Leipzig with its 509,000 inhabitants is the biggest city in the German Bundesland (state) of Saxony, though Dresden is not much smaller (508,000 inhabitants).

The composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Robert Schumann all worked in Leipzig, and nowadays, the famous Thomanerchor and the Gewandhausorchester are located here.

The university of Leipzig was founded in 1409, thus, it is the third oldest in Germany.
