Doctor Zhivago is a 1956 novel by Russian author Boris Pasternak.
Plot
The novel follows the title character, Yuri Zhivago, a young doctor, during the opening years of the Russian Revolution. He takes part in World War I, is forced into the service of a Red "forest brotherhood" during the Russian Civil War. All the while he is torn between two women and disillusioned by the horrors of war and transformation of his old friends into soldiers and mercenaries.
Nobel prize
For writing Doctor Zhivago, Pasternak won the 1958 Nobel Prize for Literature, which he refused, due to pressure from the Soviet government.
Film adaptation
Doctor Zhivago was adapted for film by David Lean in 1965, with Omar Sharif as the lead.
