Overview
Whoops Baghdad! was created as a follow-up to the highly-successful series Up Pompeii!, which ran between 1969 and 1970. Where Up Pompeii! had been set in pre-eruption Pompeii, so Whoops Baghdad! was set in Medieval Baghdad.
Production
The series was originally commissioned with the title of Up Baghdad!, but this was rejected in fear that it would be seen to be supporting the government of Iraq at that time. Howerd and a handful of cast members from Up Pompeii! were recruited to take part in the new series, with Howerd now appearing as the peasant Ali Upla, in a similar vein to his character of Lurcio from the previous series.
However, Whoops Baghdad! was not a success, and only one series of six episodes was made, which aired in 1973.
