Momentum (operator)

In quantum mechanics, the observable quantities are represented not by variables, as in classical mechanics, but by linear hermitian operators. Typically, the canonical substitution for the momentum operator in a one-dimensional position space (or along the x-component of a higher dimensional position space) is given as:
