Categories should be singular or plural?
"Musical instrument" or "Musical instruments?"
- Your work on categories is fantastic! I've been doing some also. By the way, some of these uncategorized entries are uncategorized because the entry should be deleted. Just let us know if you come across any of those.
- Offhand, I'd say "Greek History" with an uppercase "H", like "Ancient History". I don't know about the plural on the instrument and welcome others' thoughts.--Aschlafly 11:15, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
- Andy, there's been some discussion about the articles you mentioned. A category existed prior to my work called "articles proposed for deletion," and I've been adding my suggestions there. I've tried to refrain from political or emotional decisions, sticking instead to articles that seem pointless or hopelessly mangled.
- Thanks for your feedback on the capitalization issue, it's six of one and half-a-dozen of another to me... Aziraphale 11:35, 18 July 2007 (EDT) <-clearly not a baker...
Categories with more than one word - capitalize all, or only where appropriate?
"United States," not "United states," sure.
"Greek history" or "Greek History?"
"Categories should be upper cased. Always! United States Law, not United States law. At least here in the United States, that is proper." (so sayeth TK)
I'll be happy to work with this. I don't know that it's a fundamental American rule, though. :) Aziraphale 10:26, 2 August 2007 (EDT) <-can see by the dawn's early light...
Your questions regarding categorisation
I believe that articles (other than proper nouns) should be in lower case, as it makes for easier linking. The same benefit doesn't apply for categories, but for consistency with article names, I'd go for lower case.
As far as plural vs. singular goes, I've wondered about this myself. What you could do is have a look on Wikipedia, not to see what they do, but to find where they've (probably) discussed this issue there and see what the pro and con reasons are.

- Yes, look, and do exactly the opposite here! I think we have discussed this more than enough over the months, and Andy's suggestion seems to fit with most user's ideas. Philip, we need to do what is familair to most US users, non-technical ones. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 20:34, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
- Wait, I'm confused. Do most users feel all-caps for categories is preferred? There's a healthy mix of both in the categories list, which is why I've thrown it out there for discussion...
- As for the plural issue... well, ditto. If I've missed a conversation somewhere I apologize, but the evidence in the category list is mixed, with slightly more of them, anecdotally, leaning plural vs. singular. In any event, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate the help in getting this figured out. Aziraphale 20:47, 18 July 2007 (EDT) <- Gray Ajah...
- You really do need to respond to my messages, Aziraphale. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 20:49, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
- *blink* I'm sorry, I don't know of a message that I've missed. I've tried to keep up with every conversation that I've been involved in, but I'll admit that, until a couple days ago when I started my categorization binge, I could count on one hand the number of pages I ever had to watch at once and still have enough left over to make an "O.K." sign AND flip somebody off. :P
- Anyway, any message that I've failed to respond to has been an honest mistake - please direct me to the conversation, or recap it here, and I'll answer promptly (well, I have a homeowner's association meeting in about 45 minutes, but if I see it before then...) - I responded on your talk page! Please stop all activity as it regards categories until we have a chance to discuss. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 21:08, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
- TK, please elaborate on your post at 20:34 EDT above, because I don't follow it. We don't do the opposite of Wikipedia for the sake of doing so, and I specifically said to look at their rationale rather than their policy (the same rationale may or may not apply here). Philip J. Rayment 23:02, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
- Philip, unlike Wikipedia, I will not discuss Administrative matters on talk pages. Use the email if you want a response from me. But I will say, since you keep doing this public posting business, doing the opposite of Wikipedia is in my mind, a good thing. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 23:04, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
- Two problems. First, I was asking you to elaborate on your public post on this page. Second, how on Earth is this an "administrative matter"? Philip J. Rayment 23:08, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
- Nice example, Philip, arguing publicly with another administrator and demanding explanations. I will not participate. I suggest you stop now as well. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 23:13, 18 July 2007 (EDT)
- Personally I opt for lower case names except in the case of proper nouns. BrianCo 12:23, 19 July 2007 (EDT)
- Thanks, Brian, it's a mixed bag so far but hopefully a consensus will develop. Otherwise, I've got my trusty flippin'-coin handy. Aziraphale 14:17, 19 July 2007 (EDT) <-Guildenstern...
- I never post as to policy questions without first checking with Andy, or knowing his position. Not ever. This matter was discussed months ago, all over Andy's talk page, and the Main Page talk. I do believe he posted to make them in Capitals, that he prefers that. I am sure he will post here and let us know if I am wrong. --Sysop-TK /MyTalk 02:05, 20 July 2007 (EDT)
