General Howe's dog
The '''Battle of Germantown''' was an attack by the Colonial Army on British troops after the capture of Philadelphia in 1777 during the [[American Revolution]]. It took place shortly after the [[Battle of Brandywine]] and the [[Battle of Paoli]].
After the battle a dog was found roaming in the patriots' camp. The fox terrier was discovered to belong to General Howe and was cleaned, fed, and during a negotiated truce returned.<ref>[http://www.archives.nysed.gov/education/george-washington-letter-contrivance-conveying-intelligence-march George Washington Letter, "Contrivance for conveying Intelligence," March 15, 1777]</ref> General Washington had been missing his own dog at the time and understood the importance of that personal relationship.<ref>[https://nationalpurebreddogday.com/terrier-who-crossed-enemy-lines/ The Terrier Who Crossed Enemy Lines]</ref>
