Gameplay
As a standard turn-based RPG, the games have not seem much in the way of general change since the first title was released on the SNES and Super Famicom systems. Every iteration has a different method for the main character to use a dragon form, and a different protagonist and allies.
Issues of Morality
The games use the Light Dragon clans as a base for the protagonist, while the Dark Dragon Clan is usually used as a main protagonist. The two characters, however, believe that they are doing the right thing in the course of their journeys. The Dark clan, however, will usually partake in massive destruction and as a weapon by the series protagonist.
This is shown mostly in Breath of Fire 3, as Ryu, the main character, is befriended by Teepo, of the Dark Clan. Later on in the game, He meets Teepo again, this time as his worst nemesis, as a follower of the word of 'God'.
Religion
Religion, throughout the series, has posed mostly as a monotheistic religion (much like the Judeo-Christian god) that manifests itself throughout various churches. In Breath of Fire 2, the main antagonist is viewed as a God of his own church, the Church of St. Eva. This church replaces the dragon god churches throughout the game, and through the use of evangelists and charity, soon dominates the world.
In Breath of Fire 3, the main antagonist is known only as 'God' until the final battle, and has hounded and drove the Dragon clan to near extinction using a race of powerful creatures to destroy them. The second half of the journey deals with them heading to the 'Promised Land' (Which is a massive desert with a technologically advanced ruin).
Friendship
Throughout the game, the character befriends allies of various races and different quests, who aid the character to complete his primary goal. the characters, as the game progresses, make bonds with one another and undergo various personality shifts as the games progress.
Overall Impact
The games themselves have not received the acclaim of other notable RPG series, such as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, but they have earned a cult following with a number of dedicated fans to the series. Currently, there have only been 5 games released in the series, each with the Breath of Fire moniker as the title. Only the Fifth installment, for the Playstation 2, has had a subtitle, Dragon Quarter.
