Lewis (Gaelic: Leodhas), or the Isle of Lewis (Eilan Leodhas), occupies the northern, major part of the largest island of the Western Isles (Na h-Eileanan Siar) of Scotland. Despite its name, it is not an island in itself, but is bounded by Harris. The land is flat and relatively fertile, much being divided into crofts (smallholdings). The main town, Stornoway (Steornabhagh), is also the administrative centre of the Western Isles. The megalithic standing stones at Callanish on Lewis are one of Scotland's major cultural monuments.
