State of north eastern Australia, Queensland was originally established by the British as a penal colony in 1824. It was constituted as a separate colony in 1859 having previously formed part of New South Wales. Queensland was federated with the other states in Australia in 1901.
Major cities include Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns.
The major sport is rugby league.
