Debate: Could Christian denominations exist without the Catholic Church?
From Conservapedia
Could Christian denominations exist without the Catholic Church? If it were not for Jesus's Church, would the other denominations ever exist?
Yes
The Eastern Orthodox Church is doing OK. The Roman Catholic Church split off from the earlier church , so its existence wasn't really necessary. There were bound to be break off sects in time. There is an element of contention about the validity of these as true Christian churches Markr 23:03, 9 December 2008 (EST)
No
No way, the other denominations owe your religion to Catholicism.--jpatt 20:44, 9 December 2008 (EST)
Not as we know them
The Jehovah's Witnesses are an example of a group that has tried to work from 'first principles', without building on the tradition started by the Roman Catholic Church. They differ from other Christian denominations in a lot of ways - in the whole structure of their religious practice - so I think that without Catholicism, Christianity would be very different (though not necessarily like Jehovah's Witnesses).--CPalmer 11:01, 11 December 2008 (EST)
