The United States Department of Agriculture is an administrative agency in the executive branch of the U.S. Government.
It states its mission as follows:[1]
- "We provide leadership on food, agriculture, natural resources, and related issues based on sound public policy, the best available science, and efficient management."
Despite its mission statement, for fiscal year 2008, 59% of its budget is for food assistance programs, and 19% of its budget is for farm and commodity programs. Less than 6% of its budget is spent on research.
The current Secretary of Agriculture is former Governor, Tom Vilsack.
