of my favorites would be Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr is highly respected in the eyes of many, he is known for the speech he delivered in 1963 titled as, "I have a dream". It was an extremely inspiring speech and talked about his dream for a future where blacks and whites among others would coexist harmoniously as equals. He also founded the Southern Christian Leadership conference which had a large role in the American Civil Rights Movement.

7. '''Throughout the 1960s, what was the name used to describe the people in charge of the building pictured here, and describe their approach or ideology, mentioning at least one issue as an example:''' Throughout the 1960's the term that was used was the "Warren Court" which referred to Chief Justice Earl Warren. The Warren Court was an activist court, extending judicial powers into areas where it previously showed restraint. The Warren Court expanded the power of the Supreme Court and invented many new constitutional rights, and it also applied the Bill of Rights against the states even though it was intended to apply only to the Federal Government.
