It is a dishonest way for a male to prevent the pregnancy of a woman.

What the bloody hell are you writing? DLerner 21:05, 10 August 2008 (EDT)

The only honest ways of a pregnancy not happening are if fertilization naturally fails or you abstain from sex altogether. The Biblical story of Onan documented his dishonest and sinful act of engaging in sexual union with his brother's wife but "spilling his seed" to prevent pregnancy. God punished him for that deceptive avoidance of one of the purposes of sexual congress, especially since it was his duty to bear his dead brother's child. Foxtrot 22:28, 10 August 2008 (EDT)

Well, it is a tricky one to write... particually as conservapedia is configured to forbid to use of 'that word.' The one that starts with M. The sin of Onan is not entirely clear though - the traditional catholic intrepretation is as Foxtrot claims, and is part of their justification for their ban on contraception, but most protestant churches do not hold that sex without reproduction is inherently sinful and rather claim that Onan's sin was disobeying a direct command from God. In my defense, I was trying to remain as euphemistic as possible in light of facts. In conclusion, it seems odd that onanism would be treated differently from this related sin, if only because its name is of Biblical origin. (Shouldn't an entry on Onan be enough, with perhaps -ism as a subheading?)CherryS 18:14, 28 October 2008 (EDT)

I think everyone's done a great job today coming to a compromise on the article. I was not aware of the alternative interpretation of the sin as only defying God's Will (in my upbringing that a sinful part of the Onan's actions, but not the only sinful part). It's good to have both interpretations, especially if this varies even within Christian denominations. Also, Cherry made a good edit earlier - onanism does also refer to "self-abuse", and even though it's not a family-friendly topic to go into detail, it should at least be mentioned as a sin. Cherry's choice of words was appropriately inexplicit and matches the level of "exposure" of the rest of the article. I'm reinstating it. -Foxtrot 22:17, 28 October 2008 (EDT)

I've cleaned up this article some. Onan was killed by God (as was his brother Er) - "punished" is too euphemistic. Both "withdrawal" and "coitus interruptus" are mentioned in other Conservapedia articles, and really belong in this article. And this article is the example of Levirate marriage, so I added the link.
